My mother's face went pale, then hard."Canceled? Why didn't you say so sooner? Do you think this is some childish game?"My body trembled with fear. "I thought... I thought Damien would tell you.""Damien has enough on his plate without you playing these childish games! When are you going to grow up?" my mother shrieked.I looked at her, tears streaming down my face. "You're right, I can't grow up. No one ever taught me how.""So the mating is off. It's not the end of the world." My father's voice cut in, low and steady. He looked at me. "Not going to the Shadowcrest Pack anymore?"I nodded. "Yeah. Dad, I want to go to one of the neutral packs in another land."My mother was shaking with rage, but one look from my father silenced her."If you want to go, then go," my father said. "It's about time you made a decision for yourself. Good for you." His voice was steady. "Don't worry. I'll talk to Damien's father about the ceremony."Just then, an urgent mind-link pierced my thoughts. I

Before I was set to leave, Damien's mother invited me to the full moon dinner. Her voice was gentle. "Elena, even if you don't become our pack's Luna, does that mean we have to be enemies?"I couldn't refuse her.So I went.Damien opened the door. He looked at me, his golden eyes churning with unspoken emotions.Facing him, my wolf still lost control. That desperate longing for a fated mate.I looked down. "Excuse me," I whispered.Damien didn't move. I had to squeeze past him.Lilith immediately came forward, playing the part of the hostess. "Elena's here! You came! You didn't have to bring a gift."I ignored her, sidestepping the hand she reached out.Lilith immediately shot a hurt look at Damien. "See, Damien? She's still mad."Before Damien could speak, I turned, my voice dripping ice. "I'm not mad. This is a gift for an Elder, not a... guest."Lilith let out a cold laugh. "Says she's not mad, but now she's calling me a guest. Damien, your little mate has claws."Damien's face

Elena's POVI made it to a neutral pack in a new land, took on a new identity, and started over.Life was quiet until the day I learned the Northern Alliance was sending an important Alpha to a summit. And I, as a newly appointed diplomat, was assigned to host him.My heart stuttered when I saw Damien's name. Was he coming for me?A flicker of hope I couldn't explain sparked within me.I didn't have to wait for the summit. Damien found me before it even started."You gave up everything I had prepared for you... for a backwater pack like this?"I shot back, "No. I just chose a place that was far away from you."Damien suddenly sighed. He stepped forward, his powerful Alpha scent wrapping around me. "I've finally found you. You're coming home with me."I pushed him away. "I have a good life here. Why would I go back with you?""What can you possibly learn and enjoy here?" he said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "Come back, and I'll train you myself.""Damien, we're d

His answer was a thousand icicles piercing my heart. The pain made me dizzy. But I kept my voice steady. "Then what makes you think I would ever accept an Alpha who has already marked another she-wolf? Damien, I'll admit you're powerful, but it's not like you're my only option.""Elena, I can explain—""Explain what? That you were drunk? Overcome with lust? Or did you mistake her for me? Damien, none of that changes the fact that you completed the sacred Mating Bite with her. You should know that after what you've done, there's no going back for us. Ever.""Elena, do you have to be like this?""And what is this, exactly?" I challenged. "Did you mate with her only to find out she wasn't what you thought she'd be? Or did you finally get what you wanted, and now you miss the girl who used to follow you around like a shadow?""Elena, don't talk about yourself like that.""Am I wrong?" I suddenly lost control, my voice trembling as I screamed. "Damien, you were born a proud Alpha, and I w

Damien's POV“Whatever.”When Elena's cold and distant response came through our mind-link, my world was plunged back into endless darkness. At the pack summit, the sight of Elena with her arm linked with that strange Alpha's had driven me mad. I refused all dinners and locked myself in my room.Like a desperate, caged beast, I numbed myself with alcohol again. I remember drinking a lot… so much that my soul felt like it was leaving my body, floating in an abyss of pain. I think I saw Elena in a drunken dream. She had come back. She had forgiven me. She wrapped me in her gentle scent, just like before, and kissed me with her soft lips…The next morning, my head was splitting from the hangover. When I opened my eyes, the face I saw was not the one I longed for day and night. It was Lilith. She was lying beside me, her clothes in disarray. And on her neck, the fresh, red mating mark—my mating mark—burned my eyes like a fire from hell. In that instant, every string in my mind s
