Chapter 3

Author: Mister Rhapsody
Faith, who had always given Bridger whatever he asked for, hesitated. "He's my servant, after all. I can't exactly let something happen to him."

She held me tightly and quickened her pace.

For a moment, it felt as though we'd gone back ten years.

Back then, we'd just graduated from college and were living in a basement apartment in the suburbs. To give Faith a better life, I'd work myself to the bone at a second job even after finishing my regular shift.

The exhaustion, combined with the damp cold of the basement, caused me to come down with a severe fever one winter. I was so sick that I was barely conscious.

Snow covered the road up to my knees, and we couldn't get a cab.

So Faith supported me like this and ran with me all the way from the suburbs to a hospital seven kilometers away without stopping once.

She was exhausted to the point of collapse, her clothes soaked through with melted snow and sweat, yet she still forced herself to buy me roasted chestnuts and stayed beside me, crying and watching over me.

"August, please say something. Don't scare me..." She cried in fear, looking as though she couldn't survive without me.

And yet, I still left her later.

When she threw everything aside to find me, she discovered that I'd gotten together with a wealthy businesswoman. So maybe she'd hated me this much because she'd once loved me too much.

She'd tormented me for seven years and still wasn't satisfied.

"You're so afraid I'll die. Do you want to torment me for the rest of my life?" I smiled, both relieved and bitter. "But you won't get your wish. Faith, I have a terminal illness. I have only three months left."

The moment I finished speaking, Faith stopped dead.

"Terminal illness?" she whispered the words hoarsely, then shoved me hard, sending me crashing to the ground.

The panic and concern in her eyes vanished completely, leaving behind nothing but coldness.

With the look of someone who had seen right through me, she let out a bitter laugh. "How could you suddenly have a terminal illness when everything was fine? Is this some new trick you've come up with after keeping it up for seven years?

"You realized that pretending to be obedient and caring about me wasn't working, so you decided to settle the accounts between us, make me worry about you, and then pull out this terminal-illness story to trick me into spending money on you?

"What a shame, August! The truth is, I'd already started softening toward you. If you'd just endured it a little longer, you might have gotten what you wanted. But you were too impatient!"

Her laughter grew louder and more unrestrained. She stared down at me, expecting to see frustration and regret on my face.

But she saw none of it. There was only the detached calm that comes after a heart has completely died.

"Hmph. Let's see how long you can keep pretending." She strode past me and forced a smile as she reached for Bridger's hand. "Didn't you say we were going to dinner? What are you waiting for? Get in the car."

Watching the two of them acting so intimate, I didn't even have the strength left to feel hurt.

My whole body felt as though it had been shattered. I barely managed to crawl to the back seat, gritting my teeth against the pain.

When I opened the door to get in, Faith shoved me away. "What are you doing? Didn't you hear me? I'm going with Bridger. Take a cab to the hospital yourself!"

I stood there, stunned, watching through endless pain and despair as Faith gently took Bridger's hand and got into the car, leaving me behind.

A gust of autumn wind swept past. The bone-deep chill triggered another attack of my illness, every inch of my body filled with tearing pain.

I gritted my teeth against it and waved at the disappearing car.

"Goodbye, Faith. Goodbye forever."

I didn't go to the hospital. After taking some painkillers, I went home to pack my things.

In that enormous mansion, the only thing that belonged to me was a small suitcase. Every piece of clothing inside had been bought when I first arrived. I hadn't added a single new item in seven years. They had all faded to white, just like the sickly pallor of my face.

It was almost laughable.

There were ten servants in that mansion.

Yet I, the husband, was the only one who never got a moment's rest, working until I was nothing but skin and bones.

From late autumn to early winter, and then through the snow-filled days, Faith stayed at the hospital with me.Isabel wouldn't let her into my room, so she waited outside the window.Everyone else had bundled themselves into thick down jackets, but she still wore only a single layer, as though she couldn't feel the cold. Whenever I looked over, I could see the same lovestruck look in her eyes. When you're close to death, perhaps even your heart becomes softer.I was afraid she'd freeze to death if she kept this up, so I agreed to see her one last time."August, I really never loved Bridger. I took back everything I'd given him, and I've even had him blacklisted throughout the industry. He's living a terrible life now. Are you a little happier?"When I didn't respond, she walked straight over to the window and blocked the draft coming through the gap.The hospital room was actually warm enough. She didn't need to do that, but she did it anyway.Just like back when we lived in th

"August, I'm sorry. I really am."You shouldn't have kept the truth from me. You should have told me everything. You were afraid I couldn't handle losing you, but do you know what it did to me, knowing you were alive but not by my side? That hurt even more."I don't dare ask for your forgiveness. I'm only asking you to let me stay by your side and walk with you through the final journey of your life. Please don't let Isabel keep me away anymore. I'll transfer all my money into your name..."August, I didn't refuse to give you money all these years just because I wanted revenge. More than anything, I was afraid that if you had money of your own, you'd leave me again. I couldn't bear living without you. I really couldn't."Faith's tears were already streaming down her face.Ever since Isabel had left and Faith was finally allowed into my hospital room, she'd been crying nonstop. The guilt and pain in her eyes were almost tangible, crushing her beneath their weight.I couldn't help

My condition was deteriorating faster than I'd imagined. As soon as winter began, I became too weak to keep working and could no longer afford to pay Isabel back for the medication she'd bought me.When Isabel saw that I'd rather wait for death than take even a single dose of her medicine, she grew anxious."If you take my medicine, then you owe me. We grew up together. Do you really expect me to just stand by and watch you die so you won't owe me anything?"I understood what Isabel meant. There were debts of money in this world, but there were emotional debts, too.If I really died without accepting her help, I had no idea how I'd ever repay this friendship. When I remained silent, Isabel said firmly, "That's enough. I'm taking you out for a proper dinner tonight. Tomorrow, you're checking into the hospital. Even if they can't cure you, at least you won't have to suffer as much in the end..."I didn't know how to refuse, so I nodded.Perhaps the thought of checking into the ho

"I really don't know what you're being so stubborn about. You've settled things with Faith, fine. But what have I ever done to you? You have to work to pay me back even for a few bottles of medicine. Do you really think I care about that little bit of money?"As Isabel Newton spoke, she returned the money I'd given her. She wouldn't accept a bank transfer, and she wouldn't take cash either.I had no choice but to admit the truth: "I just want to leave this world with a clean slate. I don't want to owe anyone anything..."Isabel knew about everything between Faith and me. She sighed and reluctantly took the money back. "Tomorrow is your dad's anniversary. Let's go see him together."I nodded. Then Isabel asked, "Is Faith still contacting you?"I lowered my head. A new message had just come through on my phone.[August, I was wrong. I really know I was wrong. You can hit me, curse at me, hate me, and I'll accept it all. I just beg you, don't abandon me like you did before, okay?]

I had originally planned to show it to her.I couldn't afford treatment, and I thought that no matter how much she hated me, she'd at least give me enough money to keep me from suffering too much during my final days. But that day, she deliberately told me she'd spend our anniversary with me and summoned me to Bridger's birthday party. Then she slapped me in front of everyone and said that a driver like me had no right to enter the private room. Bridger and his friends burst out laughing, treating me like their personal joke. For seven years, I'd been through countless scenes like that. I was afraid and didn't dare show it to her anymore."Because I owed you money, and I finally managed to pay it all back. I don't dare owe you anything again. Faith, every day I spent with you was a nightmare."I gritted my teeth and finished speaking, then hugged my battered suitcase and kept crawling toward the door. When Faith came after me again, her eyes red, all I had left for her was a bo

  • When Love Runs Out   Chapter 4

It was all because Faith didn't want me to have any time to myself. She couldn't stand the thought of seeing even the slightest trace of happiness or ease on my face."Ah..." I let out a long breath and quickened my pace, pushing my suitcase as I left.At last, I was going to be free."Where are you going? Playing the victim didn't work, so now you're pulling this running-away-from-home act?"I'd been a step too slow, and Faith blocked me in the courtyard. That suffocating feeling came rushing back. I couldn't be bothered to say another word. I tried to walk around her and leave. She grabbed my arm."Don't touch me!" I violently shook her off and turned to glare at her. "I told you. I've paid back everything I owed you. From now on, we have nothing to do with each other.""Heh." Faith let out a soft laugh. "August, I've seen this little 'retreat to advance' trick countless times in business. You think I'm still that naive girl I was back then? That easy to fool?"I'd heard var
