Natasha’s POV

Lucien had been acting strangely ever since we left the room upstairs. It wasn’t just the clipped way he spoke to me when the maid knocked, or the cold distance in his voice after I asked him to help zip my dress. It was in the way his eyes never quite met mine anymore, as though if he looked too long, something he didn’t want me to see would spill out. I felt it when he stormed into the bathroom, when I heard the sound against the wall and his voice claiming it was nothing. I still felt it now, hours or maybe only minutes later, as we descended the stairs to meet his parents.

By the time I reached the bottom, smoothing down my dress and gathering every ounce of composure left in me, he was already there. Standing tall. Kingly. Talking to them. His voice was calm, steady, almost unnervingly detached, as though the moment upstairs had never even happened. He didn’t glance back at me, didn’t check if I was following. He was just… gone, like I wasn’t even in his world anymo

  • When My Mate Chose Another, the Lycan King Chose Me   94: That wasn't nothing

Lucien’s POVThe room felt heavy. I could barely breathe. Natasha was right in front of me, so close I could feel her body heat. Her dress was shining under the light. I had my hands on her waist, holding her just enough to feel her shape. My heart was beating so fast I could hear it. She smelled nice, like flowers, but also a bit sweaty from all the dresses she had tried on. I just stood there, not moving, because if I did, I knew I would pull her even closer. Her lips were right there, a little open, and she was breathing hard. I kept staring at them. I couldn’t look away. I moved my thumb along her jaw, slow. She closed her eyes for a second, then opened them and looked at me. She looked unsure, but I could see she wanted it too. I leaned in, just a bit, and I could feel her breath on my lips. We were so close.“Knock. Knock.”The knock made Natasha jump. She pulled away from me so fast I almost lost my balance. My hands dropped. I could still feel where she had been. She stepped b

  • When My Mate Chose Another, the Lycan King Chose Me   93: On my lips

Natasha’s POVThe pile of dresses was starting to look like a mountain beside me, yet he still sat there, calm as stone, his eyes trailing after me with that same unreadable intensity that made my skin prickle. It wasn’t the look of someone waiting for a show. No—it was sharper than that, heavier, like he was trying to peel away every layer of me with his gaze alone.I had tried on nearly fifteen outfits—fifteen—and each time I stepped out of the dressing corner, smoothing down the fabric, waiting, hoping for even the smallest flicker of change in his expression, I got the same thing. That steady gaze. That same single word.“Next.”The fact that he loved them all yet still called for next got to be the most annoying part.At first, it had been amusing. I’d even rolled my eyes at him once, muttering something under my breath that I was sure he caught, because the corner of his mouth had twitched almost into a smile. Then, after the sixth or seventh dress, frustration had kicked in. No

  • When My Mate Chose Another, the Lycan King Chose Me   92: It was her

Lucien’s POVThe moment she pushed open the door, I felt her hesitation before I saw it. Her hand lingered on the frame, her steps careful, as though she was sneaking into forbidden territory instead of entering the chamber that belonged to her just as much as it did to me. My eyes lifted from the floor to her, and that was when I caught sight of the way she clutched her robe—too tightly, like it was the only thing holding her together. And then, as the lamplight shifted, I noticed the lace peeking from beneath the silk. It took everything in me not to laugh—not at her, but at the sheer bravery wrapped inside her nervousness. She thought she hid it well, the way her gaze clung to me, dragging over my chest and stomach as though she couldn’t stop herself. But I saw it. Every flicker in her eyes, every stagger of her breath. She was trying so hard to appear confident, but her pulse betrayed her, racing so fast I could hear it from where I sat.And Saints, if she only knew how close I c

  • When My Mate Chose Another, the Lycan King Chose Me   91: So soon?

Natasha’s POVI stood before the door, robe wrapped tightly around me, my palms damp as though the fabric itself could sense my nervousness. Every step I had taken down the hallway had been heavy, dragging my fear and my hope together in a messy knot inside my chest. My head was held high because I forced it to be, because I wouldn’t allow myself to look defeated before even trying. But my stomach was churning so violently that I thought at any moment I might throw up right there in front of the King’s chamber.I raised my hand and pushed the door open slowly, quietly, as if the wood itself might betray me. The room was dimly lit. The air felt thick, heavy, scented faintly with pine and something darker, muskier—his scent, clinging everywhere like it had claimed the space long before me. My breath caught, and before my mind could even find balance, my eyes found him.The King.He wasn’t clothed the way I had feared or hoped. No, he was in just his pants, the strength of his body revea

  • When My Mate Chose Another, the Lycan King Chose Me   90: Come Over

Natasha’s POV“So, any update yet?”Her voice crackled through the phone, impatient and sharp.I was lying across the bed, one arm tucked under my head, the other holding the phone close to my ear. I frowned at the ceiling, confused at the sudden rush in her tone. “About what?” I asked slowly. There was silence for a second, the kind that wasn’t empty but heavy with disbelief. Then Lani exhaled so hard into the receiver I pulled the phone slightly away from my ear. “Are you seriously asking me that?” she snapped.“Yes?” I muttered, still not catching up.“Natasha,” she said my name with the kind of irritation only she could carry. “Has he screwed you yet? Are you carrying a child? Has anything happened between you two at all? Just give me an update before I lose my damn mind.”I choked on my own breath, eyes widening, and for a moment I was too stunned to say anything. Then it hit me, the ridiculousness of her bluntness, the raw impatience in her voice, and I burst out laughing. The s
