Chapter 2

Author: Mister Rhapsody
"Hey, driver. Ms. Richmond wants you over there."

I was waiting in the car for Faith when someone suddenly called out to me.

She had come to the set to accompany Bridger. When I arrived, they were filming a scene where the male lead had to fall into the water.

It was late autumn, and the water was bitterly cold. Bridger stood by the pool with his arm around Faith, his voice soft and affected.

"Faith, I've always been weak since I was a kid—"

Faith immediately took his hand. "Don't worry. That's why I found you a stand-in."

Her eyes fell on me, and the staff turned to look as well. They all sneered without saying a word.

Only the director dared to speak up, "Ms. Richmond, I know you're worried about Bridger, but this scene is important. We can't afford to be careless. How can we just grab some help to fill in?

"We'd be better off having the older production assistant do it."

I looked down at the clothes I was wearing, washed so many times they had faded white, and had nothing to say.

Faith, however, was confident. "Just put some makeup on him."

When I came out of the makeup room, everyone was stunned.

"How can they look so alike?"

"Looks like Ms. Richmond really is crazy about Bridger. Even her driver looks like she picked him specifically to resemble him..."

The makeup covered the sickly pallor of my face, and for the first time in years, I looked a little like the young man I used to be.

They all thought Bridger and I looked alike, but no one knew that I'd known Faith for many more years than Bridger had.

"What are you waiting for? Jump. Don't keep Bridger waiting!" Faith was nestled against Bridger's chest, impatiently ordering me around.

I walked to the edge of the pool. Only then did I see how deep it was, cold mist curling off the surface. My body, already wasting away from a terminal illness, instinctively recoiled.

"I'm not feeling well, Ms. Richmond. Find a professional actor."

"You're a grown man. Why are you being so dramatic? It would take at least half an hour to find someone. Bridger needs to finish filming so he can have dinner with me."

Her gaze shifted to me, and the tenderness she'd shown Bridger turned cold in an instant. "Are you jumping or not? Do I need to find someone to push you in?"

A deep shiver ran through me. Her words alone made me feel as though I were trapped in an icebox, struggling to breathe.

I'd endured seven years of this. I could endure one last time.

Clenching my fists, I looked up at Faith. "Once I make this jump, we're even."

She frowned. "What do you mean?"

"Do you remember when we got married, and I borrowed $900,000 from you?

"For these seven years, I've been your assistant, your housekeeper, and your driver. I barely had a day off. If you add up the three salaries, you should have been paying me at least $10,000 a month!"

I pulled out the little notebook I always carried with me. Every single thing was recorded, down to the last detail.

"I'm risking my life with this jump. Charging you $3,000 isn't much. After this, the $900,000 will be completely paid off. Faith, there will be nothing between us anymore."

Before Faith could respond, I leaped straight into the pool. The icy water swallowed me instantly, numbing my consciousness and what little life remained in my failing body.

But I didn't struggle. I felt only the relief of finally being free as my body slowly sank.

Just as I was about to drown, a familiar figure wrapped her arms around me and dragged me to shore.

"August, are you insane? If we hadn't gotten to you in time, do you know you could have actually died?!"

Looking at Faith's panicked, furious face, I smiled. "You hate me so much. Wouldn't you be happy if I died?"

They didn't understand why Faith cared so much about me—just a driver—giving me CPR herself and helping me into the car.

Even Bridger looked jealous. He followed Faith with a dark expression.

"Couldn't you have someone else take him to the hospital? Faith, you promised you'd have dinner with me."

From late autumn to early winter, and then through the snow-filled days, Faith stayed at the hospital with me.Isabel wouldn't let her into my room, so she waited outside the window.Everyone else had bundled themselves into thick down jackets, but she still wore only a single layer, as though she couldn't feel the cold. Whenever I looked over, I could see the same lovestruck look in her eyes. When you're close to death, perhaps even your heart becomes softer.I was afraid she'd freeze to death if she kept this up, so I agreed to see her one last time."August, I really never loved Bridger. I took back everything I'd given him, and I've even had him blacklisted throughout the industry. He's living a terrible life now. Are you a little happier?"When I didn't respond, she walked straight over to the window and blocked the draft coming through the gap.The hospital room was actually warm enough. She didn't need to do that, but she did it anyway.Just like back when we lived in th

"August, I'm sorry. I really am."You shouldn't have kept the truth from me. You should have told me everything. You were afraid I couldn't handle losing you, but do you know what it did to me, knowing you were alive but not by my side? That hurt even more."I don't dare ask for your forgiveness. I'm only asking you to let me stay by your side and walk with you through the final journey of your life. Please don't let Isabel keep me away anymore. I'll transfer all my money into your name..."August, I didn't refuse to give you money all these years just because I wanted revenge. More than anything, I was afraid that if you had money of your own, you'd leave me again. I couldn't bear living without you. I really couldn't."Faith's tears were already streaming down her face.Ever since Isabel had left and Faith was finally allowed into my hospital room, she'd been crying nonstop. The guilt and pain in her eyes were almost tangible, crushing her beneath their weight.I couldn't help

My condition was deteriorating faster than I'd imagined. As soon as winter began, I became too weak to keep working and could no longer afford to pay Isabel back for the medication she'd bought me.When Isabel saw that I'd rather wait for death than take even a single dose of her medicine, she grew anxious."If you take my medicine, then you owe me. We grew up together. Do you really expect me to just stand by and watch you die so you won't owe me anything?"I understood what Isabel meant. There were debts of money in this world, but there were emotional debts, too.If I really died without accepting her help, I had no idea how I'd ever repay this friendship. When I remained silent, Isabel said firmly, "That's enough. I'm taking you out for a proper dinner tonight. Tomorrow, you're checking into the hospital. Even if they can't cure you, at least you won't have to suffer as much in the end..."I didn't know how to refuse, so I nodded.Perhaps the thought of checking into the ho

"I really don't know what you're being so stubborn about. You've settled things with Faith, fine. But what have I ever done to you? You have to work to pay me back even for a few bottles of medicine. Do you really think I care about that little bit of money?"As Isabel Newton spoke, she returned the money I'd given her. She wouldn't accept a bank transfer, and she wouldn't take cash either.I had no choice but to admit the truth: "I just want to leave this world with a clean slate. I don't want to owe anyone anything..."Isabel knew about everything between Faith and me. She sighed and reluctantly took the money back. "Tomorrow is your dad's anniversary. Let's go see him together."I nodded. Then Isabel asked, "Is Faith still contacting you?"I lowered my head. A new message had just come through on my phone.[August, I was wrong. I really know I was wrong. You can hit me, curse at me, hate me, and I'll accept it all. I just beg you, don't abandon me like you did before, okay?]

I had originally planned to show it to her.I couldn't afford treatment, and I thought that no matter how much she hated me, she'd at least give me enough money to keep me from suffering too much during my final days. But that day, she deliberately told me she'd spend our anniversary with me and summoned me to Bridger's birthday party. Then she slapped me in front of everyone and said that a driver like me had no right to enter the private room. Bridger and his friends burst out laughing, treating me like their personal joke. For seven years, I'd been through countless scenes like that. I was afraid and didn't dare show it to her anymore."Because I owed you money, and I finally managed to pay it all back. I don't dare owe you anything again. Faith, every day I spent with you was a nightmare."I gritted my teeth and finished speaking, then hugged my battered suitcase and kept crawling toward the door. When Faith came after me again, her eyes red, all I had left for her was a bo

  • When Love Runs Out   Chapter 4

It was all because Faith didn't want me to have any time to myself. She couldn't stand the thought of seeing even the slightest trace of happiness or ease on my face."Ah..." I let out a long breath and quickened my pace, pushing my suitcase as I left.At last, I was going to be free."Where are you going? Playing the victim didn't work, so now you're pulling this running-away-from-home act?"I'd been a step too slow, and Faith blocked me in the courtyard. That suffocating feeling came rushing back. I couldn't be bothered to say another word. I tried to walk around her and leave. She grabbed my arm."Don't touch me!" I violently shook her off and turned to glare at her. "I told you. I've paid back everything I owed you. From now on, we have nothing to do with each other.""Heh." Faith let out a soft laugh. "August, I've seen this little 'retreat to advance' trick countless times in business. You think I'm still that naive girl I was back then? That easy to fool?"I'd heard var
