Loria’s POV

The house had settled into that quiet rhythm that only comes after breakfast—dishes soaking in the sink, Anthony building something chaotic with blocks in the living room, Moon chattering endlessly to Audrey on the porch. Simon was somewhere nearby, probably listening to Zyan grumble about territory lines in his head.

But my chest felt tight. My skin… electric.

There was a pull.

Soft. Familiar.

I slipped on a lightweight cardigan, kissed Moon’s curls on my way past, and walked quietly out the side door. No one asked where I was going. They knew me well enough by now. When the woods called, I answered.

The forest trail behind the house was overgrown in places, the path lined with dappled light and the warm scent of pine. My boots crunched softly over leaves as I followed the winding curve, deeper and deeper until the air shifted.

Still.

Hushed.

Like the world was holding its breath.

I stopped.

And then everything dropped away.

The forest around me blurred, light fracturin

Simon’s POVThe hallway was quiet now. Still glowing faintly with magic left behind by our work, but hushed—like the castle was holding its breath.Loria stood beside me, one hand cupped gently around a golden sphere of light. It hovered just above her palm, pulsing softly like a heartbeat.“What is that?” I asked, watching as it floated upward and drifted slowly down the corridor ahead of us.“A locator spell,” she murmured. “Designed to find the Headmaster’s quarters—or, in this case, the quarters meant for whoever’s in charge.”My brows lifted. “You’re assuming it’s not just a bedroom.”She smirked. “Have you seen the rest of this place?”Fair point. The sphere glided steadily, turning corners, drifting past doors until—finally—it stopped. It hovered in front of the very last door at the end of the hall, spinning slightly in place.“This is it,” she said, excitement threading through her voice.I stepped ahead of her and laid my hand on the door. The wood was ancient, reinforced wi

  • What Survived The Burn   Chapter Eighty-Nine

Loria’s POVThe castle shifted around us like it was listening. We walked the halls together—our strange little family—our footsteps echoing softly along the stone corridors of the residential wing. The walls here were older, quieter. Less touched by restoration. Thick velvet curtains hung over arched windows, moth-bitten and dusty. The floor runners were faded but elegant, and everything smelled faintly of wood polish and time.A few of the witches had gone ahead of us earlier. I could hear their voices up ahead—gentle, guiding. Laughter too. They’d found dormitories and were already helping the werewolves settle in. Every now and then, the sound of someone shifting a mattress or enchanting a light fixture echoed down the corridor. It warmed me, knowing people were claiming spaces. Breathing life into stone.Beside me, Simon carried Moon, who had curled up again with her face tucked into his shoulder, thumb in her mouth. Anthony walked between us with Andy and Amy just behind, each o

  • What Survived The Burn   Chapter Eighty-Eight

Loria’s POVThe scent of roasted vegetables, baked bread, and some kind of honey-glazed meat drifted through the air as we entered the grand dining hall—and for the first time all day, my body remembered how hungry I was.It was beautiful in here now. The chandeliers had been polished to a celestial glow, their crystals scattering light across the high stone ceiling like a web of stars. The twin hundred-foot tables stretched out before us, fully set with mismatched plates and silverware. Everyone is sitting in groups.Laughter echoed from one end of the room to the other. Someone had conjured floating candles. Someone else had stacked fruit into towers. It wasn’t just functional—it felt magical. Alive.Amy caught sight of us near the entrance and waved us over, apron smudged, cheeks flushed with kitchen heat and triumph.“There she is,” she said with a grin. “Hope you’re starving.”“Starving might be an understatement,” I replied, sinking onto a bench between Simon and Moon, who promp

  • What Survived The Burn   Chapter Eighty-Seven

Loria’s POVAfter finishing the topmost room of the school tower, we didn’t stop to rest.We should have. I knew that. My legs ached, my hands tingled with magic fatigue, and Moon was still dozing in Simon’s arms—but there was momentum now. A rhythm to the work. And I didn’t want to break it.We made our way back down the spiral staircase, each of us quiet in the way people are when their minds are full. Audrey trailed behind us, muttering under her breath about anchoring more wards near the tower’s base. Simon’s arm brushed mine, warm and steady, his hold on Moon as gentle as if she were made of glass.Once we reached the main corridor again, we veered off into another wing of the castle. The doors here were wide, double-panelled, their carvings faded by time. Simon shouldered the first one open, and we stepped inside what could only have been a classroom for magic theory. The air still buzzed faintly. Magic had been worked here once—heavy, structured magic. There were diagrams etche

  • What Survived The Burn   Chapter Eighty-Six

Loria’s POVWe stood at the base of the school tower—Simon, Audrey, Moon, and me—clustered beneath a curling stone archway weathered by time. The air held a quiet kind of weight to it, like the tower had been holding its breath for years, waiting for us to climb the stairs and wake it up again.A soft breeze drifted down the spiral, stirring the edge of my long hair. Moon’s tiny fingers tightened around mine. She looked up at me with huge eyes full of wonder, her curly dark hair tumbling over her shoulders in soft disarray. Her magic buzzed faintly beneath her skin like static, a baby storm not yet fully born.Simon stood at my side, silent and steady as always. His energy hummed low and familiar, syncing with mine in ways that felt effortless now. Audrey lingered behind Moon, arms crossed, copper hair catching the light that filtered through a cracked stained-glass panel high above us. Her eyes were sharp and calculating—always reading, always planning.Audrey broke the silence first

  • What Survived The Burn   Chapter Eighty-Five

Simon’s POVI leaned against one of the marble pillars near the back of the entrance hall, arms crossed, watching the chaos unfold like a perfectly orchestrated storm.Loria just stepped into the madness like it belonged to her—and maybe it did.Her long, dark hair trailed in waves past her knees, catching the golden light as she moved. It still took me off guard every time I saw it.Zyan hummed thoughtfully. “I miss the curls.”“Yeah,” I agreed. “Me too.”Loria didn’t raise her voice. She didn’t need to. She walked up the grand staircase, stopping on the third step.“Everyone,” she said, calm and certain. “Your attention for a moment.”Conversations ceased instantly. All eyes turned toward her.“Alright. Anyone who can wield magic—move to the right side of the stairs.”Forty-three people shifted to the right, including Moon—our powerful little pup, practically glowing with excitement. Andy stood at the base of the stairs with Amy, and Anthony stood close beside him, clutching his fre
