Chapter 3

Author: Against the Flow
Amy answered affirmatively, "Of course Mazy did!"

Suddenly, my belief in love crumbled, and my love for Mason also began to waver.

Back then, Mom and Dad had gotten into massive debt because their business didn't do well. After dying of overexhaustion, everything belonging to the family had been auctioned off, and the creditors also took away all of our assets.

This necklace of Mom's had also gone missing then.

I had been searching for this necklace for a very long time. I'd also told Mason about it. I told him that if he were to locate it, he had to buy it back for me no matter the price, because that was the only thing I had to remember Mom by.

I had even shown Mason numerous pictures of the necklace so that he would be able to recognize it instantly at all the auctions he went to.

When he married me, he promised that he would help me search for the necklace. But now, Mom's necklace was being worn around Amy's neck, and he was the one who had given it to her.

Had he already forgotten just how important this necklace was to me?

Or did he think that this necklace could be a way for him to keep Amy by his side?

No matter what, I had to get this necklace back. I instinctively reached out to grab it.

However, before I could even touch it, Amy suddenly broke free from the bodyguards and shoved me heavily backward.

I lost my balance and stumbled backward, while she toppled to her side.

Suddenly, someone rushed up from behind me, pushed me aside, and darted to Amy, catching her just before she fell.

Amy was caught firmly in Mason's arms, while I crashed against the bookshelf. Its sharp corners split my forehead, and blood began to flow.

Blood blurred my vision as I stared in disbelief—my own husband was holding Amy tightly in his arms.

He was looking at her gently and asked in an even gentler voice, "Does it hurt? Are you okay? Do you need me to take you to the hospital?"

Mason's kind words snapped the last fragile thread holding me together. My heart clenched as if crushed in his hands, leaving me breathless.

I had been married to Mason for five years. His kindness and concern should have belonged to me alone. Yet when I saw him showing that same concern for another woman, I realized I had never been the only one in his heart.

For five years, Mason had treated me well, fulfilling me in every way except in bed. He knew how to lift me when I was down, protect me as his wife, and deliberately set aside time to keep me company.

But lately, I had begun to see how distant he had grown, and even the kindness and concern he once showed me were fading away.

I felt him beginning to turn away from me, and the reason was painfully clear—he was falling in love with someone else.

Just then, Amy began nuzzling him back and saying in a coquettish tone, "It doesn't hurt. Everything's fine now that you're here."

Then, she wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her face in his chest.

The sight was piercing to my eyes.

He was a married man, and he was supposed to push her away. However, he did nothing of the sort and just allowed her to be intimate with him.

It was one of the bodyguards, Gus Jepson, who thought that it shouldn't be the case and reminded Mason of his identity.

"Mr. Longbright, the person you're hugging is Ms. Becker. Shouldn't you let go of her?"

Mason immediately glared at him.

Gus didn't dare to speak anymore and kept quiet.

I got to my feet and stared at the couple still hugging each other. Then I said in a cold voice, "Mason. Let go of her."

It was only then that Mason turned to look at me with a frustrated, complicated look on his face.

He finally saw the cut on my forehead. Concern immediately showed in his eyes as he let go of Amy and rushed over to me.

He suddenly was at a loss for what to do and just dabbed at my cut with his sleeve. "You're hurt. We need to get the family doctor to patch you up."

I looked at him with reddened eyes. Just as I was about to respond to him, Amy suddenly let out a huge cry.

She held a hand to her stomach and began sobbing loudly.

"Mazy! I think I hurt my stomach falling down… Hurry up and take me to the hospital. I have gastric issues. What if the fall caused me to bleed internally?"

At that, Mason turned to look at her and said in a comforting voice, "Then don't move."

He then looked at me and said nonchalantly, "I'm taking Amy to the hospital. Remember to get Dr. Hunter to take a look at your cut."

Then, he picked Amy up bridal-style and rushed her to the hospital.

I stood there, frozen to my spot, and began to cry uncontrollably.

I never thought that Mason would choose to protect her first and even bring her to the hospital himself before taking care of me.

He kept telling me that he loved me, but his actions told me otherwise.

At that thought, I felt an excruciating pain coursing through my body. My emotions turned bitter, and my heart felt hollow in my chest.

After the family doctor, Corey Hunter, was done patching me up, Mason came back from the hospital with Amy. They went straight to his study, and I didn't know what they were up to inside.

Out of curiosity, I ended up tapping on the live surveillance footage on my phone.

I had installed this camera in his study back when I had still been taking care of Mason so that I could check on his physical health anytime.

I could see what they were doing in the study. In the video, I could see Amy seated, while Mason crouched at her feet, massaging them.

He was very gentle with her, and his eyes were filled with concern.

"You have such beautiful feet. It would have been a shame if you sprained them."

Amy's gaze wavered like she was considering Mason's words.Just as Mason was about to reach me, Amy suddenly jumped back to her senses and pointed the knife at him instead."You were the one who killed my baby! I'm going to kill you too, once I'm done with her!"Mason stopped dead in his tracks, afraid to move forward. "I know. I admit that I was wrong. If you want revenge, then take it out on me. Don't hurt her," he said.Amy laughed when she heard him say that."She doesn't want you anymore, Mason Longbright! Tell me, do you think this is your karma for being heartless?"Mason nodded. "It's my karma."Amy stopped laughing. Her expression then turned stern as she said, "That's not enough! I'm going to make you pay with your life for my unborn baby too!"Then, she pointed at the edge of the building and barked, "Go ahead, jump! I'll let her go if you jump down now!"Mason just glanced at the edge of the building and remained rooted to his spot.Amy began laughing again, sou

My lips curled in mockery."But you can't even get it up for me."Mason shuddered, his face first turning red and then white.I'd struck him where it mattered the most, and he didn't have any way to defend that.I chuckled coldly and raised my voice, saying, "For the past five years, I felt as though I was in a loveless marriage, Mason Longbright. I felt like a widow. I had thought of giving you a chance in the past, but you wasted it."I've suffered too much both emotionally and physically for all these years. The only memories you left me with are painful ones. There's nothing worth remembering at all."I only left because I was thoroughly exhausted with putting up with you."I hope that you will let me go. Ending this marriage is the best and only choice for us now."This is the final time I am meeting you. In other words, I'm also warning you that you are never to look for me again. Go back and sign the divorce papers. Let us go our separate paths instead."I then stood up

The veins on his forehead stood out like they were about to burst. This was the first time I'd ever witnessed him stop himself from lashing out during a manic episode. But a second later, Mason suddenly rushed toward the wall, let out a guttural roar, and slammed his head against it over and over. The corners of my lips curled up in a smirk. I looked at Mason disdainfully and said, "The person who changed was you. I never did. The only thing I ever did was to hide my true self just to accommodate you."Mason frowned, a flash of disappointment appearing in his eyes. "But I prefer the older version of you."I didn't even bother looking at him anymore and said coldly, "Too bad. The old me died a long time ago, ever since you began seeing other women."He was dazed and hung his head in remorse. "It was my fault."I was shocked to see him admitting his fault and apologizing to me so readily. What on earth had happened to him?I knew that he had been searching for me for a long time, but I refused to believe that he would cast his ego aside and lower his head before me, trying to placate me or something.I waved my hand at him in frustration, my voice sharp as I snapped, "Stop getting in my way."Mason looked up at once, looking at me calmly and saying, "Michelle, can't we just
