Beatrice's pov

I looked at Martin, standing between me and Cedrick with his feet planted and his shoulders squared, and I thought about Callum.

My brother in his cell. My brother whose execution order had been withdrawn only because I had promised not to cross Cedrick again. My brother whose life hung on the thin, fraying thread of a king's patience, and that king was standing in the doorway with gold burning in his eyes and the word "choose" still ringing off the walls.

There was no choice. Th

Beatrice's povSeeing that it was out of his hands, the gamma muttered his thanks to Martin before disappearing down the corridor. The air still smelled like Neah's perfume and the sharp, bitter scent of her mother's anger, and my wolf was still pacing restlessly inside me, processing the aftermath of a fight that had ended before it truly began.Martin watched the Gamma go, then turned back to me."Your problems are my problems," he said. "I thought I'd made that clear by now.""You've made a lot of things clear," I said. "I'm just not sure I believe all of them yet."He smiled at that, "Fair enough. But I need a favor.""A favor." I stared at him. "You just saved me from the dungeon and now you're calling in a debt?""No, not a debt. A request." He leaned against the wall, giving me space the way he always did. "There's a banquet tonight. The annual Alpha Ball. Every pack leader in the region will be there, along with half the court and most of the nobility. I need a guest on my arm

  • When I’m Gone, You Love   Chapter 85 – The Frame

Beatrice's povI didn't move from where I stood.Neah and her mother blocked the doorway, and behind them the corridor was empty, and inside the records room there was nowhere to go except through them. My wolf pressed forward, low and watchful, reading the threat in their posture, in the rehearsed fury on Neah's face, in the careful smile on her mother's mouth that said this had been planned down to the last detail."You're not searching me," I said. "You have no evidence and no authority.""No authority?" Neah's mother laughed, a high, brittle sound. "My daughter is the king's intended. That gives us more authority over a slave than you seem to understand.""Intended doesn't mean married," I said. "And until there's a crown on her head, she has no more right to touch me than any other woman in this palace."Neah's eyes narrowed. She turned to the corridor and raised her voice. "Gamma."Footsteps approached, heavy and measured, and a man appeared behind them. He was broad and militar

There had never been a choice."Martin," I said. "Thank you. For everything but I don't need you to walk me anywhere."Martin looked at me, and I could see the protest forming behind his eyes, the argument he wanted to make, the hand he wanted to extend. His wolf pressed forward, protective and warm, and for a second I almost changed my mind because the warmth was real and I was so tired of being cold."Beatrice," he said quietly. "You don't have to do this.""Yes I do."I stepped around him and w

  • When I’m Gone, You Love   Chapter 83 – Choose

Beatrice's povI paused at the word and my eyes widened slightly. The physician's hands were still. He stood beside the cot with his notes in his hand and waited for me to speak, and I could see Judy hovering near the door, her face tight with something she was trying very hard not to show."You can't tell anyone," I said. The physician blinked. "My lady, the king will need to be informed. This is a matter of...""You can't tell anyone." I sat up on the cot and looked him in the eye, and whatever he saw in my face made him stop talking. "Not a single person in this palace. If word of this gets out, I need you to understand what that means for me. Do you understand?"The physician exhaled through his nose, a long, careful breath that carried the weight of a man who knew he was being asked to do something that could cost him his position or worse."I am bound by my oath to the crown," he said quietly."And I am asking you, as a woman carrying a child she did not choose to conceive, to

  • When I’m Gone, You Love   Chapter 82 – Diagnosis

Beatrice's povI went back to work because staying in bed felt too much like surrender. The fever had broken three days ago, but my body hadn't caught up. Everything felt slightly off, as though someone had shifted the world two inches to the left while I was sleeping and now nothing quite lined up the way it used to. My hands were steady enough to write, my legs carried me where I needed to go, but the exhaustion sat deep in my bones like something that sleep couldn't reach. The worst part was the nausea. It started in the mornings, a low, rolling sickness that rose from my stomach and settled in the back of my throat before I'd even opened my eyes. I learned to lie still for a few minutes after waking, breathing slowly through my nose until the worst of it passed, and then I'd get up and dress and pretend it wasn't happening. By midday it usually eased, but the smell of certain foods brought it roaring back without warning. Roasted meat, which I'd once loved, now turned my stomach s

  • When I’m Gone, You Love   Chapter 81 – Fever

Beatrice's povCedrick dragged me through the villa's front doors like luggage, his hand locked around my arm hard enough to leave bruises I'd be wearing for days. The moment we were inside, he released me and I stumbled forward, catching myself against the wall.My mouth still tasted like his blood. He stood in the entrance hall with his bitten wrist held against his side, blood soaking through his sleeve, and looked at me the way he always looked at me, as though I were a problem he was running out of patience to solve. His wolf was close to the surface, gold rimming his irises, and the dominance rolling off him made the air feel thick and heavy. My own wolf pressed against my ribs but didn't cower. She was too angry for that."Martin was gentler than you," I said. His jaw clenched and his nostrils flared, and for a second I could smell the change in him, a sharp spike in his scent that my wolf recognized instantly. Jealousy. Raw and territorial and so obvious it was almost embarra
