Chapter 4

Author: Mister Rhapsody
It was all because Faith didn't want me to have any time to myself. She couldn't stand the thought of seeing even the slightest trace of happiness or ease on my face.

"Ah..." I let out a long breath and quickened my pace, pushing my suitcase as I left.

At last, I was going to be free.

"Where are you going? Playing the victim didn't work, so now you're pulling this running-away-from-home act?"

I'd been a step too slow, and Faith blocked me in the courtyard.

That suffocating feeling came rushing back. I couldn't be bothered to say another word. I tried to walk around her and leave.

She grabbed my arm.

"Don't touch me!" I violently shook her off and turned to glare at her. "I told you. I've paid back everything I owed you. From now on, we have nothing to do with each other."

"Heh." Faith let out a soft laugh. "August, I've seen this little 'retreat to advance' trick countless times in business. You think I'm still that naive girl I was back then? That easy to fool?"

I'd heard variations of the same words countless times over these seven years.

Nevertheless, I still couldn't become immune to them. The bitterness in my heart was so overwhelming that I couldn't get a single word out.

"Enough. Stop pretending. You've already disappeared for seven days, made yourself look half-dead, and deliberately jumped into the water trying to drown yourself. After going to all that trouble, I'll let you have your way just this once."

She pulled a thick wad of cash from her purse and tossed it at my feet with an amused expression, as though she were doing me a favor.

"Pick it up, say 'Thank you, honey,' and I'll give you another few thousand."

Looking at the woman I'd shared a bed with for seven years and the undisguised mockery in her eyes, I thought it would hurt, but it didn't.

In that moment, I finally understood what it meant for a heart to die.

I met her gaze directly and finally asked, calmly, the question that had tormented me for seven years, "Faith, if all I cared about was money—if I married you just to get my hands on your family's fortune—then why did I endure seven years of hopelessness without leaving? Why didn't I take advantage of my youth and find another wealthy woman? Why stay with you until I'm practically on my deathbed?

"Whether you believe me or not, Faith, I was always sincere about you. But that's all in the past now."

After saying it, the knot in my heart slowly began to loosen. Without waiting for her response, I pushed my suitcase and continued walking away.

"If you weren't after my money, then what the hell were you after?" Faith's furious roar came from behind me.

I couldn't be bothered to say another word. I quickened my pace.

She suddenly chased after me, grabbed me by the hair, and yanked me hard to the ground. "I asked you a question! Why are you running? Answer me!"

Her eyes were red with rage, completely out of control.

But I no longer had the energy to wonder why she was angry. My already unstable condition flared up again. I curled up on the ground, trembling in agony, gritting my teeth but unable to suppress the pain in the slightest.

"Get up! Stop pretending! How could one fall possibly hurt you that badly?"

When she saw my face growing paler and the cold sweat covering my forehead, realizing I wasn't pretending, Faith finally panicked. She crouched down and reached out to lift me.

"Get away from me!" I pushed her away with all the strength I had and struggled toward my suitcase.

Like a clumsy but determined snail, I fought with everything I had to escape this place.

"Okay, okay. You win. August, whatever you want, we can talk about it. Just come to the hospital with me and get checked out, okay?" Faith's voice trembled slightly. Her movements had become much gentler as she cautiously came over to support me.

I instinctively recoiled and accidentally knocked over my battered suitcase. Its fragile plastic shell shattered, exposing the papers inside. The words on the medical diagnosis at the very top were visible.

Faith immediately lunged forward and picked it up.

The world fell silent for two seconds.

Then her hoarse, trembling voice rang out, filled with panic. "August, you... you really have a terminal illness? If it's really true, why didn't you show it to me sooner?"

From late autumn to early winter, and then through the snow-filled days, Faith stayed at the hospital with me.Isabel wouldn't let her into my room, so she waited outside the window.Everyone else had bundled themselves into thick down jackets, but she still wore only a single layer, as though she couldn't feel the cold. Whenever I looked over, I could see the same lovestruck look in her eyes. When you're close to death, perhaps even your heart becomes softer.I was afraid she'd freeze to death if she kept this up, so I agreed to see her one last time."August, I really never loved Bridger. I took back everything I'd given him, and I've even had him blacklisted throughout the industry. He's living a terrible life now. Are you a little happier?"When I didn't respond, she walked straight over to the window and blocked the draft coming through the gap.The hospital room was actually warm enough. She didn't need to do that, but she did it anyway.Just like back when we lived in th

"August, I'm sorry. I really am."You shouldn't have kept the truth from me. You should have told me everything. You were afraid I couldn't handle losing you, but do you know what it did to me, knowing you were alive but not by my side? That hurt even more."I don't dare ask for your forgiveness. I'm only asking you to let me stay by your side and walk with you through the final journey of your life. Please don't let Isabel keep me away anymore. I'll transfer all my money into your name..."August, I didn't refuse to give you money all these years just because I wanted revenge. More than anything, I was afraid that if you had money of your own, you'd leave me again. I couldn't bear living without you. I really couldn't."Faith's tears were already streaming down her face.Ever since Isabel had left and Faith was finally allowed into my hospital room, she'd been crying nonstop. The guilt and pain in her eyes were almost tangible, crushing her beneath their weight.I couldn't help

  • When Love Runs Out   Chapter 7

My condition was deteriorating faster than I'd imagined. As soon as winter began, I became too weak to keep working and could no longer afford to pay Isabel back for the medication she'd bought me.When Isabel saw that I'd rather wait for death than take even a single dose of her medicine, she grew anxious."If you take my medicine, then you owe me. We grew up together. Do you really expect me to just stand by and watch you die so you won't owe me anything?"I understood what Isabel meant. There were debts of money in this world, but there were emotional debts, too.If I really died without accepting her help, I had no idea how I'd ever repay this friendship. When I remained silent, Isabel said firmly, "That's enough. I'm taking you out for a proper dinner tonight. Tomorrow, you're checking into the hospital. Even if they can't cure you, at least you won't have to suffer as much in the end..."I didn't know how to refuse, so I nodded.Perhaps the thought of checking into the ho

"I really don't know what you're being so stubborn about. You've settled things with Faith, fine. But what have I ever done to you? You have to work to pay me back even for a few bottles of medicine. Do you really think I care about that little bit of money?"As Isabel Newton spoke, she returned the money I'd given her. She wouldn't accept a bank transfer, and she wouldn't take cash either.I had no choice but to admit the truth: "I just want to leave this world with a clean slate. I don't want to owe anyone anything..."Isabel knew about everything between Faith and me. She sighed and reluctantly took the money back. "Tomorrow is your dad's anniversary. Let's go see him together."I nodded. Then Isabel asked, "Is Faith still contacting you?"I lowered my head. A new message had just come through on my phone.[August, I was wrong. I really know I was wrong. You can hit me, curse at me, hate me, and I'll accept it all. I just beg you, don't abandon me like you did before, okay?]

I had originally planned to show it to her.I couldn't afford treatment, and I thought that no matter how much she hated me, she'd at least give me enough money to keep me from suffering too much during my final days. But that day, she deliberately told me she'd spend our anniversary with me and summoned me to Bridger's birthday party. Then she slapped me in front of everyone and said that a driver like me had no right to enter the private room. Bridger and his friends burst out laughing, treating me like their personal joke. For seven years, I'd been through countless scenes like that. I was afraid and didn't dare show it to her anymore."Because I owed you money, and I finally managed to pay it all back. I don't dare owe you anything again. Faith, every day I spent with you was a nightmare."I gritted my teeth and finished speaking, then hugged my battered suitcase and kept crawling toward the door. When Faith came after me again, her eyes red, all I had left for her was a bo
