Lydia’s pov

I'd thought I could slip away quietly or disappear into the unclaimed territories where no one knew my name, where I could start over and pretend the last three years had never happened.

I was wrong.

"There she is!" Someone screeched, "That's the mistress! The one who killed Elena!"

They descended on me like a pack of rabid wolves.

Hands grabbed my hair, my clothes, my arms. Someone ripped my suitcase from my grip and threw it open, scattering my belongings across the dirty floor. I

Author‘s POVTen Years LaterElena moved through her forms with a fluid grace. Her body was strong now, muscled and lean from all her training. "Keep your guard up!" she called to the young couple sparring before her. "Mira, stop making eyes at your mate and focus. He's not going to go easy on you just because you're pretty."Mira laughed, ducking under her partner's swing. "He'd better not. I'd lose all respect for him."Her mate grinned and pressed his attack. They continued like that as Elena showered praises on them."Elena."Elena turned to find her father approaching with two cups in his hands. His hair had gone fully silver in the years since she'd awakened, but his eyes were still warm. Still full of the quiet joy that had defined their relationship for as long as she could remember.Which, admittedly, wasn't very long at all."Taking a break?" He handed her one of the cups, chilled tea, sweetened with honey the way she liked it."Just for a moment." She took a long drink, s

  • When I’m Gone, You Love   Chapter 34: The last thing I do.

BlakeJacob stopped the car at the edge of a clearing where a stone building emerged from the forest like something grown rather than built looked like it had been standing there for a thousand years."This is as far as I go." Jacob's voice was flat. "The witches don't like wolves on their territory. You'll have to walk from here."I climbed out of the car without arguing. The path to the building was marked by pale stones that glowed faintly in the dim forest light. I followed them with unsteady steps, my body still weak from the hospital, my heart pounding with something that might have been hope or terror.A woman met me at the entrance. She was young or appeared young, with the ageless quality that marked all practitioners of the old magic. Her eyes were silver, reflecting the light like mirrors, and when she spoke, her voice carried an echo that seemed to come from somewhere far away."You are Blake." Not a question. "The mate.""Yes. I need to see the head witch. I need to see E

  • When I’m Gone, You Love   Chapter 33: Take me to her

Blake’s povMy Beta stood in the doorway, his face grave."It's confirmed, sir." He informed me, "Elena completed the Soul-Severing Ritual three days ago. The witches have verified it."I stared at him without comprehension."The ritual cannot be reversed," he continued. The word didn't make sense. I just kept staring at him or into thin air."Sir?" He stepped closer. "Is there anything I can—""Leave me.""Sir—""I said leave."He retreated without another word, closing the door softly behind him.I stood alone in our bedroom. What did she feel? I wondered. When she walked into that chamber? When she let them destroy her wolf, her memories, everything that made her who she was?Did she feel relief? Peace? Did she close her eyes and think of happier times, or did she walk into the darkness with nothing but pain in her heart?Did she think of me?I reached for the bottle on the nightstand.I drank straight from the bottle, letting the burn fill the hollow space in my chest where the m

I tried to run, but there were too many of them screaming the same words."Whore!""Murderer!""You deserve to die!"A fist connected with my jaw. I hit the ground hard. Kicks rained down on my ribs, my back, my stomach. I curled into a ball, trying to protect myself, but they kept coming."She stole Elena's mate!""She bought the heart that could have saved her!""Monster! She's a monster!"I don't know how long it lasted. An eternity of pain and hatred and the crushing weight of a world that ha

Blake‘s POVElena had entered the ritual chamber.Sarah opened her door with hatred in her eyes."What do you want?""Please." I could barely speak. My voice was hoarse from screaming, my body still trembling from the bond's severance. "I need to know. Is she—is Elena—""Dead?" Her laugh was hollow. "Yes. She's dead.""I need to see her. Please. One last time.""It's too late." Sarah leaned against the doorframe, her arms crossed. "She's already gone. The witches said there was nothing left when the ritual ended. Just... empty space where she used to be."My legs gave out.I sank to my knees on Sarah's doorstep, and for the second time that day, I wept."She left something for you." Sarah's voice was cold, but not entirely without mercy. "A letter. She wrote it the day before she left."She disappeared into the house and returned a moment later with an envelope. Plain white. Elena's handwriting on the front. For Blake. To be delivered after.I took it with trembling hands."I hope yo

  • When I’m Gone, You Love   Chapter 30: Not in this lifetime

Blake’s povI found myself knocking on Jacob’s door again. I pushed open the door without waiting for his permission. He was seated on his chair. He didn't look up when I sat down across from him."I need to know where she is.""No.""Jacob, please. I know I don't deserve—""You're right." He finally looked at me, and the hatred in his eyes made my wolf flinch. "You don't deserve anything. Not even the time it takes to tell you to go to hell."I opened my mouth to talk when I spotted the ring on his finger. "What is that?" The bark left my lips before I could stop it. "On your hand. What is that?"Jacob glanced down at the ring. "It's none of your business.""Were you with her before she left?” I stood up, Were you together? Did you—"His fist connected with my jaw.I hit the floor, "You didn't even know she was sick." His voice cracked. "You were her mate—her fate mate, the one who was supposed to protect her—and you didn't notice she was dying. For months. For MONTHS, Blake.""I
