Lucien’s POV

Ashley flinched at the sound of my voice, her smirk slipping for half a second as she turned toward me. I didn’t wait for her to say a word. My steps were already loud against the marble, sharp and fast, cutting through the thick, choking tension between them. I reached them in seconds, eyes burning, hands clenched, blood humming with something I hadn’t let out in years.

I didn’t say anything at first.

I just walked straight to Natasha and pulled her gently by the arm, moving her behind me without a second thought. She didn’t resist. She looked up at me with wide eyes that still carried the sting of humiliation, confusion tightening the corners of her mouth. Her hands were trembling, not out of fear but restraint—like she had wanted to scream but swallowed it because she didn’t know if she was allowed.

Ashley stumbled as I stepped between them.

She wasn’t expecting the movement. Her heels twisted awkwardly and her hand flew to the side to balance herself against the wall, her mouth opening and closing like she couldn’t believe what just happened.

“How dare you lay your hands on her,” I said, my voice low, too calm for the rage pressing against my ribs.

Ashley straightened, brushing imaginary dust off her shoulder. She still had that look. That stupid look of someone who thought they still mattered.

“Why are you defending this maid?” she scoffed, her words like venom wrapped in velvet. “What is she to you, Lucien?”

She didn’t even finish the sentence.

My hand moved faster than my mind.

The sound of my palm meeting her cheek rang through the corridor. Sharp. Final.

Her head jerked sideways, red hair whipping across her face. The silence that followed was worse than the slap itself. She stood frozen for a second, one hand slowly lifting to press against her cheek. Her eyes didn’t rise to meet mine. Not this time.

I didn’t apologize.

I didn’t flinch.

“You will not speak to her that way,” I said, each word like a stone dropped in water, slow and heavy. “She is not your equal. She is not your servant. And she is definitely not your concern.”

Ashley turned toward me now, her mouth trembling, but not with regret—just pride. Just that bruised ego that couldn’t accept she’d been dismissed.

“So what is she then?” she spat. “You slap me over some… girl you picked from the dungeons?”

“Say one more word,” I warned.

She stopped.

And for the first time in years, Ashley Thorne listened.

I turned slightly and looked back at Natasha. Her eyes were still wide, her lips parted like she wasn’t sure whether to thank me or disappear. I reached for her hand—not forcefully, not as a command—but so she would know. So she would feel it. That she wasn’t invisible. That I saw her. That I had heard everything.

“Come with me!”

  • When My Mate Chose Another, the Lycan King Chose Me   18: Set up

Natasha’s POVEverything looked perfect on the outside. The lights. The glitter. The clinking of wine glasses. The soft music from the corner of the hall floated lazily around the chandeliers. Every flower was placed exactly where it should be. Every ribbon matched. Every smile was wide enough to pass. But something felt wrong.I stood in the middle of it all, dressed in silk I couldn’t afford in my past life, hair pinned like a crown I hadn’t earned, face painted to look like I belonged. And yet… I didn’t.People walked past me, murmuring their greetings. Their bows were shallow. Their eyes were quick to turn away. Their lips didn’t quite match the shape of their words. Even the compliments felt too polished, like glass held too tightly in the hand, waiting to cut.I smiled too. Because what else could I do?I kept turning my head, hoping to find Lucien’s eyes in the crowd, but he wasn’t there. Not anymore. I saw him when the party first started. He stood by the stairway, tall and qu

  • When My Mate Chose Another, the Lycan King Chose Me   17: Not me

Ashley’s POVI wasn’t going to come. Not after the slap. Not after he humiliated me in front of some nobody. Not after he looked at me like I was the dirt beneath his boots. I had packed my bags, had even zipped up the last suitcase and tossed my heels into the corner. But when the music started drifting in through the open windows, when I saw the lights blinking across the courtyard like stars had fallen to the earth, something in me shifted. Something old and ugly that refused to stay buried.I stood by the window for nearly half an hour, arms crossed, chewing on the edge of my lip while watching the maids scurry in their stiff white uniforms, watching the guests in rich colors and long cloaks pour into the ballroom. I told myself I wasn’t interested. That I didn’t care. That they could crown her Queen tonight for all I cared. But I still got dressed.I didn’t wear anything too loud. Nothing golden or red. That would be too obvious. Instead, I wore black. One shoulder bare, a slit d

  • When My Mate Chose Another, the Lycan King Chose Me   16: He's still your mate

Natasha's POVThe slap echoed in my ears long after the sound faded.I didn’t move. I couldn’t. My body was still frozen from the moment he stepped in front of me, from the way his voice had cracked through the air like thunder, from the fire in his eyes when he looked at Ashley. And then, the way he looked at me.Like I was worth something.Like I wasn’t just some girl in borrowed clothes standing in a hallway too grand for her shadow. For a second, something bloomed in my chest. I didn’t name it. Didn’t dare. But it was there. Quiet and warm. The feeling that maybe I wasn’t as invisible as I’d thought. Important maybe. "Come with me!"His voice pulled me back, sharp again. Still full of that same heat, but not the soft kind. Not the one I wanted to feel.I followed. His grip wasn’t tight, but it wasn’t gentle either. He didn’t look back once. Just stormed ahead, dragging me down two corridors and through a door I hadn’t noticed before. A study maybe. Or a waiting room. I didn’t hav

  • When My Mate Chose Another, the Lycan King Chose Me   14: Ashley!

Natasha’s POVThe sound of laughter echoed from the far end of the hallway. I stood still, just behind the tall glass doors that opened to the grand ballroom. It wasn’t fully dressed yet. The floors were being polished to a mirror shine, golden ribbons stretched across the arches, and the maids scurried in and out with arms full of flowers and trays. The room was filling with light and color, and... life. And it was all because of one thing.Me.I took another step forward, and my fingers brushed the carved wood of the doorway. I didn’t mean to linger, but I couldn’t move either. I just stood there, watching them hang more garlands, wheel in golden carts of wine, fix little crystals along the chandelier chains. My name was being whispered from one end to another. They called it a banquet. A welcome party. Something about formalities and honor and presenting me properly to the Kingdom.I couldn’t believe it.Was this all really for me?Me?I didn’t know how to feel. I wasn’t used to th

  • When My Mate Chose Another, the Lycan King Chose Me   Shouldn't be here

Lucien's POVThe garden was quiet. Not dead quiet—the trees still rustled, the petals still swayed, and the fountain still hummed its low, watery tune. But it was a different kind of quiet, one I hadn't noticed until it shifted. Something in the air shifted. Just slightly. Like the wind was holding its breath.I turned. Not because someone called me or because there was a sound—but because I felt it. That strange, unmistakable weight of being watched. Not danger. Not threat. Something else. Like a presence that didn’t want to be seen but couldn’t help looking. My eyes moved fast, scanning the path between the pillars, the archway beyond the hedges.Nothing.But she was there.I knew it.She had a way of moving through air without making sound. But her presence always rang loud in my senses. Like thunder in slow motion. Natasha. She had come to find me. And now she was leaving, even though I hadn't seen her. But I felt her leave. I felt it in the sudden absence. The quiet returned to b
