Chapter 4

Author: Goodtale
Aurora's face flushed red. "You—"

Joe tugged at her sleeve, playing the part of the peacemaker. "Forget it, Aurora… This is all my fault. I shouldn't have walked past his table. It's my fault for upsetting him…"

She wrapped an arm around him and shot me one last vicious glare. "Just you wait, Samuel."

Then she left with him.

The people in the ballroom immediately started whispering.

"Ms. Lowe is way too biased…"

"That guy was sitting all the way in the corner. How could he have pushed him?"

"Forget it. Keep your voice down. He's Ms. Lowe's fiancé. Why stick our noses into their business?"

The young man sitting next to me discreetly slipped me a tissue. "Bro, your cheek's all red. Here, wipe it off."

I took the tissue and smiled. "Thanks."

"Man, you've really got it rough," he muttered.

I wiped my face and stood up. "It's fine. It'll be over soon."

He didn't understand what I meant. He just assumed I was leaving early, which I did.

As I walked out of the hotel, my phone buzzed with a message from Aurora.

"Drop by the office tomorrow and apologize to Joe in person. Otherwise, you're not going to like what happens next."

"Okay," I replied, then locked my phone.

The system announced, "2% drop in Aurora's Affection Level. Conquest progress: 24%. Countdown: 24 days."

I walked down the street as the night breeze swept past me. My cheek was still stinging from the slap.

My phone buzzed again. This time, it was Nancy.

"Hi. Your mom seems to be doing pretty well today. She's been asking about you. Will you have time to visit her tomorrow? I'm making some soup."

I stopped beneath a streetlight and read her message. Then I replied, "I'll be there."

The next day, I didn't go to the office.

At 10:00 am, Aurora called again. I was in the hospital room, helping Mom take her medicine. I let the phone ring five times before answering.

"Samuel!" she roared. "Why do I need to keep repeating myself? I told you to drop by the office and apologize. Where the hell are you?"

I set the medicine on the table. "The hospital."

"I don't care where you are! Get your ass over now!"

I hung up.

Mom and I sat in silence for about 20 minutes. At last, she broke the silence, looking visibly worried. "Samuel, is this really okay? Aurora—"

Before she could finish, the hospital room door was kicked open.

Aurora stormed in with Joe. Her face was livid. He followed close behind, his eyes tinged red, looking as though he had been wronged.

She strode up to me and looked down at me condescendingly. "Don't make me repeat myself, Samuel."

I stood up and met her gaze calmly. "I said I would, but I'm busy now."

Aurora shook with rage.

"Samuel, do you hate me that much?" Joe chimed in meekly. "Maybe we should just let it go, Aurora…"

For absolutely no reason, he started crying.

She put an arm around him and turned to me with a cold sneer. "Since he wants to hate you, I'll make sure he regrets it."

Aurora's gaze shifted to Mom. "Mrs. Cooper, your son is acting up again."

My face fell. "What are you doing?"

She took out her phone and dialed a number in front of me.

"Hello, Dr. Jones? It's me, Aurora. I'm calling regarding the special treatment program for Samuel Cooper's mother… Yeah, I'd like to withdraw my funding."

My heart sank. The experimental medication Mom was receiving was part of a project funded by Aurora's company. She had the absolute authority to pull the funding.

"Are you crazy?" I snapped, lunging forward to snatch her phone.

Aurora stepped back, and Joe quickly stepped forward to protect her. "Samuel, calm down—"

"Shut up!"

I pushed Joe away and glared at Aurora. "You're putting my mom on the line!"

She looked at me coldly. "I know. That's why you'll apologize to Joe now. Then I'll reinstate the funding for her treatment. It's a simple choice, really."

The hospital director awaited Aurora's response on the other end of the line.

I glanced at Mom. She lay in her bed, her face pale, looking at me weakly. "Samuel… Just apologize. I'll be fine. Don't do anything rash because of me."

I closed my eyes. The system's voice sounded in my head.

"Samuel, calm down. Aurora is going to die soon. You can use your system marketplace points to exchange for a chance at your mother's cure."

I opened my eyes. It had a point. Aurora was going to die soon. Why should I give in to her?

I raised my head and looked Aurora straight in the eye, my gaze icy. "I won't."

She was taken aback. "What?"

"I said, I won't apologize to him."

Aurora's face flushed red. "Fine! You asked for this!"

She spoke into the phone. "Dr. Jones, stop all of her special treatments. Yes, right now."

She hung up and sneered at me. "It's not too late to apologize now. I can still call them and resume the treatment."

I looked at Mom. Her eyes were red, and her lips trembled. "Samuel…"

I turned to her. "I'm sorry, Mom, but I can't keep being her doormat anymore."

With that, I walked out of the hospital room without looking back.

"Samuel, stop right there!" Aurora shouted after me. "You're just going to walk away like that?"

I stopped but didn't turn around. "You're dying soon anyway, along with my mom."

My voice was barely audible, and I knew she couldn't hear me.

She caught up with me. "What did you say?"

I ignored her and walked out of the hospital.

"Conquest progress: 0%," the system announced. "Mission failed. Penalty activated."

I smiled. "I knew everything."Joe's mouth was agape. He was speechless, trembling all over. "Then, you must've known about—""About how you got close to Aurora for her resources and connections? How you egged her on behind my back, pushing her to target me? How you actually came back to do nothing but bleed her company dry?"His face was devoid of color. "I… That's not—"I cut him off. "Enough. What do you want?"He bit his lip. "I thought I could borrow some money from you… After Aurora died, her estate was liquidated by the company… And the money I'd invested…"I laughed. "The money you'd invested? Wasn't that money she gave you in the first place?"Joe was stumped."Get out."I lowered my head and continued arranging the bookshelves. "And don't show up here again."He stood frozen for a long time before leaving.Nancy came downstairs, carrying two cups of coffee. "Who was that?""Nobody," I said, taking a sip from one of the cups. "Just someone from the past."She look

That was the last time I heard the system. My mind was finally quiet. After five long years, I finally regained some peace.I walked out of the hospital room and down the long hallway. Then I walked out of the hospital's front doors. Nancy stood outside, her shadow stretching long beneath the streetlights. She looked at me. "Is it over?""It's over."She walked up to me and took my hand. "Then… Let's go.""Where to?""Home," she said, her tone soft yet unmistakably certain.I looked at Nancy. The night breeze stirred her hair, and the streetlight cast a gentle glow over her profile.I smiled. "Okay. Home."Three months later, Mom was discharged from the hospital. The doctor said it was the most incredible case he had seen in his 20 years of practice."Every trace of the disease is gone. All her test results are normal. It's nothing short of a medical miracle."Mom sat in her wheelchair as I wheeled her out of the hospital. Sunlight fell across her face, and she smiled, squin

Aurora's condition took a drastic turn for the worse. The system gave me daily updates as usual."Aurora Lowe's remaining lifespan: 12 days… Aurora Lowe's remaining lifespan: 10 days… Aurora Lowe's remaining lifespan: 7 days…"The numbers grew smaller by the day. Meanwhile, my life had never been better.Mom's treatment at Bloomview Hospital was going extremely well. Nancy came by every day with soup and fruit, keeping Mom company and chatting with her.Needless to say, Mom had grown increasingly fond of her. "Nance, how are you still single?"Nancy blushed and sneaked a glance at me. "Oh, Mrs. Cooper, I guess I'm not in a rush."Mom shook her head, smiling. "Still, your best years are ahead. Just consider my Samuel. He's a little slow, sure, but—"I cut her off helplessly. "Mom."Mom laughed, her eyes crinkling with joy. It was the happiest I had seen her since she had been admitted to the hospital.Watching Nancy blush furiously under Mom's teasing filled me with a deep sens

By the time I arrived at Central Hospital, it was already 9:00 pm. Aurora's room was in the VIP ward.I stood outside the door and looked through the glass window. She lay in bed, her face as pale as paper. Her hair was a mess, her eyes sunken, and she had lost a tremendous amount of weight. She looked nothing like the glamorous, powerful businesswoman she was a month ago. "Aurora Lowe's remaining lifespan: 15 days."I opened the door and walked in.Aurora weakly opened her eyes. When she saw me, they lit up. "You came…"Her voice was so hoarse I could barely hear her. I sat down beside her bed without saying a word. She looked at me as tears slowly rolled down her cheeks. "Samuel, am I… dying?"I nodded. "Yeah."Aurora froze. She hadn't expected me to be so direct. "H-How do you know that?""I just do," I said, staring at her. "You have 15 days left."Her face was washed white. "What?""I said, you have 15 days left. That's the price you pay for stopping Mom's treatment."

Another five days passed. Aurora's condition took a turn for the worse. The system gave me daily updates on her situation."Samuel, Aurora's severe headaches are contributing to her lack of rest.""She's been to three different hospitals, but none of them can uncover the reason.""Her company's stock price has plummeted again. The board is calling an emergency meeting."I listened to the updates, expressionless as I peeled an apple.Mom had been transferred to Bloomview Hospital. After starting the new treatment plan, her complexion had regained some color."Samuel," she called out to me weakly. "How has Aurora been lately?"I paused. "Not so well."She sighed. "Is she… sick? I heard from one of the nurses… that her company's stock price has dropped significantly…"I didn't answer. She continued, "Samuel, if something really happens to Aurora, will you—""Mom, just focus on getting better. I'll handle everything else."Mom looked at me, her expression complicated. In the e

The system added after a few seconds, "You've changed, Samuel.""Have I?"I glanced at Mom, still lying in the hospital bed with the faintest breath. Ever since Aurora stopped her treatment, her condition had deteriorated day by day."I just don't want to be anyone's lapdog anymore."That night, Aurora called again.I glanced at my phone and didn't answer it. She blew up my phone again, and by the fourth call, I finally picked up."Samuel…" she muttered weakly. "Can you drop by the hospital? Joe, he… He's injured.""I'm busy," I said calmly.Silence filled the line until Aurora's incredulous voice broke it. "What did you just say?""I said I'm busy."Her voice sharpened. "Joe is in the ICU right now! Can't you just visit him once?"I sneered. "You know who else is in the ICU? My mom. Did you visit her lately?"Aurora was speechless. "T-That's different. I—"I cut her off. "Different how? His life matters, but my mom's doesn't. Is that it?"Her voice audibly trembled. "Sam
