Chapter 4

Author: Elaine Ainsworth
"Don't think that you're the only person in the company who can take charge of this project!" Jillian exclaimed.

I looked at her and smiled, though it didn't reach my eyes. "Dunn Group has many talented employees. I'm sure that you'll find the best candidate to handle the project, Ms. Dunn."

Jillian's expression turned steely. "Don't come crying to me later, Felix!"

I nodded. "Don't worry. The one thing I regret the most is joining Dunn Group to help you. I don't regret resigning at all."

"Great!" Jillian grabbed her phone and pointed at the time before hissing coldly, "I'm giving you five minutes. Take Freya and get out of my house now."

My eyes widened as I stared at her with disbelief. "Have you lost your mind, Jillian? This is my home!"

"But only my name is on the deed," she replied, her tone colored with self-righteousness.

My eyes reddened as my chest heaved. To prove how much I loved her, I had written only Jillian's name on the property deed when I bought the house. I had no idea that there would come a day when Jillian would use my love for her against me to kick Freya and I to the curb.

Seeing that I wasn't budging, Jillian grabbed Freya's sleeve and began dragging her toward the door. Her rough actions shocked Freya, who screamed.

I hastily dragged Freya behind me and glared at Jillian with clenched teeth. "Don't touch her! Take out your frustrations on me instead!"

Jillian let out a mocking laugh before saying coldly, "Do you think I would willingly touch her? I'm just helping you move out, that's all."

She rushed into Freya's room and grabbed the only photograph we had of Freya and I with our deceased parents.

My pupils contracted. "Don't touch that photo, Jillian!" I yelled, my voice trembling.

Freya also began to shriek at Jillian, seemingly out of immense stress.

Jillian glared at Freya hatefully. "Shut up! You're making too much noise! If I hear another peep from you, I'm going to burn this photo!"

I immediately covered Freya's mouth with my hand. "I'll show up at tomorrow's project launch meeting as long as you promise to leave the photo alone," I said hoarsely.

Satisfied with my response, Jillian dropped the photo onto the carpet. "If only you were this obedient from the very beginning. Freya wouldn't have had to experience such a terrible shock."

She then smugly strolled toward the door. She stepped on the photo frame with her high heels as she passed, causing the glass to crack like a spider web.

Before closing the door behind her, Jillian turned to look at me and said, "That bitch, Elise, will be present at the project launch meeting too. You'd better give your best performance tomorrow, or you can forget about treating Freya's ears."

I curled my hands into tight fists as I stared at the closed door, a sense of loathing slowly spreading within me.

The next day, I put on a tailored suit before heading over to Project Charlie's launch meeting.

Jillian was holding onto Jonathan's arm as she enthusiastically introduced him to the guests. She had also given him the credit for the project proposal that I had painstakingly put together.

Jonathan was the first to notice my arrival. He intentionally ushered Jillian over to me and said, "Mr. Lennox, Jill has promised to let me have full control over Project Charlie once the launch meeting is over."

"John is still young, so he needs to be attached to some big projects to bulk up his résumé," Jillian explained self-righteously. "As for you, you can be his assistant."

I scoffed, saying nothing.

The happier they were now, the more devastated they would be later.

Jonathan was grinning at me smugly when the host announced that the project launch meeting had officially started.

Straightening her clothes, Jillian prepared to ascend the stage to give her speech. She didn't expect the next words that came out of the host's mouth.

"Now, let us welcome Ms. Elise Swan, the person-in-charge of Project Charlie, to come up to the stage to give a speech."

Meanwhile, Dunn Group's logo, which was originally projected on the screen, transformed into Starshower Group's logo.

Behind me, Jillian let out a heartbroken wail. She didn't give up despite what I told her that day and kept seeking me out.Growing tired of her constant harassment, I put in a request with Elise to be transferred out of the country, and she readily agreed.Only when I boarded the plane did I learn that the colleague accompanying me out of the country was none other than Elise herself.Seeing me frozen to the spot in a daze, she faked a stern voice and asked, "What are you looking at? Am I not allowed to abuse my authority as the boss of the company?"I chuckled and nodded. "Of course, you can. You're the boss, after all. Your word is law."Freed from Jillian's harassment, I dedicated myself to my work and secured several major projects for Starshower Group in a single month.Elise was also exceptionally generous toward me, rewarding me with handsome bonuses that kept increasing. Finally, I was able to afford the best cochlear implant surgery for Freya. "John's right," Jillian said. "We're not officially divorced yet, Felix. You're obligated to pay half of the company's debts. You're the vice president of Starshower Group. Dunn Group will be saved as long as you give us any two of your projects. You won't have to pay the debts then."She must think that I would obediently acquiesce to her demands by threatening me with Dunn's Group's debts. Instead, I calmly sent her a document."So, you want to bring the law into the equation, huh? You might want to reconsider your decision after taking a good look at the financial statement I just sent you."Ever since Jillian started fooling around with Jonathan, she had been spending an exorbitant amount of money on him. She bought him all sorts of luxury items and took him on trips all around the world. When she ran out of money, she would use the company's funds. It was estimated that she had used millions of dollars of the company's money.Since Jillian was the president, the finance depar

Jillian said, "If the interns gain more experience and grow more proficient quickly, our company will also reap the benefits and be able to—"I interrupted her preposterous explanation. "So, you're telling me that you admire his talent for ordering food delivery? Or were you impressed by his ways of coaxing a woman?"Forget it. It's pointless to continue talking about this now. Why don't you use the time you have left to come up with a plan with that talented intern of yours for the future of Dunn Group? Oh, that's right. I'll send the divorce agreement to you shortly."It'll be ideal for us to have an amicable separation. Of course, if you want to escalate the case to court, I'll be more than happy to assist you through to the very end. But I do wonder if the court will take your side once they see the evidence I have of your infidelity."I knew Jillian wouldn't be willing to hand Dunn Group over to me. That afternoon, she sent the divorce agreement back to me with her signature o

"Both Freya and I are humans too, Jillian. We have the right to live comfortably. Since you decided to mistreat me first, don't blame me for retaliating in my own way," I said.Jillian's expression twisted. A long moment passed before she exclaimed, "You shouldn't have done this no matter how angry you are, Felix! Dunn Group won't be able to last long without Project Charlie."I'll tell the finance department to transfer 50,000 dollars to you now. I'll let you have full control over the project too."My resolve didn't waver. "It's too late. I'm an employee of Starshower Group now."Jillian clambered off the stage and grabbed my arm. "It's fine. You can leave Starshower Group and return to Dunn Group," she said anxiously. "Don't worry about the compensation fee, I'll cover it for you."I retracted my arm and said coldly, "I don't want to."The guests began to whisper among themselves as they watched the scene unfold before them."It looks like Dunn Group has no stake in Project C

Jillian's smile stiffened on her face. Confusion flickered in her eyes as she numbly watched Elise confidently ascend the stage. She only snapped back to her senses when thunderous applause erupted within the hall.Unconcerned with the consequences, Jillian rushed onto the stage. She looked like she had lost her mind as she tried to yank Elise off the stage in front of all the guests."Elise, Project Charlie belongs to Dunn Group. What gives you the right to be on stage? Get off the stage now!"Fortunately, Elise had been well-prepared. With one wave of her hand, the security guards rushed forward and grabbed Jillian, holding her in place.Elise calmly straightened her wrinkled clothes as she stared into Jillian's furious eyes. "I knew that you weren't very bright, Ms. Dunn, but I had no idea your eyes and ears weren't working properly as well. Can't you see my company's name on the screen? Didn't you hear the host call my name?"Jillian's eyes reddened as she became even more emo
