Chapter 3

Author: Goodtale
Nancy shook her head and smiled. "It's the least I can do, Mrs. Cooper. Your health always comes first."

She turned to me. "You look terrible, Samuel. Did you get caught in the rain yesterday?"

I froze. How did she know?

Nancy took a box of medicine out of her bag. "These are fever reducers. Take them if you develop a fever. And get some rest. Don't push yourself too hard."

Her voice was soft, full of concern, a stark contrast to Aurora's indifference.

My heart warmed a little. "Thanks."

She smiled. "You're welcome."

Nancy stayed a little longer to chat with Mom before getting up to leave. I walked her to the door.

"Nance."

"Yeah?"

"Thank you. Genuinely."

She looked at me, her eyes gentle. "We all want the best for your mom. Just don't wear yourself out. If you ever need help with anything, call me."

I nodded. As I watched her walk away, a thought crossed my mind. It felt so good to be free of the mission.

The system announced, "Conquest progress: 27%. Countdown: 27 days."

I closed the door, feeling lighter than I had in years.

Three days later, Aurora's company held its annual gala.

She texted me, "7:00 pm tonight, ballroom at the Harriott. You're my fiancé, so you must be there. Wear a suit. Don't embarrass me."

After reading it, I told the system, "I'll say yes."

"But you're not planning to show up again, right?" the system asked, having already figured out my usual tricks.

I pondered briefly. "No. I'm going this time."

"What?"

"For the show, of course."

That night, I wore the first suit Aurora had ever bought me three years ago and stood outside the Harriott Hotel.

The ballroom was ablaze with lights. When I walked in, a staff member checked my invitation and politely led me to a seat in the corner—the one farthest away from the head table.

Everyone seated around me was a rank-and-file employee from one department or another.

I glanced toward the head table. Aurora sat right in the middle, surrounded by her business partners and senior executives. Joe sat to her right, his arm linked through hers.

That was my seat last year.

At the previous annual gala, Aurora held my hand as we walked down the red carpet, introducing me to everyone. "This is my fiancé, Samuel Cooper."

This year, I was relegated to a corner. In my old seat sat a "best friend" who hadn't even been back in the country for three months.

I poured myself a glass of wine and took slow sips. The system notification sounded in my head.

"1% drop in Aurora's Affection Level. Conquest progress: 26%. Countdown: 26 days."

Onstage, Aurora delivered her speech, looking every bit the glamorous businesswoman. Down below, Joe applauded her enthusiastically.

Halfway through the gala, Joe got up to fetch a drink. When he passed my table, he stopped. He looked at me, smirking. "This is where you're seated all alone, Samuel? Must be pretty pathetic."

I ignored him and continued drinking. He wasn't ready to let it go. He leaned a little closer and lowered his voice.

"You know what, Samuel? Aurora's been sharing a room with me lately. She says you've been in a terrible mood lately, and she doesn't want to live with you anymore.

"Look, I tried to convince her to give you another chance, but she said there was no need."

I finally met his eyes. "Are you done?"

Joe flinched at my cold stare and froze. Then he picked up the glass of red wine from the table and walked away. I lowered my head and continued drinking.

A few minutes later, a scream rang out from the other side of the ballroom. It came from Joe.

I looked up. A large patch of red wine stain covered the front of his white suit. He looked horrified, still holding the empty wine glass in midair.

Then he looked at me—or rather, in my direction. "Samuel, why would you push me?"

I was sitting in the corner, at least 60 feet away from him. Everyone present had seen that I hadn't moved an inch.

Joe didn't care. His eyes reddened, and he looked absolutely aggrieved.

"You've been glaring at me this whole time! Did you do this on purpose? You spilled wine all over me! This suit cost me 20 thousand dollars!"

The people around us exchanged bewildered looks. Someone whispered, "Wasn't he sitting in the corner? How could he have pushed him?"

That said, most people chose to stay silent because Aurora had arrived. She strode over, saw the wine stain on Joe's suit, and immediately sulked. "What happened?"

Joe threw himself into her arms, crying as if his heart had been broken. "Aurora, Samuel… He's been picking on me this whole time… I was just walking past his table, and he…"

Aurora's gaze shot toward me. I sat in my chair, staring right back at her. She marched up to me and slapped me across the face. The sharp sound echoed through the ballroom.

My head snapped to the side. My cheek burned with pain. The ballroom fell silent. Hundreds of pairs of eyes were fixed on us.

I slowly turned back to face Aurora. "Are you done?"

Aurora gritted her teeth. "Apologize to Joe."

"For what?"

"You spilled wine all over him! What do you think it's for?"

I laughed. "I was sitting 60 feet away from him. How exactly did I spill wine on him? Are you saying I have superpowers?"

She was stumped but quickly recovered by raising her voice. "Stop making excuses! Joe would never lie to me! You've had it out for him from the start, so just admit it!"

I leaned against my chair and looked at her indifferently. "I did nothing wrong. I'm not apologizing."

I smiled. "I knew everything."Joe's mouth was agape. He was speechless, trembling all over. "Then, you must've known about—""About how you got close to Aurora for her resources and connections? How you egged her on behind my back, pushing her to target me? How you actually came back to do nothing but bleed her company dry?"His face was devoid of color. "I… That's not—"I cut him off. "Enough. What do you want?"He bit his lip. "I thought I could borrow some money from you… After Aurora died, her estate was liquidated by the company… And the money I'd invested…"I laughed. "The money you'd invested? Wasn't that money she gave you in the first place?"Joe was stumped."Get out."I lowered my head and continued arranging the bookshelves. "And don't show up here again."He stood frozen for a long time before leaving.Nancy came downstairs, carrying two cups of coffee. "Who was that?""Nobody," I said, taking a sip from one of the cups. "Just someone from the past."She look

That was the last time I heard the system. My mind was finally quiet. After five long years, I finally regained some peace.I walked out of the hospital room and down the long hallway. Then I walked out of the hospital's front doors. Nancy stood outside, her shadow stretching long beneath the streetlights. She looked at me. "Is it over?""It's over."She walked up to me and took my hand. "Then… Let's go.""Where to?""Home," she said, her tone soft yet unmistakably certain.I looked at Nancy. The night breeze stirred her hair, and the streetlight cast a gentle glow over her profile.I smiled. "Okay. Home."Three months later, Mom was discharged from the hospital. The doctor said it was the most incredible case he had seen in his 20 years of practice."Every trace of the disease is gone. All her test results are normal. It's nothing short of a medical miracle."Mom sat in her wheelchair as I wheeled her out of the hospital. Sunlight fell across her face, and she smiled, squin

Aurora's condition took a drastic turn for the worse. The system gave me daily updates as usual."Aurora Lowe's remaining lifespan: 12 days… Aurora Lowe's remaining lifespan: 10 days… Aurora Lowe's remaining lifespan: 7 days…"The numbers grew smaller by the day. Meanwhile, my life had never been better.Mom's treatment at Bloomview Hospital was going extremely well. Nancy came by every day with soup and fruit, keeping Mom company and chatting with her.Needless to say, Mom had grown increasingly fond of her. "Nance, how are you still single?"Nancy blushed and sneaked a glance at me. "Oh, Mrs. Cooper, I guess I'm not in a rush."Mom shook her head, smiling. "Still, your best years are ahead. Just consider my Samuel. He's a little slow, sure, but—"I cut her off helplessly. "Mom."Mom laughed, her eyes crinkling with joy. It was the happiest I had seen her since she had been admitted to the hospital.Watching Nancy blush furiously under Mom's teasing filled me with a deep sens

By the time I arrived at Central Hospital, it was already 9:00 pm. Aurora's room was in the VIP ward.I stood outside the door and looked through the glass window. She lay in bed, her face as pale as paper. Her hair was a mess, her eyes sunken, and she had lost a tremendous amount of weight. She looked nothing like the glamorous, powerful businesswoman she was a month ago. "Aurora Lowe's remaining lifespan: 15 days."I opened the door and walked in.Aurora weakly opened her eyes. When she saw me, they lit up. "You came…"Her voice was so hoarse I could barely hear her. I sat down beside her bed without saying a word. She looked at me as tears slowly rolled down her cheeks. "Samuel, am I… dying?"I nodded. "Yeah."Aurora froze. She hadn't expected me to be so direct. "H-How do you know that?""I just do," I said, staring at her. "You have 15 days left."Her face was washed white. "What?""I said, you have 15 days left. That's the price you pay for stopping Mom's treatment."

Another five days passed. Aurora's condition took a turn for the worse. The system gave me daily updates on her situation."Samuel, Aurora's severe headaches are contributing to her lack of rest.""She's been to three different hospitals, but none of them can uncover the reason.""Her company's stock price has plummeted again. The board is calling an emergency meeting."I listened to the updates, expressionless as I peeled an apple.Mom had been transferred to Bloomview Hospital. After starting the new treatment plan, her complexion had regained some color."Samuel," she called out to me weakly. "How has Aurora been lately?"I paused. "Not so well."She sighed. "Is she… sick? I heard from one of the nurses… that her company's stock price has dropped significantly…"I didn't answer. She continued, "Samuel, if something really happens to Aurora, will you—""Mom, just focus on getting better. I'll handle everything else."Mom looked at me, her expression complicated. In the e

The system added after a few seconds, "You've changed, Samuel.""Have I?"I glanced at Mom, still lying in the hospital bed with the faintest breath. Ever since Aurora stopped her treatment, her condition had deteriorated day by day."I just don't want to be anyone's lapdog anymore."That night, Aurora called again.I glanced at my phone and didn't answer it. She blew up my phone again, and by the fourth call, I finally picked up."Samuel…" she muttered weakly. "Can you drop by the hospital? Joe, he… He's injured.""I'm busy," I said calmly.Silence filled the line until Aurora's incredulous voice broke it. "What did you just say?""I said I'm busy."Her voice sharpened. "Joe is in the ICU right now! Can't you just visit him once?"I sneered. "You know who else is in the ICU? My mom. Did you visit her lately?"Aurora was speechless. "T-That's different. I—"I cut her off. "Different how? His life matters, but my mom's doesn't. Is that it?"Her voice audibly trembled. "Sam
