Chapter 3

Autor: Elaine Ainsworth
"Not only do I want to resign, but I also want a divorce, Jillian. I'll send the divorce agreement to you when the time comes," I declared.

I ignored Jillian's furious shouts, slamming the door open and taking my leave.

I had just exited Dunn Group's office building when I received a message from my bank. 50,000 dollars had been deposited into my account, no more, no less.

My phone began ringing then. It was Elise Swan, the president of Starshower Group.

"Did you receive the money, Felix?"

"I did. Thank you, Ms. Swan," I answered lightly.

I could hear her laughing on the other end of the line. "No need to thank me. I just want to make it clear that by accepting my money, you also belong to me now."

Although I knew that she was just joking, I could feel the tips of my ears heating up. "Don't worry, Ms. Swan. I'll definitely show up at the office on time."

Elise hummed in acknowledgement before asking curiously, "I contacted you so many times in the past, but you always rejected my offers, claiming that you were going to stay by Jillian's side no matter what happened. Why did you suddenly change your mind?"

I let out a self-deprecating laugh before replying, "I just had an epiphany, that's all. I finally understand that some people don't deserve my blood, sweat, and tears."

Compared to Starshower Group, Dunn Group was nothing more than a tiny and insignificant business. If given the choice to work for either company, any ordinary citizen would choose to work for Starshower Group.

Elise had offered me a contract with incredible benefits that no sane person could refuse. However, because I loved Jillian, I had rejected Elise's offers ten times.

Perhaps my unwavering loyalty was what emboldened Jillian to hurt and humiliate me without even batting an eye. Even a third-rate university graduate, who didn't have a clue about what he was doing and only knew how to coax women, was bold enough to trample all over me.

I wanted to slap myself when I thought about everything that I had been forced to endure.

After ending the call, I immediately headed to the hospital to pay the deposit for the cochlear implant. I then headed home after completing all the necessary paperwork.

When I opened the door, I saw Jillian talking to Freya using sign language, which made me think I was hallucinating for a split second.

Jillian pretended that nothing had happened between us when she spotted me standing at the door in a daze. She padded over to me and locked her arm with mine affectionately. Her voice was sweet when she spoke, devoid of any of the haughtiness that was present earlier in the afternoon.

"Why did you just come back now, Felix? Freya's painting skills have been improving with each passing day. Oh, that's right. I told the maid to prepare a few more dishes tonight. It's been a while since the three of us had a meal together."

Jillian and I had been married for five years. She had always thought of Freya as a burden and hated her with all her heart. She rarely even looked at Freya, let alone shared a meal with her. Yet, she had uncharacteristically struck up a conversation with Freya today.

I couldn't shake the feeling that Jillian was plotting something. I retracted my arm and eyed her warily. "What are you up to? I'm warning you, Jillian. I don't care what you're scheming, but leave Freya out of it. I won't forgive you if you drag her into this."

Jillian's smile stiffened when she noticed how discourteous I was being. A hint of impatience flickered in her eyes, but she suppressed the simmering anger within her.

"Darling, are you still angry about what happened yesterday and this morning? I was just messing around with you. Once tomorrow's project launch meeting is over, I'll have the finance department send you the money you deserve, okay?"

I immediately knew what Jillian was up to upon hearing her words. I was the manager of Project Charlie, so I knew the project's details like the back of my hand.

Many key leaders and partners would be attending the project launch meeting the following day. If I were absent, the meeting couldn't possibly go on.

I scoffed and said, "Ms. Dunn, I've already resigned. Your company's matters do not concern me."

Jillian dropped the act completely. "Felix, I've already lowered myself to your level to talk to you, so you should know when to stop this nonsense too!" she roared.

Behind me, Jillian let out a heartbroken wail. She didn't give up despite what I told her that day and kept seeking me out.Growing tired of her constant harassment, I put in a request with Elise to be transferred out of the country, and she readily agreed.Only when I boarded the plane did I learn that the colleague accompanying me out of the country was none other than Elise herself.Seeing me frozen to the spot in a daze, she faked a stern voice and asked, "What are you looking at? Am I not allowed to abuse my authority as the boss of the company?"I chuckled and nodded. "Of course, you can. You're the boss, after all. Your word is law."Freed from Jillian's harassment, I dedicated myself to my work and secured several major projects for Starshower Group in a single month.Elise was also exceptionally generous toward me, rewarding me with handsome bonuses that kept increasing. Finally, I was able to afford the best cochlear implant surgery for Freya. Every hurdle I had to ov

"John's right," Jillian said. "We're not officially divorced yet, Felix. You're obligated to pay half of the company's debts. You're the vice president of Starshower Group. Dunn Group will be saved as long as you give us any two of your projects. You won't have to pay the debts then."She must think that I would obediently acquiesce to her demands by threatening me with Dunn's Group's debts. Instead, I calmly sent her a document."So, you want to bring the law into the equation, huh? You might want to reconsider your decision after taking a good look at the financial statement I just sent you."Ever since Jillian started fooling around with Jonathan, she had been spending an exorbitant amount of money on him. She bought him all sorts of luxury items and took him on trips all around the world. When she ran out of money, she would use the company's funds. It was estimated that she had used millions of dollars of the company's money.Since Jillian was the president, the finance depar

Jillian said, "If the interns gain more experience and grow more proficient quickly, our company will also reap the benefits and be able to—"I interrupted her preposterous explanation. "So, you're telling me that you admire his talent for ordering food delivery? Or were you impressed by his ways of coaxing a woman?"Forget it. It's pointless to continue talking about this now. Why don't you use the time you have left to come up with a plan with that talented intern of yours for the future of Dunn Group? Oh, that's right. I'll send the divorce agreement to you shortly."It'll be ideal for us to have an amicable separation. Of course, if you want to escalate the case to court, I'll be more than happy to assist you through to the very end. But I do wonder if the court will take your side once they see the evidence I have of your infidelity."I knew Jillian wouldn't be willing to hand Dunn Group over to me. That afternoon, she sent the divorce agreement back to me with her signature o

"Both Freya and I are humans too, Jillian. We have the right to live comfortably. Since you decided to mistreat me first, don't blame me for retaliating in my own way," I said.Jillian's expression twisted. A long moment passed before she exclaimed, "You shouldn't have done this no matter how angry you are, Felix! Dunn Group won't be able to last long without Project Charlie."I'll tell the finance department to transfer 50,000 dollars to you now. I'll let you have full control over the project too."My resolve didn't waver. "It's too late. I'm an employee of Starshower Group now."Jillian clambered off the stage and grabbed my arm. "It's fine. You can leave Starshower Group and return to Dunn Group," she said anxiously. "Don't worry about the compensation fee, I'll cover it for you."I retracted my arm and said coldly, "I don't want to."The guests began to whisper among themselves as they watched the scene unfold before them."It looks like Dunn Group has no stake in Project C

Jillian's smile stiffened on her face. Confusion flickered in her eyes as she numbly watched Elise confidently ascend the stage. She only snapped back to her senses when thunderous applause erupted within the hall.Unconcerned with the consequences, Jillian rushed onto the stage. She looked like she had lost her mind as she tried to yank Elise off the stage in front of all the guests."Elise, Project Charlie belongs to Dunn Group. What gives you the right to be on stage? Get off the stage now!"Fortunately, Elise had been well-prepared. With one wave of her hand, the security guards rushed forward and grabbed Jillian, holding her in place.Elise calmly straightened her wrinkled clothes as she stared into Jillian's furious eyes. "I knew that you weren't very bright, Ms. Dunn, but I had no idea your eyes and ears weren't working properly as well. Can't you see my company's name on the screen? Didn't you hear the host call my name?"Jillian's eyes reddened as she became even more emo

"Don't think that you're the only person in the company who can take charge of this project!" Jillian exclaimed.I looked at her and smiled, though it didn't reach my eyes. "Dunn Group has many talented employees. I'm sure that you'll find the best candidate to handle the project, Ms. Dunn."Jillian's expression turned steely. "Don't come crying to me later, Felix!"I nodded. "Don't worry. The one thing I regret the most is joining Dunn Group to help you. I don't regret resigning at all.""Great!" Jillian grabbed her phone and pointed at the time before hissing coldly, "I'm giving you five minutes. Take Freya and get out of my house now."My eyes widened as I stared at her with disbelief. "Have you lost your mind, Jillian? This is my home!""But only my name is on the deed," she replied, her tone colored with self-righteousness.My eyes reddened as my chest heaved. To prove how much I loved her, I had written only Jillian's name on the property deed when I bought the house. I ha
