~ Chapter 40 ~
Jackie took another deep breath and turned as some people came up to the bar. She served them and once she was done, she cleaned up the area. She had to go back in and help Bobby that was her job, she thrived on being busy. And she knew she would be. She also knew that she had to bite her tongue because she was going to see a lot more. And she couldn’t, wouldn’t let Greg and his shit-talking intrude on her thoughts, she refused.
So, with that, she walked back into the main bar, nodding at Buzz as he walked outside. She took to the side and watched as Bobby walked over, his hand resting gently on the small of her back. She smiled to herself at the care she saw in his eyes.
“You okay, Jackie?”“Yeah, I’m good. Just...my own problems.” He frowned, obviously not happy with that response but she couldn’t help it, she couldn’t give him more, not now and not even later because he would think she was crazy and try to convince her she wasn’t.Related chapters

Jackie sat back down in her chair and let out a whoosh of air. Even with her fuck ups with Greg, she wasn’t sure she had been called out. And oddly enough, she didn’t like it. “Any plans this weekend?” Jackie crossed her arms and looked at Greg, lifting a brow. She knew exactly what he was asking but she wasn’t going to give it to him. “Clean my house and work. I’m not like you, Greg; I don’t need to be screwing all the time.” Greg rolled his eyes but he couldn’t come back with anything as the kids came bouncing down the stairs and launched themselves at him. It broke her heart to see how much they loved their dad and yet he made no real effort to be with them. Weekends like this were always so bittersweet for her, she loved that he did take them but it killed her when he brought them back upset. Jackie glanced at Bobby, her hand rubbing his back. They both knew exactly what the call was over, a rather sad fact and one she couldn’t ignore. She turned around and answered the phone while his arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her back to his chest. She couldn’t fight the smile, even as she hit the green icon and brought the phone to her ear. “Yes, Greg?” she mumbled, rubbing her eyes with her free hand. “Are you awake?” “I wasn’t since it was a late night at the bar but your call woke me up. What can I do for you?” “We have a problem.” Those words, how she hated them; she had heard them countless times before. Her smile vanished and she sat up, not meaning to shove the arm away but she couldn’t think when he was holding her. “What do you mean, WE have a problem? We don’t have a problem, however, you do it sounds like?” “Do you have to be that way?” he grumbled and she grinned.

“Are you sure you don’t want to stay?” Jackie asked as she watched him grab his bag once they got back to her place. He didn’t want to leave, but he was more than unsettled and he needed to think. The time with the kids had been great, he did enjoy them, he really did, but Dylan’s comment really left him a little flustered. “Yeah, I don’t want to intrude on your time with them, you know that.” He paused as he looked at her; that was the truth too. Jackie walked out of the office and opened the front door for Justin, smiling at him as he walked in. She returned it, but he was checking something on his phone and she shook her head at him. Knowing him, he was probably checking his grade on some assignment or test. Jackie glanced tapped her nails on the table outside as she watched the road, her stomach turning inside out.
