Chapter 8

作者: Rui Rui
Jason's POV

The Martinez family business started falling apart.

First, our long-time suppliers suddenly cut us off, citing "product quality issues." I sent people to investigate, but they wouldn't even open their doors.

Then the banks pulled our credit. The renewal contracts we'd already agreed on got rejected for "risk control failures." Our cash flow tightened up overnight.

Then the clients started dropping. Major deals got canceled out of nowhere and signed over to our competitors.

  • What the Don's Daughter Wants   Chapter 12

Janet's POVI returned to Italy and officially took over the family business. My father retired. He spent his days tending to the garden and playing with his birds, like any ordinary old man.But every now and then, he'd ask me, "Do you still hate him?"I shook my head. "No.""Hating someone takes too much energy. I don't have that kind of time anymore.""Then do you still think about him?"I laughed. "Dad, what do you think?"He sighed. "I just feel like you've been wound too tight.""Three years. I've barely seen you smile.""And I've never seen you get close to any man."I put down the file I was holding and looked at him. "Dad, I'm fine on my own.""I have a career. Money. Family.""I don't need a man to complicate things."He wanted to say more, but I cut him off. "Is the trip to the US next week all set?""It's ready.""Then I'll go prepare."I got up and walked out of the study. At the door, I heard him murmur under his breath, "That child... if she'd lived, she'd be three years

  • What the Don's Daughter Wants   Chapter 11

Janet's POVThe cemetery was quiet at night.I stood in the shadows of a distant tree, watching Jason sit in front of my headstone. He'd lost a lot of weight. His hair had turned gray. A man under forty, but he looked fifty. He had a bottle in his hand, drinking and talking as he went."Janet, I went to see a therapist today.""He said I'm depressed. Told me to take pills.""I said I don't need them. I just miss you.""I miss your cooking. I miss you nagging me to drink less. I miss you rubbing your belly and telling me the baby was kicking again."He took a swig and started coughing. The coughing fit went on for a long time. When it stopped, his voice was even rougher."But I can't remember anymore.""Your face, your voice. They're getting blurry.""I'm scared that one day I'll forget you completely.""What do I do then..."He slumped over the headstone, shoulders shaking. Crying.I turned to leave. But I kicked a loose stone.Jason's head snapped up. "Who's there?"I froze. He stood

  • What the Don's Daughter Wants   Chapter 10

Janet's POVI sat in the Italian estate, watching the monitors. My father walked in and handed me a file."The Martinez Group's market value is down to three billion.""Debt at five billion.""Bankruptcy liquidation should happen within the next few days."I took the file. "Thank you, Dad."He sat down and let out a heavy sigh."Janet, I'm worried about you. I don't want you getting stuck in this. If anything comes up, anything at all, you tell me. Okay?"I closed the file and gave him a small smile. "Don't worry.""The moment my baby died, I was already out.""Now, I'm just becoming myself again."My father looked at me, his eyes filled with complicated emotions. "Janet, I failed to protect you."I stood up and walked to the window, looking out at the vineyards stretching across the hills."No, Dad. People have to grow up eventually.""Some people just take longer to get there.""Some people only need one betrayal. One death."My father didn't say anything else.He just stood beside m

  • What the Don's Daughter Wants   Chapter 9

Jason's POVThe police investigation dragged on for two weeks. In the end, they closed the case for "insufficient evidence," but the shipment was seized. We lost over ten million. The Martinez family's reputation took a nosedive. Partners started pulling out left and right. The stock price hit the floor. My father had a second stroke. This time, he didn't make it.Right before he died, he grabbed my hand and forced out the words, barely a whisper."Save the Martinez family...""The child... the heir..."Then he was gone. The funeral was small. Barely anyone showed up. Most of them came just to watch the show.Rachel stood by the casket with the baby in her arms, crying her eyes out.I couldn't tell if she was mourning my father or mourning the fact that her safety net was gone.I kept my face blank the whole time. After the funeral ended and the last guest left, I turned to Rachel and said, "Move out."She froze. "What?""Take the child and move out of the Martinez house.""I'll give y

Our cash flow tightened up overnight. Then the clients started dropping. Major deals got canceled out of nowhere and signed over to our competitors. In one month, the Martinez family's market value dropped by thirty percent. My father had a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. I was running back and forth between the company and his bedside, running on fumes.Rachel held the baby and complained. "You're always out. You never spend time with your son.""The company's in trouble. Dad's in the hospital. What do you want me to do?""So what if the company's in trouble? We have money. Enough to last ten lifetimes."I looked at her, and she seemed l

  • What the Don's Daughter Wants   Chapter 7

Janet's POVJason had my body brought back to the Martinez estate. Not to the main house. He placed it in the chapel on the east wing.Rachel and the baby moved into the master bedroom. Nannies and maids swarmed around them. The old man gave his orders."Keep the funeral simple. No need to upset the child.""Just have her cremated on a decent day.""She was still a Martinez wife, so pick a good plot in the cemetery."Jason didn't say a word.He just sat in the chapel, keeping watch over the casket.Three days and three nights. No food. No water.Ashley came to talk him out of it. He threw her out.Rachel came once, holding the baby, her voice all soft and sweet."Jason, you need to grieve and move on.""Janet wouldn't want to see you like this, wherever she is."Jason looked up at her.He stared for a long time. Then he asked, "Do you know what she was thinking when she died?"Rachel blinked. "I was in labor. I don't know.""She was thinking about why her husband wasn't there.""Why ev
