Chapter 1

The system seemed to have developed a human touch.

"The target, of course. Who else would it be? You, my noble host? What am I supposed to do if you die?"

I fell silent. It had a point. How had I never thought of that before?

A bitter laugh escaped me.

For the past five years, I always believed that I would be executed if I failed the mission. That was why I did everything in my power to please Aurora Lowe, swallowing my pride and bending over backward to fulfil her every demand.

I did it all for Mom, who was still lying in a hospital bed, waiting for me. The system promised that once I completed my mission, I could exchange my reward for a chance to cure Mom.

"Finally figured it out, Samuel?"

A hint of schadenfreude, something I didn't know was algorithmically possible, poked through the system's voice.

"That's right. If you fail the mission, Aurora Lowe dies, not you. All those years you spent fawning over here have been in vain."

I closed my eyes. A memory from three years ago conjured in my mind.

It was late at night when three thugs cornered Aurora in an alley. They held knives and slowly closed in on her. I was passing by when I heard her scream.

Without thinking, I rushed in and shielded her with my body. The blade sliced across my back, and blood soaked through my clothes.

As I collapsed to the ground, Aurora wrapped her arms around me and sobbed. "Please don't die, Samuel. I'm begging you. Stay with me. I'll spend the rest of my life treating you right, I swear."

Back then, the system notification sounded in my mind.

"Emotional fluctuation detected in target. Affection Level: 30% increase."

Every day I spent in the hospital, Aurora came to see me. She peeled apples for me, kept me company, and helped me clean myself up. Her Affection Level soared all the way to 99%.

That day, it drizzled outside. She stood at the hospital room door in a white dress, holding a bouquet of roses. Her cheeks were flushed pink.

"Samuel Cooper, once your mom gets better, let's get married. I want to be there with you for the rest of my life."

On the system interface, her Affection Level sat at 99%. I was just 1% away from achieving my mission. I thought it was ending soon.

That was when Joe Bannerman came back to the country. He was Aurora's first love, the man she always called her "best friend".

From that day on, everything changed. Her Affection Level dropped steadily from 99% to 98%, 95%, 90%.

She called less and less often. She always stood me up on our dates with the same old excuse. "Joe needs me."

Now, Aurora's Affection Level had fallen back to 30%. I had had enough.

The rain splashing against my face brought me back to reality.

I stood by the sewer, soaked to the bone, clutching a pearl bracelet. It was Joe's grandmother's keepsake, which he had "accidentally" dropped into the sewer.

He cried and accused me of pushing him, claiming that was how the bracelet had fallen in. When Aurora arrived, she didn't even bother to hear me out before ordering me to retrieve it.

I spent three hours submerged in foul-smelling sewage. My fever climbed to 102 degrees, and my body was shaking.

When I finally found the bracelet, I called Aurora. "I found it. Where are you?"

From the other end of the line came Joe's whiny voice. "Aurora, my ankle hurts so much…"

"Just take a cab home," she replied to me impatiently. "I'm staying at the hospital with Joe."

With that, she hung up.

I stood in the rain, staring at the pearl bracelet caked in mud. Suddenly, it all felt absurd. Aurora's precious first love twisted his ankle, and that was enough for her to stay by his hospital bed.

Meanwhile, I had spent three hours searching a sewer, burning up with a fever so high I almost became delirious, and she didn't even bother to ask if I was okay.

So, I gave up. I told the system exactly that, and that brought us to the conversation we had just had.

"So, Samuel, what are you going to do now?" the system asked.

I stared at the countdown on the system interface. In 30 days, Aurora would die.

I wiped the rain from my face and smiled. "She's going to die soon. Why should I bother trying anymore?"

The system sounded genuinely shocked by my reaction. "Damn, Samuel. That was one hell of a change of heart."

I shook my head and turned to leave.

Just then, Aurora called. "Take Joe shopping tomorrow. And remember to bring an umbrella."

Her tone was so matter-of-fact, like she was ordering a servant around.

I glanced at my phone and gave her a flat response. "Sure."

After hanging up, I told the system, "I told her I would, but I'm not gonna."

It sounded a little worried. "Can you really do that?"

"Does it matter? She's dying anyway."

I looked at the system interface. "Conquest progress: 30%. Countdown: 30 days."

Then I turned and walked away from that rain-soaked alley that sickened me. The rain kept falling, but for the first time in a long while, I felt lighter.

I smiled. "I knew everything."Joe's mouth was agape. He was speechless, trembling all over. "Then, you must've known about—""About how you got close to Aurora for her resources and connections? How you egged her on behind my back, pushing her to target me? How you actually came back to do nothing but bleed her company dry?"His face was devoid of color. "I… That's not—"I cut him off. "Enough. What do you want?"He bit his lip. "I thought I could borrow some money from you… After Aurora died, her estate was liquidated by the company… And the money I'd invested…"I laughed. "The money you'd invested? Wasn't that money she gave you in the first place?"Joe was stumped."Get out."I lowered my head and continued arranging the bookshelves. "And don't show up here again."He stood frozen for a long time before leaving.Nancy came downstairs, carrying two cups of coffee. "Who was that?""Nobody," I said, taking a sip from one of the cups. "Just someone from the past."She look

That was the last time I heard the system. My mind was finally quiet. After five long years, I finally regained some peace.I walked out of the hospital room and down the long hallway. Then I walked out of the hospital's front doors. Nancy stood outside, her shadow stretching long beneath the streetlights. She looked at me. "Is it over?""It's over."She walked up to me and took my hand. "Then… Let's go.""Where to?""Home," she said, her tone soft yet unmistakably certain.I looked at Nancy. The night breeze stirred her hair, and the streetlight cast a gentle glow over her profile.I smiled. "Okay. Home."Three months later, Mom was discharged from the hospital. The doctor said it was the most incredible case he had seen in his 20 years of practice."Every trace of the disease is gone. All her test results are normal. It's nothing short of a medical miracle."Mom sat in her wheelchair as I wheeled her out of the hospital. Sunlight fell across her face, and she smiled, squin

Aurora's condition took a drastic turn for the worse. The system gave me daily updates as usual."Aurora Lowe's remaining lifespan: 12 days… Aurora Lowe's remaining lifespan: 10 days… Aurora Lowe's remaining lifespan: 7 days…"The numbers grew smaller by the day. Meanwhile, my life had never been better.Mom's treatment at Bloomview Hospital was going extremely well. Nancy came by every day with soup and fruit, keeping Mom company and chatting with her.Needless to say, Mom had grown increasingly fond of her. "Nance, how are you still single?"Nancy blushed and sneaked a glance at me. "Oh, Mrs. Cooper, I guess I'm not in a rush."Mom shook her head, smiling. "Still, your best years are ahead. Just consider my Samuel. He's a little slow, sure, but—"I cut her off helplessly. "Mom."Mom laughed, her eyes crinkling with joy. It was the happiest I had seen her since she had been admitted to the hospital.Watching Nancy blush furiously under Mom's teasing filled me with a deep sens

By the time I arrived at Central Hospital, it was already 9:00 pm. Aurora's room was in the VIP ward.I stood outside the door and looked through the glass window. She lay in bed, her face as pale as paper. Her hair was a mess, her eyes sunken, and she had lost a tremendous amount of weight. She looked nothing like the glamorous, powerful businesswoman she was a month ago. "Aurora Lowe's remaining lifespan: 15 days."I opened the door and walked in.Aurora weakly opened her eyes. When she saw me, they lit up. "You came…"Her voice was so hoarse I could barely hear her. I sat down beside her bed without saying a word. She looked at me as tears slowly rolled down her cheeks. "Samuel, am I… dying?"I nodded. "Yeah."Aurora froze. She hadn't expected me to be so direct. "H-How do you know that?""I just do," I said, staring at her. "You have 15 days left."Her face was washed white. "What?""I said, you have 15 days left. That's the price you pay for stopping Mom's treatment."

Another five days passed. Aurora's condition took a turn for the worse. The system gave me daily updates on her situation."Samuel, Aurora's severe headaches are contributing to her lack of rest.""She's been to three different hospitals, but none of them can uncover the reason.""Her company's stock price has plummeted again. The board is calling an emergency meeting."I listened to the updates, expressionless as I peeled an apple.Mom had been transferred to Bloomview Hospital. After starting the new treatment plan, her complexion had regained some color."Samuel," she called out to me weakly. "How has Aurora been lately?"I paused. "Not so well."She sighed. "Is she… sick? I heard from one of the nurses… that her company's stock price has dropped significantly…"I didn't answer. She continued, "Samuel, if something really happens to Aurora, will you—""Mom, just focus on getting better. I'll handle everything else."Mom looked at me, her expression complicated. In the e

The system added after a few seconds, "You've changed, Samuel.""Have I?"I glanced at Mom, still lying in the hospital bed with the faintest breath. Ever since Aurora stopped her treatment, her condition had deteriorated day by day."I just don't want to be anyone's lapdog anymore."That night, Aurora called again.I glanced at my phone and didn't answer it. She blew up my phone again, and by the fourth call, I finally picked up."Samuel…" she muttered weakly. "Can you drop by the hospital? Joe, he… He's injured.""I'm busy," I said calmly.Silence filled the line until Aurora's incredulous voice broke it. "What did you just say?""I said I'm busy."Her voice sharpened. "Joe is in the ICU right now! Can't you just visit him once?"I sneered. "You know who else is in the ICU? My mom. Did you visit her lately?"Aurora was speechless. "T-That's different. I—"I cut her off. "Different how? His life matters, but my mom's doesn't. Is that it?"Her voice audibly trembled. "Sam
