Jessica's POV

"Miss Wilson, Mr Stone requested you personally."

The words alone were enough to ruin the little peace I had managed to gather since morning.

I looked up from the reservation system in front of me and met Clara's sympathetic stare across the concierge desk.

"Again?" I asked, unable to hide the frustration in my voice.

Clara gave me a helpless look. "The request came directly from management this time," she explained.

Of course it did. I released a slow breath and closed the file

Jessica's POV "Miss Wilson, please have a seat."The moment Mr. Bernard said those words, I knew something was wrong.People didn't usually get summoned into management offices before ten in the morning unless there was a problem. My first thought was that I had made a mistake.Maybe a guest had complained, or there was an issue with a reservation.I also wondered if I had forgotten something important during yesterday's shift.I sat down carefully and waited.Across the desk, Mr. Bernard looked unusually pleased with himself. That only made me more nervous."Am I in trouble?" I asked.Mr.Bernard blinked before laughing."In trouble?"His amusement did nothing to calm me."Then why do I feel like I'm about to be fired?" I asked again."You aren't being fired." He said calmly. I released a breath in relief."Then what's going on?" I enquired calmly.Instead of answering immediately, he slid a cream-colored envelope across the desk. The hotel logo wasn't on it and neither was my name.

  • When I Stopped Running    Chapter 44 - Lunch Isn't A Crime

Jessica's POV "You're staring at that sandwich like it personally offended you."The voice nearly made me choke on my drink.I looked up sharply.Roman stood beside my table holding a paper coffee cup in one hand and an annoyingly relaxed smile on his face.I wasn't surprised to see him since he's the only one bold enough to speak such words.I lowered my drink slowly."What are you doing here?" I questioned, my eyes locked to his."I would have expected some warm welcome, Jessica," He said calmly."It's my lunch break," I muttered, my dissatisfaction was visible for him to see."I can see that," He added.I looked around the small cafe across from the hotel. The place wasn't crowded.A few office workers occupied the corner tables. Two students sat near the window.Nobody seemed interested in us.Unfortunately, that didn't make me feel any better.Roman pointed at the empty chair opposite me."Mind?" He asked innocently."Yes," I replied but he sat down anyway. The man had a remarka

  • When I Stopped Running    Chapter 43 - It Wasn't Charity

Roman's POV "Your candidate performed better than we expected."The statement greeted me the moment I stepped into the conference room.I looked up from the tablet in my hand.Across the table sat three members of the recruitment panel. The oldest among them pushed a file toward me.I didn't sit immediately, Instead, I glanced at the name printed on the folder.Jessica Wilson.A small smile threatened to appear, but I quickly buried it."She's not my candidate," I said. The woman nearest to me laughed."Could've fooled us," she added quietly.I finally sat down. The file remained untouched before me."You're giving me too much credit," I uttered, my eyes scanning the room."No," another man replied. "We're giving you exactly the amount of credit you deserve."I already knew where this conversation was heading. And I didn't like it.The first mistake people made about me was assuming I enjoyed explaining myself.Because I clearly didn't.The second mistake was assuming I spent my time

  • When I Stopped Running    Chapter 42 - On My Own Terms

Jessica's POV I almost didn't go.The email sat open on my phone while I stared at it for what felt like the hundredth time. The address, time, and the instructions were clear. Everything I needed was right there.Yet somehow leaving Rolda's cottage felt harder than it should have.Maybe because opportunities always came with consequences. That was something life had taught me early.I slipped the phone back into my bag and headed for the door."You're doing that thing again."Rolda stood near the kitchen holding a cup of coffee."What thing?" I asked in confusion. "The overthinking thing." Rolda explained. I rolled my eyes at her while she smiled before speaking again. "You've been reading that email since breakfast.""I just want to be sure," I said quietly. "You are sure," Rolda countered. "No, I'm not," I persisted. Rolda pointed toward the door."Then go find out."The response was typical Rolda. She had a talent for making difficult things sound easy.Unfortunately, I w

  • When I Stopped Running    Chapter 41 - The Last Person I Wanted To See

Jessica's POV By the time my shift ended, I was exhausted mentally.Roman had somehow managed to occupy an entire corner of my mind without even being present.Every time I looked at the folder in my locker, questions followed.I couldn't stop wondering why now and how much he knew.I locked the locker and headed toward the employee exit. The hotel was quieter now. Most of the evening guests had already checked in and the lobby no longer carried the frantic energy of earlier.I started walking toward the bus stop. The air felt cooler than usual. It was comfortable and for once, my thoughts weren't focused on Jake. That alone felt like a small victory.I was halfway down the block when I noticed the man.At first, I didn't think much of it.He stood near a newspaper stand scrolling through his phone. It was erfectly normal and I kept walking.A minute later, I glanced back again. He was walking too.I decided to wave off the uneasiness stirring within me. It was actually nothing. The

  • When I Stopped Running    Chapter 40 - The Wrong kind Of Help

Jake's POV The moment I heard Roman's name, I stopped reading. My eyes remained fixed on the report in front of me.I was completely stunned and for several seconds, I couldn't move or speak, my eyes focused on a point and then slowly, I looked up."What did you just say?" I asked sharply, I could feel a lump on my throat. The investigator sitting across from my desk shifted uncomfortably."He arranged it." He added.A dangerous calm settled over me."What exactly did he arrange?" I questioned, holding my breath as I anticipated the worse."The job opportunity." He answered. My jaw tightened instantly, and for a brief moment, I wondered if I had heard wrong. But unfortunately, I hadn't.Roman Stone, had done what I had expected of him.I dropped the report onto my desk. The papers scattered slightly and the investigator wisely stayed silent. My eyes were burning with fury now as spoke."How long?" The question came out low."Several days," He replied. My heart thumped hard at his wo
