Chapter 4

Author: Cutie Kitty
All Chloe had to do was mention that she liked something, and Julian would buy it for her without a second thought.

Once, she'd admired a diamond necklace in passing. By the end of the day, he'd bought it for her. It was worth seven figures.

This was the same man who'd always insisted on keeping our relationship strictly professional at the office.

I wasn't supposed to linger in his office or speak to him unless it was about work. Even after ten years of marriage, I was expected to call him "Mr. Winslow" in front of our colleagues.

Chloe, meanwhile, could stroll into his office whenever she pleased and teasingly call him "Jules".

He never corrected her. He even took her out for lunch in the middle of the workday, then disappeared with her to catch an afternoon movie as if he didn't have a company to run.

Lost in thought, I accidentally let the bracelet slip from my fingers.

When I bent down to pick it up, something caught my eye. Part of the gold finish had chipped away. Underneath was a dark, cheap-looking metal.

I stared at it for a long moment before I chuckled.

The one gift I'd treasured all these years was fake.

I'd spent years clinging to a marriage that had never been what I thought it was, refusing to let go long after there was nothing left worth saving.

At least I'd finally seen it for what it was.

I dropped the bracelet into the trash and took every photograph of Julian and me that I'd packed away over the years and cut them to pieces.

Just as I finished, my phone buzzed.

Chloe had posted something new on Instagram.

In the photo, Julian was holding Daisy in his arms while she happily wiped her greasy fingers all over his custom-tailored suit. Instead of getting annoyed, he was looking at her with an indulgent smile.

Chloe sat close beside him, laughing as she held a bite of steak up to his mouth with her own fork. Julian ate it without hesitation.

I stared at the picture, struck by the bitter irony of it all.

Julian had always claimed to be a germaphobe.

Once, when our daughter was still alive, she'd tried to surprise him by making him coffee. She accidentally spilled some on his shoes.

Julian had been furious. He berated her until she cried, then shut her away in the basement for the rest of the day as punishment. She hadn't even been given dinner.

After that day, her health was never quite the same. She became frail and seemed to get sick constantly.

It wasn't only our daughter, either. Once, I'd accidentally taken a sip from Julian's glass instead of my own.

He'd looked at me with open disgust, then dropped the glass straight into the trash. "That's disgusting."

Those words had stayed with me for years.

Now I looked at the picture of Chloe feeding him from her own fork, and everything finally made sense.

Julian had never been disgusted by germs.

He'd been disgusted by us. By his own wife and daughter.

I let out a humorless laugh and tapped the heart beneath Chloe's post.

If anything, the picture only made me more certain that leaving was the right decision.

I finished packing as quickly as I could. By the time I was done, exhaustion had caught up with me, so I took a long, hot shower, climbed into bed, and fell asleep almost immediately.

I hadn't been asleep for long when someone started pounding on the front door.

I didn't need to check to know it was Julian.

He knew the security code. He'd just never liked bothering with it when I was home.

For years, he hadn't even needed to knock. All he had to do was call my name, and no matter what I was doing, I'd hurry downstairs to let him in.

Not tonight. I rolled over, pulled the covers higher, and closed my eyes again.

I was just beginning to drift back to sleep when my bedroom door suddenly flew open.

A second later, the lights came on. I squinted against the brightness to find Julian standing in the doorway, visibly furious.

"Claire, are you deaf?" he snapped. "I know you were awake. Why didn't you come downstairs and let me in?"

The sudden burst of light jolted me awake.

I'd been sleeping so deeply that I genuinely hadn't heard him knocking.

I blinked up at Julian, surprised to find him standing there with a stormy expression.

He actually came home. That was new.

Whenever Julian went out with Chloe, he usually found some excuse to spend the night at her place.

Sometimes Chloe was supposedly afraid of thunderstorms and didn't want to be alone. Other times, Julian claimed it wasn't safe for a young woman to spend the night by herself, so naturally, he had to stay and "make sure she was okay."

There was always a reason.

Our daughter had once begged him to come home because she was afraid of the dark. She'd been five.

Julian had dismissed her fears as childish and insisted that coddling her would only make things worse. He claimed she needed to learn to be brave.

His idea of teaching her courage was to shut her alone in a dark room when I wasn't there to stop him.

After that, she developed a terrible fear of enclosed spaces. For a long time, she would wake from nightmares in the middle of the night, crying and terrified.

Back then, the hypocrisy would have driven me crazy.

Chloe could mention the slightest fear, and Julian would drop everything to stay by her side. But when his own five-year-old daughter needed him, he'd treated her fear like a character flaw.

Once, I would have fought with him over it.

Tonight, I couldn't bring myself to care what Julian did or where he chose to sleep.

"Mm-hmm." I pulled the covers over my head, turned away from him, and went back to sleep.

Sebastian Grant was my boss. He'd taken an interest in my work from the day I joined Meridian Group, and unlike Julian, he'd never been shy about telling me when he thought I'd done something well. But somewhere along the way, his attention stopped being purely professional. When he found out I was moving into a new apartment alone, he showed up and spent half the day helping me carry boxes. When I came down with a fever, he was the first person to notice something was wrong. He brought me medicine, drove me to the hospital, and stayed to make sure I was alright. He brought me meals while I recovered and insisted on driving me to and from work until I was back on my feet.At work, he became the kind of mentor I'd never had. When I did well, he said so. When I made a mistake, he didn't sugarcoat it either. He'd point out where I'd gone wrong, then sit down with me and show me how to fix it.It was only during those six months with Sebastian that I finally understood what it was li

"I'll fire Chloe today," Julian blurted out. "Right now. And from now on, I won't even hire a female assistant."Before I could respond, he pulled out his phone, found Chloe's contact, and blocked her right in front of me. Then he deleted her number for good measure."See? She's gone." He held up his hand as if making a solemn vow. "I promise I'll never speak to her again. Is that enough? Can you forgive me now?"I almost laughed. So, he did know. All those years, Julian had known exactly what bothered me. He'd known exactly how much his relationship with Chloe hurt me.He simply hadn't cared enough to stop.It wasn't that he hadn't realized I would be jealous or upset. He'd just been so certain that I would forgive him no matter what he did that he'd never seen a reason to change. He'd flaunted his closeness with Chloe right in front of me, enjoying her attention while taking my devotion for granted. There had been countless chances for him to draw a line with her. "This piece is called 'Sweetest Thing'," I told the audience. "I designed it for my daughter, Candice, who passed away."Her name always made me think of everything sweet in life. So, wherever she is now, I hope her next life is filled with all the happiness, love, and joy she deserved."And I hope every woman who wears this necklace finds a little of that happiness for herself."The room erupted into applause. As I stepped off the stage, however, I caught sight of someone in the crowd I never expected to see.Julian.He was standing among the guests, applauding with everyone else.I almost didn't recognize him.Six months had changed him completely. His face was gaunt, dark circles shadowed his eyes, and several days' worth of stubble covered his jaw. Even his suit was rumpled, a far cry from the impeccably dressed Julian Winslow I remembered.Apparently, the past six months hadn't been nearly as kind to him as they had been to me.The moment I stepped off the stage, Julian

Julian's frown deepened. For a moment, something unreadable flickered across his face as he stared at me."You're really going to walk out on me?" he demanded. "Fine. Go ahead. The second you're gone, I'll marry Chloe."There was a time when seeing Julian have dinner with Chloe was enough to drive me crazy with jealousy. Now, I felt nothing. No anger. No hurt. Not even disappointment. I simply looked at him and smiled. "I wish you both a very happy marriage."With that, I collected the suitcase I'd left with reception and walked out of the building. I never looked back.Once I moved overseas, everything fell into place surprisingly quickly. I settled into my new job, built a new routine, and threw myself into my career. For the first time in years, my work wasn't about proving myself to Julian or cleaning up someone else's mess. It was mine. And I was good at it.My boss recognized that almost immediately. My designs brought in results, my projects consistently exceeded expe

Our daughter had waited five years. Julian never kept that promise. Not even before she died.I must have gone quiet for too long, because Julian seemed to take my silence as a sign that he'd finally gotten through to me. His expression softened slightly, though his voice remained cold."Well? What are you waiting for? Apologize to Chloe and get that prototype finished as soon as possible. Everyone else shouldn't have to pick up the slack because of you."A bitter laugh escaped me as I shoved him aside. "I don't work for you anymore. Find someone else to clean up your mess. Now move. I have a flight to catch."Julian froze. He caught my wrist before I could walk away. "A flight? Where are you going?"Before I could answer, my phone rang with a call from my new employer."Ms. Aldridge? This is Meridian Group. What time should we expect you today? We'd like to have a car waiting for you at the airport.""Three this afternoon. Thank you." Sometime during the call, I accidentally

Julian froze, frowning in confusion. "What are you talking about…"The client hung up before he could finish.I smiled. "Mr. Winslow, don't tell me you've forgotten the contract you signed. There's an entire clause requiring us to submit the latest prototype by the agreed deadline."Julian's lips pressed into a thin line.Chloe glanced at me from the corner of her eye and immediately seized the opportunity. "Claire, weren't you in charge of the prototype?"I know you're still upset about what happened yesterday, but you can't let your personal feelings interfere with your work. If the company breaches the contract, everyone pays the price. It's not fair to punish the entire team just because you're angry."Her little performance worked like a charm. One by one, my coworkers turned on me, their faces filled with contempt."Come on, Ms. Aldridge. You can't seriously be this selfish. What about the rest of us?""Exactly. If this deal falls through, we're screwed too!"Julian didn
