Chapter 2

Autor: Goodtale
The next morning, at 10:00 am, Aurora called.

I glanced at my phone and ignored it. The call ended, only for her to try again. This happened three more times. She was essentially blowing up my phone.

I was in Mom's hospital room, peeling an apple for her. She lay in bed, her face pale, but still managed to smile. "That was Aurora, wasn't it? Go on. Take care of your business. I'll be fine here."

I shook my head. "No rush. She can wait."

By the fifth call, I finally answered.

"Samuel!" she practically screamed into the phone. "What were you doing? Why haven't you been answering my calls? Did you forget you were supposed to take Joe shopping today?"

"I didn't," I replied calmly.

Aurora paused. "Then where the hell are you?"

"At the hospital, keeping my mom company."

"Your mom?" she snapped, her voice even shriller. "Samuel, I told you yesterday to take Joe shopping! You agreed!"

My hand stopped mid-peel. "I did, but I never said I'd go for sure."

A three-second silence settled on the other end. Then came her incredulous voice. "What do you mean by that? You always used to do whatever I asked!"

I laughed. "That was then. I don't feel like going anymore."

"You…"

Aurora was so furious she could barely speak. "What the hell is wrong with you, Samuel? Joe's waiting for you at the mall right now, standing out in the blazing sun! Get your ass over there now!"

I glanced out the window. It was scorching outside—but what did that have to do with me?

"Then let him stand in the sun. I'm busy."

With that, I hung up.

Mom looked worried. "Aurora will get mad if you keep this up."

I handed her the peeled apple. "What do her emotions have to do with me, Mom? Your health is what matters."

She sighed and said nothing more.

The system's voice rang out in my head.

"1% drop in Aurora's Affection Level. Conquest progress: 29%. Countdown: 29 days."

A wave of satisfaction washed over me. Good. Keep it dropping.

About two hours later, the hospital room door flung open.

Aurora stormed in with Joe. Her face was livid. He stood behind her, his face sunburned and red, and his eyes rimmed with tears, looking like he had suffered some terrible injustice.

"Samuel!"

She pointed at me, her voice quivering with rage. "How many times do I have to tell you? Joe waited for you at the mall for three whole hours! Three hours! He collapsed from heatstroke—do you know that?"

I glanced up at Aurora, then lowered my head and continued peeling the apple. "Oh."

That was my response.

She froze, visibly taken aback by my indifference. "That's all you have to say?"

She walked up to me and reached for my collar, but I nudged backward and dodged her hand. "What else do you want me to say? I never asked him to wait. You were the one who told him to."

By then, Aurora was shaking with anger. She sucked in a deep breath, then turned to look at Mom in the bed.

"Mrs. Cooper, have I indulged your son so much that he's become completely out of control? He doesn't even listen to me anymore."

"Aurora, maybe Samuel was just tired…" Mom said weakly.

"Tired?"

Aurora snorted coldly. "And what about Joe? He waited under the blazing sun for three hours and collapsed, while your son sat here leisurely peeling apples! Is this how your son treats my friend?"

Mom's face grew paler. She parted her lips, wanting to say something, but merely sighed in the end.

I looked at Aurora and warned her, "Watch your mouth."

She froze, staring at me as if she had never known me. "What did you just say?"

"I said, watch your mouth," I enunciated. "That's my mom, not someone you can take your anger out on. If you want to yell at someone, yell at me. Leave my mom out of it."

Aurora's face flushed red. The last thing she expected was me talking back to her. After all, I had never spoken to her like that in the past three years.

"Fine. Very well," she said with a bitter smile. "You've got some nerve, Samuel. I'll remember this."

She turned and walked out. Joe followed close behind. Before leaving, he shot me a smug look, as if saying, "You're done for."

The hospital room door slammed shut.

Mom looked at me anxiously. "Don't do this, Samuel. She'll be really upset."

I shook my head. "Don't worry, Mom. She'll get over it in a few days."

Mom didn't understand what I meant, but she didn't press me either.

I sat back in my chair, and the system notification sounded again. "2% drop in Aurora's Affection Level. Conquest progress: 27%. Countdown: 27 days."

I smiled. Great.

A little after 3:00 pm, someone knocked on the door again. This time, it wasn't Aurora. It was Nancy Sawyer.

She carried an insulated food container and a bag of medicine. "Mrs. Cooper, I came to visit you."

Her voice was gentle, and she wore a warm smile.

When Mom saw her, her eyes lit up. "Nance, you're here. Come in. Have a seat."

Nancy set the insulated container on the table and opened the lid. Inside was a pot of chicken and vegetable soup, still steaming. Its rich aroma soon filled the room.

"I made this soup early this morning. Have some while it's still hot."

Mom's eyes grew misty with emotion. "You're such a wonderful lady, Nance. You're always thinking of me."

I smiled. "I knew everything."Joe's mouth was agape. He was speechless, trembling all over. "Then, you must've known about—""About how you got close to Aurora for her resources and connections? How you egged her on behind my back, pushing her to target me? How you actually came back to do nothing but bleed her company dry?"His face was devoid of color. "I… That's not—"I cut him off. "Enough. What do you want?"He bit his lip. "I thought I could borrow some money from you… After Aurora died, her estate was liquidated by the company… And the money I'd invested…"I laughed. "The money you'd invested? Wasn't that money she gave you in the first place?"Joe was stumped."Get out."I lowered my head and continued arranging the bookshelves. "And don't show up here again."He stood frozen for a long time before leaving.Nancy came downstairs, carrying two cups of coffee. "Who was that?""Nobody," I said, taking a sip from one of the cups. "Just someone from the past."She look

That was the last time I heard the system. My mind was finally quiet. After five long years, I finally regained some peace.I walked out of the hospital room and down the long hallway. Then I walked out of the hospital's front doors. Nancy stood outside, her shadow stretching long beneath the streetlights. She looked at me. "Is it over?""It's over."She walked up to me and took my hand. "Then… Let's go.""Where to?""Home," she said, her tone soft yet unmistakably certain.I looked at Nancy. The night breeze stirred her hair, and the streetlight cast a gentle glow over her profile.I smiled. "Okay. Home."Three months later, Mom was discharged from the hospital. The doctor said it was the most incredible case he had seen in his 20 years of practice."Every trace of the disease is gone. All her test results are normal. It's nothing short of a medical miracle."Mom sat in her wheelchair as I wheeled her out of the hospital. Sunlight fell across her face, and she smiled, squin

Aurora's condition took a drastic turn for the worse. The system gave me daily updates as usual."Aurora Lowe's remaining lifespan: 12 days… Aurora Lowe's remaining lifespan: 10 days… Aurora Lowe's remaining lifespan: 7 days…"The numbers grew smaller by the day. Meanwhile, my life had never been better.Mom's treatment at Bloomview Hospital was going extremely well. Nancy came by every day with soup and fruit, keeping Mom company and chatting with her.Needless to say, Mom had grown increasingly fond of her. "Nance, how are you still single?"Nancy blushed and sneaked a glance at me. "Oh, Mrs. Cooper, I guess I'm not in a rush."Mom shook her head, smiling. "Still, your best years are ahead. Just consider my Samuel. He's a little slow, sure, but—"I cut her off helplessly. "Mom."Mom laughed, her eyes crinkling with joy. It was the happiest I had seen her since she had been admitted to the hospital.Watching Nancy blush furiously under Mom's teasing filled me with a deep sens

By the time I arrived at Central Hospital, it was already 9:00 pm. Aurora's room was in the VIP ward.I stood outside the door and looked through the glass window. She lay in bed, her face as pale as paper. Her hair was a mess, her eyes sunken, and she had lost a tremendous amount of weight. She looked nothing like the glamorous, powerful businesswoman she was a month ago. "Aurora Lowe's remaining lifespan: 15 days."I opened the door and walked in.Aurora weakly opened her eyes. When she saw me, they lit up. "You came…"Her voice was so hoarse I could barely hear her. I sat down beside her bed without saying a word. She looked at me as tears slowly rolled down her cheeks. "Samuel, am I… dying?"I nodded. "Yeah."Aurora froze. She hadn't expected me to be so direct. "H-How do you know that?""I just do," I said, staring at her. "You have 15 days left."Her face was washed white. "What?""I said, you have 15 days left. That's the price you pay for stopping Mom's treatment."

Another five days passed. Aurora's condition took a turn for the worse. The system gave me daily updates on her situation."Samuel, Aurora's severe headaches are contributing to her lack of rest.""She's been to three different hospitals, but none of them can uncover the reason.""Her company's stock price has plummeted again. The board is calling an emergency meeting."I listened to the updates, expressionless as I peeled an apple.Mom had been transferred to Bloomview Hospital. After starting the new treatment plan, her complexion had regained some color."Samuel," she called out to me weakly. "How has Aurora been lately?"I paused. "Not so well."She sighed. "Is she… sick? I heard from one of the nurses… that her company's stock price has dropped significantly…"I didn't answer. She continued, "Samuel, if something really happens to Aurora, will you—""Mom, just focus on getting better. I'll handle everything else."Mom looked at me, her expression complicated. In the e

The system added after a few seconds, "You've changed, Samuel.""Have I?"I glanced at Mom, still lying in the hospital bed with the faintest breath. Ever since Aurora stopped her treatment, her condition had deteriorated day by day."I just don't want to be anyone's lapdog anymore."That night, Aurora called again.I glanced at my phone and didn't answer it. She blew up my phone again, and by the fourth call, I finally picked up."Samuel…" she muttered weakly. "Can you drop by the hospital? Joe, he… He's injured.""I'm busy," I said calmly.Silence filled the line until Aurora's incredulous voice broke it. "What did you just say?""I said I'm busy."Her voice sharpened. "Joe is in the ICU right now! Can't you just visit him once?"I sneered. "You know who else is in the ICU? My mom. Did you visit her lately?"Aurora was speechless. "T-That's different. I—"I cut her off. "Different how? His life matters, but my mom's doesn't. Is that it?"Her voice audibly trembled. "Sam
