Chapter 1

The moment those words left the speaker, the lively atmosphere around us died instantly. The room fell into a suffocating silence.

Brady Campbell snatched the phone back and hung up immediately. His face had gone deathly pale, the look of a man who had no idea how to explain himself.

Then his phone rang again.

Whoever was calling seemed terrified that something had happened to him and kept dialing without pause.

A chill spread through my entire body as I slowly lifted my head.

"Are you going to answer it yourself, or should I do it for you?"

Sensing the tension, the others hurried to smooth things over.

"This has to be some kind of misunderstanding."

"Come on, everybody knows Brady would do anything for you. Hell, he once took a knife for you."

We had grown up together. Somewhere along the way, we'd become two of the most important people in each other's lives.

When a gang of street thugs was extorting me, he was the one who came to save me. He was stabbed eleven times and came terrifyingly close to being paralyzed. For a while, we weren't even sure he'd wake up again.

When I stood there with tears in my eyes, drowning in guilt, he had simply patted me on the shoulder without a trace of regret.

"You're my best friend. I'll never let anyone hurt you."

The friendship I had once believed was unbreakable, the bond I thought would last until death itself, was now splintering apart before my eyes.

Under everyone's urging, Brady finally answered the call.

But the voice on the other end remained painfully familiar. If anything, it carried a concern she had never once shown me.

"Honey, what happened? Why did you hang up without saying anything? Where are you? I'm coming to get you."

The room went silent. No one tried to defend him anymore.

Sympathetic glances landed on me one after another, heavy enough to make it hard to breathe.

I stumbled out of the private room and bent over against the wall, dry heaving violently.

Then, through my blurred vision, I saw a figure I knew all too well.

Josephine, who had told me she was overseas pursuing her studies, was standing right in front of me. She paused for a moment when she saw me, but her expression barely changed, as though I were nothing more than a stranger.

Brady hurried out after me. He opened his mouth to speak, only to freeze when he saw her standing there.

"When did you get here?" Josephine draped the jacket she'd brought over his shoulders.

The gesture was effortless and natural. It was the kind of familiarity only shared by a couple who had loved each other for years.

"I was worried about you, so I followed your phone's location."

I suddenly laughed. There was nothing in my eyes but mockery.

When I got into that car accident years ago, my phone had automatically sent her my location, too. It told her I was in danger, but she never came.

Instead, she disappeared from my world completely, leaving behind nothing but a hollow promise.

"When I come back from studying abroad, I'll marry you."

And so, through the three years I spent battling depression, she never appeared once.

She only transferred money on schedule, as though money could make up for the empty space she'd left behind.

Only now did I realize the truth. The reason she hadn't been by my side during those three years was that she had been by his.

She disappeared from my life. Yet somehow, she was everywhere in it.

Every year on their anniversary, Brady would leave his son, Owen Campbell, with me for the day. Owen was still young and terrible at keeping secrets. He talked endlessly about his mom and dad.

"Mom is so good to Dad. Whenever Dad says he misses her, she'll fly back overnight just to see him.

"When Dad got sick, Mom stayed beside him the whole time, taking care of him. She even cried when she thought nobody was looking.

"Even when I'm going to school, Mom doesn't want Dad waking up early, so she takes me to kindergarten herself!"

Sometimes, when I looked at Owen's innocent face, I thought I could see traces of Josephine in him.

My throat would tighten as I smiled and told him honestly, "Your dad is lucky. I'm jealous he's always had someone by his side."

Now those words felt unbearably ironic.

The friend who spent his days sitting beside my hospital bed while I fought my way through depression... spent his nights sleeping beside the woman I loved.

Josephine checked into my hotel building. Her room was right next to mine. That night, she couldn't sleep. She paced back and forth outside my door for hours.Eventually, I couldn't take it anymore and stepped outside. The moment she saw me, she dropped to her knees. Tears streamed down her face as she begged for forgiveness."Please. I'm begging you, just give me one more chance. Anything you want, I'll give it to you."Whatever you ask me to do, I'll do it. I just want a chance to make things right. I don't want our eight years together to end like this."I laughed. Then I looked at her with the same indifference she had once shown me."Josephine, it's time for you to grow up. What? Are you saying your world can't exist without me?"Before she could answer, I spoke again, "But my world has to exist without you."She froze. All she could do was watch as I closed the door between us.The next morning, she planned to wait in the hotel lobby until I came downstairs.Instead, t

We stood outside the cafe for a long time, long enough for the sun to disappear below the horizon and for the streetlights to flicker on.Josephine finished her coffee but continued holding the empty cup, unsure where to put it.I pointed toward the trash can nearby. She walked over, threw it away, then came back, like a child who didn't know what she was supposed to do next."You should go home." My voice was quiet. She shook her head. The movement was small, but firm."Not yet."I didn't ask her to leave again. Instead, I took her to a restaurant I visited often. It was a small place that served local comfort food. The owner knew me well. When he saw me walk in with a woman, his eyes immediately lit up. "Gideon, is this your girlfriend?"I shook my head and explained that she was just a friend.Josephine sat across from me, watching me chat happily with the owner. I ordered without hesitation, and my eyes curved into crescents when I smiled. She hadn't seen those expressi

Brady was the one who asked for the divorce.Josephine didn't try to stop him. She simply went to the courthouse and signed the papers. As they parted ways, he spoke quietly, "If you ever find Gideon, tell him I'm sorry. No matter what happens, he'll always be my best friend."Josephine nodded and disappeared into the wind. She found me by accident.A coworker had casually posted a travel photo online. In the background, she recognized my silhouette instantly. So she booked the earliest flight to New Zealand and left that very night.By the time she landed in Auckland, it was already past midnight. She stood alone on the unfamiliar streets, clutching the screenshot she'd saved from that social media post, like it was the last thing keeping her afloat. In the photo, I stood beside a lake with my back to the camera. The wind lifted my hair. I was wearing a blue shirt she'd never seen before.Suddenly, she realized something. After leaving her, I'd started wearing new clothes an

Josephine started having trouble sleeping.Every night, she'd sit alone in the living room, staring at the lamp she'd left on.She tried turning it off once, but when the darkness closed in around her, the memories only became clearer. The image of me curled up in the corner, the cuts running down my arm, the way my face snapped to the side when she slapped me.She unlocked her phone and opened her photo gallery. There were pictures of Brady, Owen, and the three of them together as a family. But after scrolling through her entire phone, she found only three photos of me.One was a candid shot. I was standing in the kitchen making pasta, my hair a mess as I yawned.Another was from when we'd first started dating. I was smiling so hard my eyes had curved into crescents while she held my hand. The last one was from the worst period of my depression.Brady couldn't bear to watch anymore, so he had secretly taken the photo and sent it to her.In the picture, I looked frighteningl

"I'm sorry... Gideon, I'm so sorry..."Trembling, Brady pulled out his phone and dialed my number which was marked as his emergency contact.I always picked up on the first ring. This time, it didn't go through.Helpless, he collapsed onto the floor and called again and again."Please, I'm begging you. Please answer the phone. I was wrong. I was really wrong..."Brady could barely catch his breath. The bedroom door opened. Josephine stepped inside and immediately understood what had happened."Gideon isn't answering?"Brady nodded and grabbed her hand tightly."Tell me, after everything I said to him today, after what I did..."Do you think he's hurting right now? Do you think he'll do something stupid again?"Josephine, we never should have been together."The rest of the sentence dissolved into sobs.A chill ran through Josephine's entire body. Against her will, images of my breakdown flooded back into her mind. She remembered the shattered apartment. She recalled me st

Neither Brady nor Josephine spoke during the drive home.Owen sat by the window, his eyes still red."Mom, I won't let anyone bully you. If anyone tries to hurt you, I'll do what I did today and chase the bad guys away."Something in his words immediately caught Josephine's attention. Her grip on the steering wheel tightened."Today? Owen, did you hit Uncle Gideon today?"He nodded proudly, like a hero who had just defeated a monster. "Not only did I hit him, I threw a cup at him and bit his hand too!"The car screeched to a stop. Brady lurched forward and smacked his head against the seat in front of him."Josephine, what are you doing?"Owen, who taught you this? Who taught you that it's okay to hit people?"The sudden outburst stunned both Owen and Josephine.Owen's shoulders trembled. Tears immediately spilled down his cheeks."I... I just didn't want Mom to cry anymore. I didn't want you and Mom fighting every day."Brady finally snapped back to himself and pulled Owen
