Chapter 1

Author: Daphne
For three years, I was Julian Mercer’s trophy girlfriend.

That’s what everyone in New York high society said.

No job, no social life. My favorite hobbies were sleeping in and then taking his black card to Fifth Avenue to buy things I didn’t need. Even his own sister, Sophia, said I probably wouldn’t last a week without the Mercer family.

I never argued.

After all, three years ago, I was the controlling shareholder and chief investment officer of North Shore Capital. I worked 18 hours a day and was still watching overseas markets at two in the morning. Eventually I passed out cold in a conference room. When I woke up, I had an IV in the back of my hand, and the doctor asked if I planned to keep going until I died at my desk.

So I stopped.

I handed day-to-day management over to Margaret Hale, kept my controlling stake, and only showed up when something required my signature.

Then I met Julian.

He knew I used to work in finance, but he never asked how much money I’d made or why I’d quit. The first time he saw me use his card, all he asked was, “You like it?”

I said I did.

He said, “Then buy it.”

That was the moment I decided to stay.

The afternoon everything fell apart, I was on Fifth Avenue trying on a limited-edition handbag that had just arrived in New York.

The sales associate, Chloe Bennett, wore white gloves as she handed it to me. I looked it over, then set Julian’s black card on the counter.

The card reader beeped.

Declined.

I stared at the screen for three seconds.

“Run it again.”

Declined again.

Chloe kept smiling, but she was clearly moving slower now.

I was about to call Julian when a breaking financial news alert flashed across the giant screen outside the store.

Mercer Group stock was in free fall.

A short seller had put out a report accusing the company of concealing debt and related-party transactions. Several banks had frozen its credit lines at once. Richard Mercer had resigned as chairman, and Julian’s older brothers, Alex and Daniel Mercer, were under investigation over an international money transfer.

I called Julian three times.

No answer.

That wasn’t like him.

In three years, whether he was in a board meeting or on a plane, he’d always picked up before the third ring.

I put the bag back and went home to the Mercer house empty-handed.

The living room was chaos.

Lawyers, bank advisers, and company executives filled nearly the whole floor. Julian’s mother, Helen Mercer, was red-eyed, and his father, Richard, sat on the couch looking like he’d aged ten years overnight.

When Sophia saw me, all the anger she’d bottled up that afternoon finally had somewhere to go.

“Elena, where have you been?”

“Shopping for a bag.”

She stared at my empty hands and let out a furious laugh.

“The company’s about to go under, and you’re out buying bags?”

“I didn’t get it,” I said, handing my coat to one of the staff. “The card got declined.”

“You—”

“Sophia.”

Julian’s voice came from the doorway.

When he walked in, his tie was already loose, the sleeves of his white shirt were rolled up to his elbows, and there were deep shadows under his eyes.

He looked me over first.

“Did anyone give you trouble?”

I shook my head.

“I just didn’t get my bag.”

Sophia looked like she was about to cry with rage.

“Julian! Are you even listening to what she’s saying?”

Julian ignored her, pulled another card out of his wallet, and handed it to me.

“Use this one.”

I took it.

“What’s the limit?”

“Five million dollars.”

I frowned.

Julian saw my face and actually smiled.

“You’ll have to make do for a few days.”

Sophia turned and stormed off.

Nobody in the Mercer house ate dinner that night.

Except me.

I ate the dinner the chef had prepared, all by myself. When I went upstairs at one in the morning, the light in the study was still on.

The door was open a crack, and I heard a lawyer say, “If we don’t secure additional funding by tomorrow morning, the lenders could call in their loans. The flagship hotels, the commercial real estate, all of it will have to be sold.”

Julian was quiet for a long time.

“Sell my personal investments.”

“That still won’t be enough.”

“Sell them anyway.”

A few more seconds passed.

“And get the plane ready.”

I pushed the door open.

“Where are you going?”

Julian turned around. His brow twitched when he saw me.

“Not me.”

He picked up an envelope from the desk. Inside were my passport, a plane ticket, and the deed to an apartment overseas.

“Get out of New York by tomorrow.”

I looked up at him.

“You’re kicking me out?”

“No.”

“Then what is this?”

He stepped closer and pulled my robe closed at the neck.

“Just listen to me this once.

“Go. For now.”

Six months later, the Mercer Group had fully emerged from the crisis. Its stock price didn’t stage a miraculous comeback. It just climbed steadily back to a reasonable range.Julian was the happiest about that.He said keeping the company alive mattered more than having a good story to tell.Same with North Shore Capital.I never went back to being chief investment officer. The chairwoman’s office sat empty half the time. But whenever I actually needed to make a decision, I showed up.One afternoon, I wrapped up the quarterly meeting at three.Margaret glanced at the time.“Leaving this early today?”“Julian’s taking me to dinner.”“Isn’t there a family dinner tonight?”“We’re going shopping first.”She smiled and shook her head. The moment I walked out of the building, I saw Julian leaning against the car.He opened the door for me.“Where to?”“Fifth Avenue.”“Another bag?”“Got a problem with that?”“Nope.”He got in and handed me his wallet.“The card’s in there.”I took it out and

In the first month after the wedding, I went into the North Shore Capital office only six days.Margaret had stopped trying to talk me into more meetings. She’d learned to bring me all the decisions that actually required my input at once and let the existing systems handle the rest. That was a lot easier than the old days, when I controlled everything myself. One day, I wrapped up a meeting early. When the elevator reached the lobby, I saw Julian’s car parked right out front.I got in.“What are you doing here?”“Picking you up from work.”“I have a driver.”“I know.”“Then why’d you come?”“Because I want to.”That answer sounded familiar. It was the same thing he’d said three years ago when he gave me my first black card.I’d asked why. He’d answered, “Because I want to.”When we got home that night, Sophia was in our living room unwrapping presents.“You’re here again?”“Mom asked me to drop something off.”“So why are you still here?”“You’re my sister-in-law now. Do I need permis

The wedding was held at the Mercer Group’s newly reopened flagship hotel. The whole top floor and the terrace were reserved for family and friends.People from North Shore Capital came.So did the Mercer Group’s executives. The people who’d given statements during the investigation sat in the back rows.Nobody needed to apologize for anything that day.All the old scores had already been settled.Helen slipped the emerald ring onto my finger herself. When Richard gave his toast, he didn’t say I’d saved the Mercer family.Instead, he said, “Thank you, Elena, for choosing to come back that day, when you could have just walked away.”Standing next to Julian, I suddenly realized those words meant more to me than any compliment.Alex and Daniel were in charge of keeping an eye on Sophia, and with good reason. She’d already snuck over to my gift table to check out my new bag.“Put it down.”I called to her from across the room. She turned around.“I’m just looking!”“Where’s your own?”“Mine

A week before the wedding, Sophia and I went back to Fifth Avenue. The same store.Chloe recognized me right away and was so eager to help she seemed almost nervous.“Ms. Bell, the brand has a gift for you.”She had someone bring out a new bag that had just arrived in New York.I really did love it.“How much?”Chloe smiled even more politely.“There’s no charge. The brand is hoping you’ll attend their event next season.”I put the bag back.“No, thanks.”She froze.Sophia was used to this by now.“She doesn’t do free.”Chloe looked a little lost.“Why not?”I handed over Julian’s new black card.“Free is no fun.”The card reader gave a bright little chime.Approved.When I heard it, I couldn’t help smiling.Back when all this started, I’d been standing right here.Back then, the screen had said declined. That was the first time I realized Julian might really go broke. Now, I could easily have paid for it myself. But I still wanted to use his card. The difference wasn’t money. It was k

After we got engaged, I officially resumed my duties as chairwoman of North Shore Capital. Two days of meetings a week. The rest of the time, I stayed away.In the very first month, someone asked if I’d “lost my ambition.”I finished reading the article and closed the page.Three years ago, I would have explained myself. Now I couldn’t be bothered.Margaret, on the other hand, was very pleased.“You’re so much easier to manage than you used to be.”“Did you forget who owns the controlling stake?”“I remember.”“And you still say things like that?”“Because now you actually go home at the end of the day.”I had to admit she had a point.Things were getting back to normal on Julian’s end too.The Mercer Group finished paying down its debt, and the reforms to make its board more independent officially took effect.Alex and Daniel went back to running their own parts of the business.Sophia started working on a hotel branding project and got too busy to bug me every day. There was only one

A month later, Sophia suddenly said she wanted to take me to the Mercer Group’s flagship hotel.“What for?”“To see the renovation.”“Why would I want to see a renovation?”“Don’t you have great taste?”“I have expensive taste.”“Even better.”She shoved me into the car.The car stopped at the hotel’s back entrance. The elevator went straight to the top floor. The second the doors opened, I knew she’d been lying to me.The entire top-floor ballroom had been redecorated.White flowers lined the way from the entrance to the terrace. There were dozens of antique candelabras.Beyond them, Manhattan was lit up for the night. Before the crisis, the Mercer family had planned to throw a gala for the company’s anniversary. Then it was all called off.Now the gala was back on.And it was even more over the top than they’d originally planned.I walked over to the gift table. The first thing I saw was that bag.The one I didn’t get to buy back when all this started.“Who paid for it?” I asked.Sop
