Chapter 3

Author: Cocojam
I wandered aimlessly through the snow.

After who knows how long, I found myself in a familiar birch forest.

I was once an Omega with a weak bloodline, bullied in my home pack.

When I was twelve, my pack clashed with the Shadowcrest Pack.

In the chaos, several adult wolves cornered me, tearing at my fur.

Then Damien came through them like a storm, a god of fury in the chaos, his howl scattering our attackers.

He drove off the brutes and wrapped me in his Alpha scent.

And discovered, to his shock, that I, a weak little Omega, was his fated mate.

He brought me back to the Shadowcrest Pack.

He trained me himself, unlocked my potential, and helped me earn everyone's respect.

"Then make yourself stronger," he once told me. "No one can reject a strong mate."

Our bond deepened with every passing day.

Until the news of his brother's death arrived.

Leaving behind his grieving mate, Lilith.

Damien promised he would always protect Lilith and the pack she inherited.

From then on, Lilith constantly used "territory security" and "his brother's dying wish" to come between us.

She would appear while Damien was training me, crying about her pack's troubles.

She would send an urgent message while we were alone, saying her mate's favorite war hound had run off—the only creature he'd left her.

And she always did it with such fragile helplessness that I never even had the right to be angry.

I once asked him cautiously, "Can't you... stop putting her first all the time? I'm your mate."

But Damien just said, "Don't be jealous of her. She was my brother's fated mate. Before he died, he made me promise to take care of her."

Later, we fought about it.

One time, I finally broke.

The tears I had held back for so long finally fell.

I looked at Lilith, my voice trembling from the effort of holding myself together.

“If you know it affects our bond, why do you keep running to Damien with every little problem? He is not your Alpha.”

My voice was a whisper, yet every word was laced with pain. “Or is it… that you desire your own mate's brother?”

Damien's face went white.

He looked from my enraged face to Lilith's tear-streaked one, his eyes filled with panic.

He chose the fastest, most hurtful way to end the chaos.

He unleashed his Alpha command on me.

"Elena! Shut up! Go apologize to Lilith!"

I stared at him, unable to believe he could be so blind.

"No!"

"Then have it your way. Go cool off by yourself."

He really did it.

He severed our mind-link.

For a whole month.

He left me alone to suffer through the tearing agony night after night.

In the end, it was me who broke.

I went to him and begged him to reconnect.

Again and again.

My tolerance convinced him that no matter what, the fated bond could never be broken, and I would never leave him.

Until just before the Luna ceremony.

I was so exhausted from overtraining I could barely hold my human form.

I pleaded with him. "Damien, I feel so sick. Your Alpha energy..."

Before I could finish, I felt Lilith's frantic voice in his mind.

"Damien, this territory dispute is a nightmare. You have to help me solve it today. I forbid you from leaving!"

Damien's response was fond. "Alright."

Then, he cut his link with me.

I struggled to reconnect, but he rejected the attempt.

I had no choice but to call my teacher, Isla, for help.

Then I passed out.

When I woke up from the coma the next day, I dragged my weak body to Damien's tent.

I heard Lilith's voice from inside. "Damien, you're awake? You should go check on your little mate. She's probably throwing a fit since you rejected her link yesterday."

Damien: "Forget it."

Lilith, coaxing: "Please? Go soothe her, or she'll blame me for ruining your relationship again."

Damien, annoyed: "Let her."

"You're really not going?"

"No."

"What if she threatens to reject the bond again?"

There was a long pause, then a soft, cold exhale of breath.

"Then let her try."

In that moment, something inside me shattered for good.

  • When I Wasn't My Alpha Mate's Duty   Chapter 10

Damien's POV“Whatever.”When Elena's cold and distant response came through our mind-link, my world was plunged back into endless darkness. At the pack summit, the sight of Elena with her arm linked with that strange Alpha's had driven me mad. I refused all dinners and locked myself in my room.Like a desperate, caged beast, I numbed myself with alcohol again. I remember drinking a lot… so much that my soul felt like it was leaving my body, floating in an abyss of pain. I think I saw Elena in a drunken dream. She had come back. She had forgiven me. She wrapped me in her gentle scent, just like before, and kissed me with her soft lips…The next morning, my head was splitting from the hangover. When I opened my eyes, the face I saw was not the one I longed for day and night. It was Lilith. She was lying beside me, her clothes in disarray. And on her neck, the fresh, red mating mark—my mating mark—burned my eyes like a fire from hell. In that instant, every string in my mind s

Damien finally went back.It wasn't long before Lilith's call came through."Elena! What the hell did you say to Damien? He came back and retreated deep into the pack's territory. He won't eat or drink, he can't even hold his wolf form! Are you trying to kill him?""If he dies, he dies," I replied. "It has nothing to do with me."I hung up.A little while later, my father called. "Come home for a visit. For the sake of Damien's parents."I booked a flight back to the North. I rushed to the Shadowcrest territory without stopping.Lilith opened the door. Her usual confidence and pride were gone, replaced by a hateful glare."Are you happy now that you've ruined everything? Damien hates me, his family wants nothing to do with me! Elena, I don't get it. What do I have that's so much worse than you?"I didn't say a word. I walked past her, straight to Damien's door."Damien, open the door."The door was instantly yanked open. Damien pulled me into a fierce hug, his grip so tight it felt

His answer was a thousand icicles piercing my heart. The pain made me dizzy. But I kept my voice steady. "Then what makes you think I would ever accept an Alpha who has already marked another she-wolf? Damien, I'll admit you're powerful, but it's not like you're my only option.""Elena, I can explain—""Explain what? That you were drunk? Overcome with lust? Or did you mistake her for me? Damien, none of that changes the fact that you completed the sacred Mating Bite with her. You should know that after what you've done, there's no going back for us. Ever.""Elena, do you have to be like this?""And what is this, exactly?" I challenged. "Did you mate with her only to find out she wasn't what you thought she'd be? Or did you finally get what you wanted, and now you miss the girl who used to follow you around like a shadow?""Elena, don't talk about yourself like that.""Am I wrong?" I suddenly lost control, my voice trembling as I screamed. "Damien, you were born a proud Alpha, and I w

But why did my soul feel so hollow?Whenever I had a moment of peace, my mind would drift back to Damien, to our tangled past. I guess it's not so easy to tear away someone who was branded on your soul. Just thinking about him made my chest tighten in a panic. So, I filled my schedule to the brim. I wanted to be so exhausted that I'd just pass out the moment my head hit the pillow. But after the summit, news about Damien and Lilith always found its way to me."Did you see what that Lady Lilith posted?""She and Damien are inseparable. Their bond is unbreakable.""They have a saying where they're from, 'a match made in heaven.' They're perfect for each other.""Wow, Lilith posted again today. She said she overheard Damien planning a huge surprise for her birthday."My heart pounded in my chest. So this is what it felt like. To say you don't care, but then to hear he's with someone else... it hurt. It hurt so much I could barely breathe. Then one day, Lilith posted a photo online. It

Elena's POVI made it to a neutral pack in a new land, took on a new identity, and started over.Life was quiet until the day I learned the Northern Alliance was sending an important Alpha to a summit. And I, as a newly appointed diplomat, was assigned to host him.My heart stuttered when I saw Damien's name. Was he coming for me?A flicker of hope I couldn't explain sparked within me.I didn't have to wait for the summit. Damien found me before it even started."You gave up everything I had prepared for you... for a backwater pack like this?"I shot back, "No. I just chose a place that was far away from you."Damien suddenly sighed. He stepped forward, his powerful Alpha scent wrapping around me. "I've finally found you. You're coming home with me."I pushed him away. "I have a good life here. Why would I go back with you?""What can you possibly learn and enjoy here?" he said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "Come back, and I'll train you myself.""Damien, we're d

  • When I Wasn't My Alpha Mate's Duty   Chapter 5

Damien's POV"Go."When Elena said that one word, my world fell apart. It wasn't a violent explosion. It was a silent, complete collapse. The light in her eyes died. The galaxy that had once shone only for me became a dead, frozen lake.I promised my brother...The thought coiled around my soul like a venomous snake, strangling me, squeezing the air from my lungs.I turned, my body moving on its own, every step like walking on blades. I wanted to turn back, to tell her to stay, to not go. But Lilith's frantic mind-link was still screaming in my head, and the image of my brother's pleading eyes as he died was burned into my mind.Duty.Promise.An Alpha's oath. The things that once made me proud now felt like heavy chains, nailing me to the spot."Wait for me... Elena. Just wait for me to sort this all out."I heard my own broken voice."The Luna's suite at the pack house is ready for you. You can move in anytime."After I said it, I practically fled. I didn't dare look at her again.
