Chapter 2

Author: Cocojam
My mother's face went pale, then hard.

"Canceled? Why didn't you say so sooner? Do you think this is some childish game?"

My body trembled with fear. "I thought... I thought Damien would tell you."

"Damien has enough on his plate without you playing these childish games! When are you going to grow up?" my mother shrieked.

I looked at her, tears streaming down my face. "You're right, I can't grow up. No one ever taught me how."

"So the mating is off. It's not the end of the world." My father's voice cut in, low and steady.

He looked at me. "Not going to the Shadowcrest Pack anymore?"

I nodded. "Yeah. Dad, I want to go to one of the neutral packs in another land."

My mother was shaking with rage, but one look from my father silenced her.

"If you want to go, then go," my father said. "It's about time you made a decision for yourself. Good for you."

His voice was steady. "Don't worry. I'll talk to Damien's father about the ceremony."

Just then, an urgent mind-link pierced my thoughts.

It was my mentor, the elder Luna, Isla.

“Elena! We're under attack. Vicious rogues. We can't hold them off much longer! I know you don't like to ask, but... can you ask your Alpha to send warriors? Please?”

I hesitated.

Isla immediately sensed my reluctance, her voice filling with apology.

“I'm sorry, Elena. I'm just so desperate. You told me you don't like using your connection like that. I'm sorry, I'll figure something out.”

I sighed. "Teacher, I'm on my way."

Ten minutes later, I arrived at the territory that Isla lived in.

The battle was worse than I had imagined.

I asked a wounded sentry why the Shadowcrest patrols hadn't noticed anything.

The sentry gasped that Damien's most elite Beta guards had all been reassigned to serve as "sparring partners" for Lilith's pack.

To ensure her first patrol as a new leader went off without a hitch.

Lilith didn't have the authority to command the Beta guard.

I knew it was Damien's doing.

Every warriors in the north was sworn to him.

I hurled myself against our mind-link, only to slam into a wall of ice.

He was blocking me.

I had no choice but to run to the end point of Lilith's patrol route and wait.

After what felt like an eternity, Damien finally appeared.

He was carrying Lilith, who had suffered a "minor injury" in her "battle."

He saw me, and a flicker of shock crossed his face, quickly replaced by concern. "What are you doing here? It's dangerous!"

I ran to him, grabbing his arm. "My mentor Isla's family is being slaughtered—"

Before I could finish, Lilith moaned in his arms, complaining of pain.

Damien gave me a complicated look.

The next second, he shook my hand off and strode toward his command tent.

I stumbled after him, stopping just outside.

I saw him gently lay Lilith on a bed of soft furs before turning his attention to a tactical map on the table.

I burst in. "Damien! My mentor's family is about to be wiped out. It's an emergency. Can you please send someone to check?"

He looked up, a flash of raw pain in his golden eyes. "I heard you. But Lilith's patrol was just ambushed. I can't leave."

He took a deep breath, as if trying to steady himself. "But my mother is waiting for you to prepare for the marking ceremony. Can you go get ready? I'll handle things here as soon as I can."

"But Isla's family..." I pressed. "Can't you just send a squad to check on them?"

Damien sighed, a hint of impatience in his voice.

"Lilith just went through a fight. Her nerves are shot. I'm worried she'll have nightmares. She needs my Alpha presence to calm her."

My heart ached, but I kept pushing. "Then can you spare just one unit?"

Damien shook his head. "They have to stay here to protect Lilith and packmates. I won't allow any mistakes."

My wolf cried bitterly. "Damien! Where is your compassion? Our pack mates are being slaughtered! As the Alpha of the Pack, don't you have a duty to at least investigate?"

He seemed stunned that I would cry.

"Elena, I've told you so many times." He wasn't looking at me, but staring at the map as if it were his only salvation.

"Emotion is a fatal flaw for an Alpha. If I make one exception, the entire order of the Pack will collapse."

His voice was cold, as if he were reciting a code carved into his bones.

"If Isla's family can't defend itself... then they are too weak to survive. That is the law of our world."

My voice went soft, cracking with tears.

I wanted to fall to my knees and beg him, if it would save Isla's family.

"Isla is the only mentor I've ever had... I'm begging you!"

My plea made him flinch.

He snapped his head toward me, his eyes a war of pain and indecision, but mostly the rage of a man cornered.

"Don't do this, Elena." His voice was hoarse. "Don't use this against me... you know I..." He trailed off.

For a heart-stopping second, he hesitated, his gaze flicking toward the tent flap as if to summon a Beta.

He was going to do it.

He was going to help.

But then a weak groan came from within the tent. "Damien... are you there? I'm so scared..."

Damien shot to his feet, instantly forgetting me.

"If their position is that compromised, tell them to relocate," he threw over his shoulder. "Assuming any of them live long enough to try."

He turned and disappeared into the inner part of the tent.

Leaving the camp, I walked out into the biting wind.

I suddenly realized that I might not even be able to save the one person I respected most in the world.

  • When I Wasn't My Alpha Mate's Duty   Chapter 10

Damien's POV“Whatever.”When Elena's cold and distant response came through our mind-link, my world was plunged back into endless darkness. At the pack summit, the sight of Elena with her arm linked with that strange Alpha's had driven me mad. I refused all dinners and locked myself in my room.Like a desperate, caged beast, I numbed myself with alcohol again. I remember drinking a lot… so much that my soul felt like it was leaving my body, floating in an abyss of pain. I think I saw Elena in a drunken dream. She had come back. She had forgiven me. She wrapped me in her gentle scent, just like before, and kissed me with her soft lips…The next morning, my head was splitting from the hangover. When I opened my eyes, the face I saw was not the one I longed for day and night. It was Lilith. She was lying beside me, her clothes in disarray. And on her neck, the fresh, red mating mark—my mating mark—burned my eyes like a fire from hell. In that instant, every string in my mind s

Damien finally went back.It wasn't long before Lilith's call came through."Elena! What the hell did you say to Damien? He came back and retreated deep into the pack's territory. He won't eat or drink, he can't even hold his wolf form! Are you trying to kill him?""If he dies, he dies," I replied. "It has nothing to do with me."I hung up.A little while later, my father called. "Come home for a visit. For the sake of Damien's parents."I booked a flight back to the North. I rushed to the Shadowcrest territory without stopping.Lilith opened the door. Her usual confidence and pride were gone, replaced by a hateful glare."Are you happy now that you've ruined everything? Damien hates me, his family wants nothing to do with me! Elena, I don't get it. What do I have that's so much worse than you?"I didn't say a word. I walked past her, straight to Damien's door."Damien, open the door."The door was instantly yanked open. Damien pulled me into a fierce hug, his grip so tight it felt

His answer was a thousand icicles piercing my heart. The pain made me dizzy. But I kept my voice steady. "Then what makes you think I would ever accept an Alpha who has already marked another she-wolf? Damien, I'll admit you're powerful, but it's not like you're my only option.""Elena, I can explain—""Explain what? That you were drunk? Overcome with lust? Or did you mistake her for me? Damien, none of that changes the fact that you completed the sacred Mating Bite with her. You should know that after what you've done, there's no going back for us. Ever.""Elena, do you have to be like this?""And what is this, exactly?" I challenged. "Did you mate with her only to find out she wasn't what you thought she'd be? Or did you finally get what you wanted, and now you miss the girl who used to follow you around like a shadow?""Elena, don't talk about yourself like that.""Am I wrong?" I suddenly lost control, my voice trembling as I screamed. "Damien, you were born a proud Alpha, and I w

But why did my soul feel so hollow?Whenever I had a moment of peace, my mind would drift back to Damien, to our tangled past. I guess it's not so easy to tear away someone who was branded on your soul. Just thinking about him made my chest tighten in a panic. So, I filled my schedule to the brim. I wanted to be so exhausted that I'd just pass out the moment my head hit the pillow. But after the summit, news about Damien and Lilith always found its way to me."Did you see what that Lady Lilith posted?""She and Damien are inseparable. Their bond is unbreakable.""They have a saying where they're from, 'a match made in heaven.' They're perfect for each other.""Wow, Lilith posted again today. She said she overheard Damien planning a huge surprise for her birthday."My heart pounded in my chest. So this is what it felt like. To say you don't care, but then to hear he's with someone else... it hurt. It hurt so much I could barely breathe. Then one day, Lilith posted a photo online. It

Elena's POVI made it to a neutral pack in a new land, took on a new identity, and started over.Life was quiet until the day I learned the Northern Alliance was sending an important Alpha to a summit. And I, as a newly appointed diplomat, was assigned to host him.My heart stuttered when I saw Damien's name. Was he coming for me?A flicker of hope I couldn't explain sparked within me.I didn't have to wait for the summit. Damien found me before it even started."You gave up everything I had prepared for you... for a backwater pack like this?"I shot back, "No. I just chose a place that was far away from you."Damien suddenly sighed. He stepped forward, his powerful Alpha scent wrapping around me. "I've finally found you. You're coming home with me."I pushed him away. "I have a good life here. Why would I go back with you?""What can you possibly learn and enjoy here?" he said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "Come back, and I'll train you myself.""Damien, we're d

  • When I Wasn't My Alpha Mate's Duty   Chapter 5

Damien's POV"Go."When Elena said that one word, my world fell apart. It wasn't a violent explosion. It was a silent, complete collapse. The light in her eyes died. The galaxy that had once shone only for me became a dead, frozen lake.I promised my brother...The thought coiled around my soul like a venomous snake, strangling me, squeezing the air from my lungs.I turned, my body moving on its own, every step like walking on blades. I wanted to turn back, to tell her to stay, to not go. But Lilith's frantic mind-link was still screaming in my head, and the image of my brother's pleading eyes as he died was burned into my mind.Duty.Promise.An Alpha's oath. The things that once made me proud now felt like heavy chains, nailing me to the spot."Wait for me... Elena. Just wait for me to sort this all out."I heard my own broken voice."The Luna's suite at the pack house is ready for you. You can move in anytime."After I said it, I practically fled. I didn't dare look at her again.
