Chapter 2

Author: Bright Lights
Zach was the last one home.

My mom, Linda Shaw, had made a whole table of food, every dish one of Mia's favorites.

My dad, Robert Shaw, set two homemade boxes on the table. "All right. Tomorrow's the weekend, so it's time to draw again."

"Nora, you're the older sister. You go first."

I put down my fork. I didn't want to eat food I didn't even like, and I didn't want to play a game I'd never agreed to.

"I'm not drawing. Zach is my boyfriend. There's nothing strange about me going on dates with him, so why do I have to draw from a box for the privilege?"

Mia lowered her eyes, ran into the kitchen, and when she emerged, she once again held a kitchen knife to her neck.

"So you're blaming me, Nora? Fine. I'll just die, then. I won't get in your way anymore!"

The blade was still a couple of inches from her neck, but everyone immediately panicked, crying and begging her to put it down.

Zach shot me an accusing look too. "You know what condition your sister's in. We're just humoring her to keep her calm. Why do you have to make such a big deal out of it? Just pick one."

"You've had bad luck every other time. Maybe you'll get lucky today."

Linda wiped at her tears. "It's fifty-fifty. Can't you just give Mia a little consideration? You can't seriously stand there and watch your own sister kill herself."

I sat there in silence for a moment.

"Fine. Then let her draw first."

Mia's expression immediately soured.

Linda frowned at me.

Robert slapped the table. "Mia was kind enough to let you go first, and now you're starting trouble again? What's with that miserable face all day? Who exactly are you trying to punish?"

"I don't need her to let me." I grabbed one of the boxes. "This one's mine, so the other one is yours, Mia. If you don't want to open it yourself, I'll do it for you. That's what big sisters are for."

Mia went deathly pale, and tears instantly streamed down her face.

"Nora, is this because Mom and Dad had me, and I took away all the attention that used to belong to you? Is that why you always treat me like this?

"Fine. It's all my fault. I never should've been born. I shouldn't even be alive. I'll just die right now."

She dropped the knife with a clatter, spun around, and started fumbling with the window.

Linda and Robert rushed over, making a show of grabbing her and talking her down.

None of it surprised me anymore.

I'd seen it too many times.

"That's enough, Nora. She's your own sister. If you won't open yours, I will."

Zach snatched the box from my hand and tore it open himself. Then he held up the slip inside.

"[Sit This One Out].

"Nora, I'm sorry. Looks like I'll have to take Mia out to dinner again.

"But don't worry. I swear I'll never betray you."

He certainly made it sound good.

Too bad he'd already betrayed me.

The second my slip turned out to be [Sit This One Out], Mia miraculously recovered. She stopped trying to kill herself and hurried over to me with a triumphant smile.

"Looks like luck's on my side again, Nora. Guess some people just have it better.

"So Zach and I get another date this weekend!"

Zach didn't correct her. He only lowered his head, avoiding my eyes.

I picked up the other box.

"All right. Let me open yours too and see what kind of good luck you got. Maybe some of it will rub off on me."

The moment I moved to open it, all four of them looked alarmed.

Robert snatched the box from my hand and shoved it into his pocket.

Linda jabbed a finger at me. "You already got your result. Why are you touching Mia's?"

"You're being completely unreasonable. You bullied Mia when you were little, and now you're still bullying her as an adult. Do you have to keep stirring up trouble until this family falls apart?"

Robert stood there with his hands behind his back, seething.

"If I'd known you'd grow up to be this rotten, I would've strangled you the day you were born!"

As soon as the argument broke out, Zach stepped in to play peacemaker again.

"Mr. and Mrs. Shaw, please. I know you love Nora too. You're angry right now, so please don't say things you'll regret."

After soothing them in that gentle voice of his, he lowered his eyes to me.

"Nora, how can you talk to your parents like that? Mine died when I was young. Do you have any idea how much I envy you for still having parents who care about you? And yet you don't appreciate them at all. You just keep causing trouble."

He looked at me with disappointment.

"I'm really disappointed in you."

"Why do you always have to be better than me at everything? You got better grades, you have a better career, and even your boyfriend is hopelessly in love with you."It's not fair!"I watched in silence as the police took Mia away.Mia had never loved Zach. She was simply selfish. She'd always resented my existence because it meant she no longer had our parents' love all to herself.Whereas I'd done well at everything since we were kids, and she'd hated me for it. Whatever I had, she wanted to take from me.That included my boyfriend.By now, she'd come to think of Zach as something that belonged to her. When he tried to leave, she couldn't accept losing control of him. That was why she'd stabbed him the moment he stopped doing what she wanted. She'd been prepared to take him down with her.Zach was rushed to the hospital covered in blood.Linda and Robert knelt beside his hospital bed in tears, begging him to write a statement asking for leniency for Mia."Zach, we're sorry, but pleas

"Your parents are unbelievable. Even after I laid everything out for them, they kept trying to talk me into staying with Mia and bad-mouthing you. What kind of parents do that?"Zach had heard me talk about my childhood before, but I'd never gone into much detail. Most of what I'd mentioned had sounded like small things such as food, clothes, the way I was treated at home.So he hadn't thought much of it.His own childhood had been happy. His parents argued sometimes, but they'd always loved him. They took him on trips whenever they could and did everything possible to give him the things he wanted. That love was what had carried him through all the years after their deaths.Maybe that was why, deep down, he'd always believed families were supposed to be like his had been. There might be fights and arguments, but underneath it all, there was warmth and love. But the family Liam described, and the one Zach was finally beginning to see for himself, was nothing like that. All he saw was p

We also talked about the problems we ran into at work.Having a friend like Liam in my life was more than enough for me.What I hadn't expected was to see Zach again. One afternoon, he was waiting outside my office building. The moment he saw me, his eyes reddened, and he rushed over."Nora, I finally found you."He lunged toward me, but I backed several steps away before he could reach me.His face was full of emotion. Mine wasn't."What do you want?"The distance in my voice seemed to hit him hard. Tears immediately welled in his eyes."I'm sorry, Nora. I was wrong. I thought Mia was the one who saved my life, and that's why I kept taking her side."I didn't find out until later that I'd gotten the wrong person. It was you. You were the one who saved me all along."I mistook her for my rescuer, and because of that, I did so many things that hurt you. Can you forgive me?"I looked at Zach as he stood there pleading with me, and I didn't feel the slightest trace of reluctance or linger

Robert waved a hand dismissively. "Good riddance. Now the two of you can get on with your lives."Mia gazed at Zach and said softly, "Now that Nora's gone, there won't be any more fighting at home. Isn't that better?"Looking at the three of them, Zach couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.He took a step back without answering."She's left home, and none of you are worried about her?"Robert said nothing.Linda gave an awkward smile. "Nora can take care of herself. What's there to worry about?"Zach studied the three of them carefully. Not one of them showed the slightest concern for Nora.It suddenly occurred to him that these weren't things a loving family should be saying.Keeping his thoughts to himself, Zach started reaching out to everyone he could think of. He contacted Nora's old classmates, trying to piece together everything he could about her past."Nora was close to Liam. You should ask him."It took several people before Zach finally managed to get in touch wi

"What did you say? Mia can't swim?"Zach went completely still. If Mia couldn't swim, then who had saved him?"Are you sure you're remembering right?"The guy's name was Liam Carter. He had grown up with both Nora and Mia. He and Nora were the same age, while Mia was several years younger.Liam thought carefully before answering."We went to the same schools from elementary school through college. At least the entire time I've known them, Mia couldn't swim."I still remember the summer after junior year. A bunch of us went swimming together, and she wouldn't even get in the water unless she had this huge inflatable ring around her. She was terrified."Unless she got so embarrassed after we made fun of her that she finally forced herself to learn?"Liam kept talking, but Zach wasn't hearing a word anymore. He stumbled out of the reunion and rushed all the way home.Mia glanced at the time when he came through the door."Why are you back so early?"Then she noticed his face. "Go on, then. Don't come running back if you leave."Zach's harsh words followed me from behind.I didn't look back. I strode straight out without a trace of reluctance. There was nothing in that house worth missing anyway. It had originally been a home for just Zach and me.Then my parents said they could no longer make ends meet back in the countryside and showed up asking to stay with us.I hadn't wanted to let them move in. But after Zach's parents died, he'd spent years being passed around among relatives, always feeling like a guest in someone else's home. He missed having a real family around, so he begged me to let them stay. And what had come of it?I hadn't felt an ounce of familial warmth. Every day, they either asked me for money or took something of mine and gave it to Mia.My bedroom. The car I'd bought. And now even Zach. They'd taken him from me and handed him to Mia too.I dragged my suitcase all the way out of the apartment complex, and not one person came after me.I
