Chapter 1

"It will be 510 thousand dollars. Will you be paying by cash or card?" Charlie Humboldt, my ex, asked as he thrust the payment terminal in my face, nearly poking me in the eye.

He hadn't even taken off his boutonniere yet. The bright red color was glaringly obvious.

I scoffed and shoved his hand aside. "Do you have some loose screws in your head, Charlie? Why do I have to pay for your wedding?"

Charlie straightened his tie with a self-righteous expression. "You should be paying the bill, Lily Rosewood. We were together for three years. I've grown sick and tired of living like a pauper.

"To protect your pride, I gave up on furthering my studies in Volpena. I gave up on my future. I also missed the promotion interview at the company two years ago to take care of you when you were running a high fever."

Charlie held his hand up and counted how many times he made sacrifices for my sake on his fingers. Spit flew from his lips and spattered across my face.

"I lost so much because of you. I'm already giving you a discount by only asking for 510 thousand dollars."

I looked at Charlie.

Three years ago, I was the one who kept vigil by his bedside for three days when he was running a high fever and calling out for his mother. To pay for the astronomically-priced, imported cold medicine, I even pawned off the gold bracelet that Grandma had left for me.

And yet, he wanted to twist the truth and accuse me of holding him back now?

"And what if I refuse to pay?" I asked, glaring at him coldly.

Charlie scoffed and snapped his fingers.

A waiter—Larry Ford, according to his nametag—immediately fixed a smug expression on his face. "Your signature is on the booking confirmation, miss."

He then slapped a wrinkled piece of paper on the table.

A wonky version of my signature had been scribbled on the dotted line. The penmanship was absolutely awful.

"I didn't sign this," I said, reaching out to grab the paper to take a closer look.

Larry hastily snatched it away, looking enraged. "Planning to destroy the evidence, huh? Not on my watch! Besides, the surveillance cameras are recording everything that you do."

I couldn't help but think that Larry was acting more like a hooligan than an actual waiter.

I scanned my surroundings.

Most of the guests had already left the large hall. The only ones left were Charlie's aunts.

They surrounded us, acting as if they were watching a show while they nibbled on their snacks. Greed and malice shone in their eyes, giving off the impression that they wanted to swallow me whole.

"I'm going to call the police," I said, pulling out my phone.

I had just unlocked it when it was snatched out of my hand.

The phone was ruthlessly hurled to the ground. The screen shattered immediately, and the battery popped out.

Charlie stomped on my phone and ground it under his shoe. The sounds of the broken glass shards scraping against the leather soles of his shoes grated on my ears.

"You want to call the police? This is an economic dispute. Even if they do show up, they'll demand that you pay the bill."

Charlie stepped closer to me. The stench of alcohol wafting from his mouth made my stomach churn in disgust.

"Don't test my patience, Lily. Be good and pay the bill. I'll let you walk away unscathed if you do. If you don't, you can forget about leaving this hotel."

Charlie's relatives also chimed in.

"He's right. What's wrong with paying the bill for him when you were together for three years?"

"I'm guessing that she can't afford it. Just look at her shabby clothes."

"Why did she show up for the wedding if she doesn't have money? How shameless!"

Their insults were like needles stabbing my heart.

I took a deep breath and forced myself to calm down.

It was a set-up.

Charlie had planned to ensnare me in his trap from the moment he sent the wedding invitation to me. The toast earlier was a lead-up to the moment he would force the exorbitant bill on me.

The netizens who had criticized me in the past deleted their hateful comments and apologized to me. They then turned on Sasha and Charlie and began leaving scathing comments on their social media accounts instead.Sasha's social media account was flooded with furious messages."You're the fake socialite? What a joke! How shameless do you have to be to flaunt a bag that's only worth 300 dollars?""You were trying to trick someone into marrying you while carrying another man's child. On top of that, you tried to force his ex-girlfriend to pay for your wedding. Only a wicked person like you would come up with something so awful.""She deserves to rot in prison for the rest of her life!"Charlie suffered an even worse fate. His company made a statement the very next day, announcing that they were firing him and looking into pursuing legal action against him for damaging the company's reputation.A few netizens also managed to dig up evidence of Charlie using the company's funds to p

"Wash the dishes?" I repeated. "Unfortunately, my hotel doesn't need a piece of trash to wash the dishes. I don't want you to get your filth all over them."I shook my head before continuing, "Also, this case isn't just a money issue anymore. Your actions thus far include causing trouble, intentional assault, fraud, and extortion."I pulled out a recording device that I had switched on earlier and tapped the play button.Charlie's arrogant voice resounded clearly from the device."After you sign the promissory note, you'll have to pay me 20 thousand dollars every month. Also, I want you to accompany me to meet a client of mine tonight…"The device had also recorded Melissa's words. "You can forget about leaving if you refuse to pay!"Every word they said was irrefutable evidence."You owe me 3.8 million dollars. That's quite a lot of money. On top of that, not only did you illegally detain me, but you also attempted to force me into prostitution. I have a feeling that you'll be

The color drained from Sasha's face. She averted her eyes and stammered, "M-My card was frozen. Dad's business hasn't been doing too well recently…"I couldn't help myself and burst into laughter. "You sure know how to pick them, Charlie. You wanted to find someone who could pay for all your expenses. Instead, you found someone who's saddled with debt."I pointed at Sasha's handbag and continued, "That's a high-quality counterfeit. It only costs 300 dollars. The rhinestones on her necklace are from a warehouse. They only cost 15 dollars a pound. As for her father, who's supposedly a coal mine owner…"I pulled out my phone and read aloud the information that my butler had just sent to me."Dominic Fitch is currently two million dollars in debt. In fact, his name is on the list of untrustworthy people. Sasha—or rather, Sarah Fitch, as per her full name. She's currently unemployed and specifically targets rich men in many dating circles. Is she the so-called heiress of a rich family t

"I-I had no idea that this hotel belonged to you," Charlie stammered. "If I had known—"The bodyguard aimed a kick at his knee, shouting, "Get on your knees if you want to speak to her!"Charlie let out a pained yelp as he sank to his knees. The sound of his kneecaps colliding against the ground was painful to listen to.I grabbed the booking confirmation and tore it to shreds without sparing a single glance at it."510 thousand dollars is far from enough to compensate me," I said while pointing at the carpet beneath my feet. The fish stew that Melissa had spilled earlier pooled on it, making it look extremely greasy. A large portion of the stew had also seeped into the wool."This carpet was woven by hand in Poslona. It was a vintage piece imported. There is only one like it in the entire hotel, and it's ruined now."I looked at Wes and asked, "How much did it cost?"Wes immediately pulled out a calculator and began rapidly tapping the buttons. "We first purchased it for 800 t

Charlie's smile stiffened in an instant.I accepted the handkerchief from Wes and slowly dabbed away the blood from the corner of my lips. I then wiped the back of my hands, which had been stained by the fish stew.I moved elegantly, as if I hadn't been trapped in a troublesome situation just a few minutes ago.Charlie's eyes looked like they were about to bulge out of their sockets. He stumbled over his words as he stuttered, "M-Ms. Rosewood? You must be mistaking her for someone else, Mr. Morton. She's just Lily Rosewood, a pauper who stays in a rented apartment and eats bread every day to survive."The clothes she's wearing probably aren't even worth two hundred dollars. Why are you treating her with such respect?"Wes immediately whipped around and slapped Charlie hard across his face. The slap was at least ten times more powerful than when Melissa slapped me earlier. The force of the blow sent Charlie spinning in place, and his cheek immediately began to swell."Shut up!" W

Charlie gleefully offered the payment terminal to me again."Are you going to pay by card?" he asked. "Oh, I have to remind you that this payment terminal doesn't accept credit cards. You have to use your debit card."It was obvious that Charlie was certain that I wouldn't be able to pay and wanted to see me embarrass myself.I ignored him and rummaged through the torn compartment of my bag, pulling out a black phone. It wasn't the usual smartphone that saturated the market. Instead, it was a satellite phone. It was thick and heavy, drop-proof, and had global signal coverage.Dad had specially ordered one for me in case I was abducted or got into an accident.I didn't expect to use it here of all places.Charlie's smile grew wider when he noticed the "vintage" phone that I was holding."Did you pick that up from the trash?" he asked. "Don't tell me that you're thinking of pawning that off to pay off your debt, Lily? Is it even worth 50 dollars?"Charlie's relatives burst into
