After spending five years in Virtue School, I was a machine that dutifully carried out every order. Seeing me staying as silent as a grave, my father exclaimed happily, "Jojo's such a good boy now. Come on, let's eat! Let's celebrate!" Hearing the order to eat, I sprang to my feet, grabbed a plate, and stayed on all fours, shoving food into my own mouth with my own hands. My sister Josie shot me a look of disgust. "Mom! Dad! How has he improved?! He's even more annoying now!" On the other hand, the culprit who made me like this—the adopted orphan of my mother's fallen comrade—was suddenly tearing up, his voice cracking. "Sorry, brother… I didn't know you'd hate me for so long. "If you hate me that much, I will go to my mother. I'm more than content after your parents have taken care of me for so long." My brain, essentially lobotomized by shock therapy, couldn't understand such complex sentences. So I only watched as he gritted his teeth and pressed his dinner knife against his own neck. My parents promptly leaped up to stop him, while Josie bellowed at me, "No! If anyone should die, it's Joseph! He's such a jinx, ruining the mood here as soon as he comes back!" It was another complex sentence, but my mind caught the order this time. 'Die. Joseph.' Without hesitation, I scrambled to my feet, dashed toward the open window, and jumped.

Chapter 1

My father Harry was screaming behind me, "Jojo! Stop!!!"

I was already at the window, but a hand caught my ankles with a vice-like grip.

Thud.

My upper body struck the windowsill with a dull sound, and I gritted my teeth to bear with the familiar pain.

After all, anyone at school who complained about pain wasn't allowed to eat.

"Help! Wanda! Josie! Hurry!!!" Harry screamed at the top of his lungs.

My mom Wanda, and my sister Josie eventually came to their senses and rushed over, pulling me away from the window.

I struggled as I fell on the carpet, but I soon stayed down limply as if boneless.

"Have you lost your mind?!" Wanda was shaking with rage as she strode over, glaring downward at me. "Playing suicide as soon as you get back?! So you've learned emotional blackmail now?!"

I couldn't understand her long sentences, only that I'd failed to kill myself as ordered, and here came the punishment.

My whole body trembled at the thought, but I quickly moved and stayed on my knees, keeping my head buried between my arms and not moving an inch.

"Stop, brother. You're hurting me," Will said softly as he hid behind Wanda, his pretty eyes glowing triumphantly. "I was just joking—I'd never let you die. You still hate me, don't you?"

"He hates you?"

Josie rushed up, pointing at me and bellowed, "He has no right! You're being too kind, Will—just look at him, staying on the floor like a groveling dog. Who does he think he's fooling? And the teachers at Virtue School had already told us that their students always play on our emotions like this! Don't get fooled!"

Harry, however, was holding me and sobbing. "Stop, Josie… I think there's something wrong with him…"

"Just stop already! You're being tricked, Dad!" Josie yelled as she dragged him away. "Just look at him—not a single tear, and you call that suicide? He just wants us to feel guilty and chase Will out!"

I was still on my knees, however, my mind was unable to comprehend what was happening before me.

What about my punishment? Would there be any?

Needs a little better on editing. But otherwise a touching story. Almost brought tears to my eyes.
