Chapter 3

Author: Bagel
Logan returned quickly.

Such was the speed of an Alpha. When he cared, a few miles was nothing more than a few heartbeats.

But he didn't rush back because he was worried about me.

He came back because he thought I had severed the mind-link.

For a pathologically controlling Alpha, a mate blocking their mental connection on her own was nothing short of a profound humiliation.

He didn't even glance at the small, pitiful suitcase at my feet.

He strode over, carrying the scent of Chloe on him.

"Sienna, baby," his thumb caressed my chin. "Why did you suddenly block the mind-link? My wolf can't feel you. He's pacing restlessly inside me."

I turned my head, avoiding his touch. "I want to be alone."

Logan's hand fell empty. He froze for a moment, then smoothly wrapped his arm around my shoulder.

"Still angry about that photo?"

"Sienna, you know Chloe is just my secretary, and she's a valued member of the pack who works hard. As the Alpha, it's my duty to train my subordinates in combat."

"The pack elders are already prejudiced against you because of your origins," he sighed, his warm breath fanning across my neck. "Don't get jealous over something so trivial. It makes you look insecure, hmm?"

Hearing this, my stomach churned, yet I couldn't help but want to laugh.

This was how Logan had controlled me for years, always handing me a knife wrapped in the sweetest candy.

He would watch me swallow it and still expect me to be grateful.

"Insecure?" I took a step back, breaking free from his hold. "It seems our Alpha is truly busy. So busy he doesn't even realize his secretary is parading around the pack like its Luna."

The smile on Logan's face stiffened. "Sienna, when did you become so sensitive?"

"It's not easy for a young she-wolf like Chloe to make her way in a pack like this. You're the Luna. You should be more understanding, not listen to gossip. The last time you threw a fit at the council hall over the seal, Chloe cried all night, and she was still defending you."

He looked at me with a reproachful gaze, as if I were the ungrateful sinner.

"I provide you with the best life, isn't that so you can be carefree? If you keep targeting Chloe like this, I'll be disappointed."

"Besides, your wolf is so weak. Extreme emotional fluctuations aren't good for it."

"Sienna, listen to me. You don't need to think so much. Just listen to Chloe's arrangements and focus on healing your wolf first."

I finally couldn't help but laugh out loud.

But the laughter held no emotion.

Right in front of Logan, I yanked open the zipper of the suitcase at my feet.

"Carefree? The best life?"

"Logan, is this your love for me?"

The suitcase lay open, completely empty inside.

There were only a few T-shirts, washed so many times they were faded and their collars were stretched out.

They were old clothes I had brought with me three years ago when he first marked me.

"I'm leaving, and I can't even find five decent pieces of clothing to wear out the door."

"In this so-called golden cage, I have to fill out a request form to get a haircut. I have to wait until your good secretary is in a good mood to get a stamp for a single tube of lipstick. Even the maids in this house get more cash in hand each month than your Luna!"

Logan frowned. "Sienna, don't exaggerate..."

I ignored him, grabbing the sleeve of his expensive, tailored suit and dragging him to the closed door of the storage room.

I pointed to the flashing red light of the electronic lock.

"Go on, my devoted Alpha. You tell me how to open this lock."

"You need a password, a fingerprint, and finally, remote authorization from our long-suffering Chloe!"

"What kind of cherished Luna is forced to live like a beggar, pleading at the feet of her husband's secretary!"

Logan stared at the electronic lock, his face a mask of bewilderment.

He turned his head, looking at me in disbelief. "This is what it's about?"

"Baby, are you making this huge scene, even threatening to leave, just because you think getting money is inconvenient? Or... are you simply jealous that Chloe has so much authority?"

Hearing those words, my heart went completely cold.

All my anger and grief were, in his eyes, nothing more than the tantrum of a petty, materialistic mate.

I let go of his sleeve and took two steps back, my gaze empty. "Forget it, Logan. It doesn't matter what you think anymore."

"Let's sever the mate bond."

We stood in silence for a moment, with no further goodbyes.Just like that, I pulled my hand free and turned to leave. The shelter quickly accepted the donations. The director was sincerely grateful, asking no questions about their origin or my motive. The property transfer was also completed quickly.I had no interest in finding out who received these things.I knew very well that the Sienna of today had made a complete break with the past.In the years that followed, I threw myself into my biological research, determined to make up for lost time.I published a paper on Rogue gene repair that sent shockwaves through the werewolf academic community. Before I knew it, I had become a mentor myself, able to supervise doctoral students.Professor Miles tapped my desk, his expression stern but fond. "Choose your students well.""I'm too old to manage my grand-students on top of managing you."We both laughed.Just then, an urgent call from the pack hospital interrupted us.They said Logan h

Logan gave me a massive settlement.A fortune large enough to buy half the pack's territory, plus the luxurious villa that had witnessed our three-year mate bond.I went back once. Nothing in the villa had been moved. In the walk-in closet, the couture gowns and jewelry I once had no right to touch, which I had to beg for like a beggar, now lay there quietly. The password to the safe had been changed to my birthday.I spent two days donating all of it, the dresses, the jewelry, and even the house, to a shelter for Rogues and abandoned Omegas. My phone vibrated. It was a text message."Sienna, why did you sell all those things?""Was it not enough money? I can give you more."I blocked the number immediately. As dusk fell, the doorbell suddenly rang.Logan's Beta was at the door.He was holding the deed to a piece of pack territory. He stammered slightly, "The Alpha said the assets in the rejection agreement were insufficient. He sent me to give you this deed as additional compensation.

It wasn't that I hadn't argued with Logan about it back then. But no matter how much I protested, all I ever got was his dismissive reply:"Sienna, can't you stop being so petty? It's just a little spring water.""You're the Luna, and she's a hero who has given her all for the pack. What's wrong with me rewarding her?""Look at you now. If the elders knew you lacked even this much magnanimity, how would that reflect on you?"Under his constant "it's for your own good" gaslighting, I swallowed all my weakness and grievances, forcing myself to obey.Thinking about it used to fill me with a sense of injustice. Now, remembering it, I found it almost laughable. To think I had once been so meek. For a moment, Logan froze, a look of panic and confusion on his face."I'm sorry... I misremembered. Sienna, what do you like, then?""Just tell me. I'll pluck the stars from the sky for you if you want."I checked the equipment I would need for the day and said coldly, "There's no need."But Logan w

He still didn't get it. He had no idea why I was so disappointed in him.He truly believed that as long as the prize he offered was big enough, I was supposed to accept it gratefully."That's enough, Logan," I cut him off."We're over. I don't need anything. The only gift I want when I return from this expedition is the rejection papers, signed by you."In an instant, his face was a mask of bewildered pain.He couldn't understand why, after he had humbled himself so much, even punishing his most capable pack member for my sake, I remained so cold-hearted."Sienna, I never thought about severing our bond. You are my Mate, a gift from the Moon Goddess.""What will it take for you to forgive me?"Communicating with this self-righteous Alpha was exhausting. My patience finally ran out, and my voice turned sharp."Logan, you're always so arrogant.""Whoever catches your eye is expected to be eternally grateful, and whoever you grow tired of is supposed to just quietly disappear.""You thoug

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"Logan's voice shook with disbelief as it trembled through the mind-link.The healer's voice was thick with fear, his words barely a whisper."Alpha, I tried to contact you then, but you cut the link, leaving only one sentence.""'Don't bother me with some Omega's trivial problem. I'm celebrating with Chloe.'"In that instant, an image of that night flashed through Logan's mind. The pack had just secured a major project. He was popping champagne in the penthouse ballroom, Chloe in a red gown on his arm, the entire pack cheering. To avoid having his mood ruined, he had blocked her messages and all the red alerts from the medical center. He had even ordered her mind-link to be severed to appease Chloe, who had been "upset" by her outburst.A wave of dizziness washed over him, and a dull ache throbbed in his head. Why had the normally docile Sienna suddenly caused a scene at the council hall? She had said something about Chloe deliberately blocking the approval

I turned around to see Chloe, decked out in designer outdoor gear but teetering on a pair of ridiculously inappropriate high-heeled hiking boots. She pinched her nose, her eyes sweeping over me and my colleagues with disgust."The Alpha told me you'd run off. I was wondering where you'd disappeared to. Turns out you're back to slumming it with these filthy, lowly Omegas."With Logan not around, she quickly dropped her pretense. The sliver of respect she once showed me was now completely gone.My face hardened. We had just returned from the swamp and were covered in mud, but this mud felt nobler than her perfumed vulgarity."What rock did you crawl out from under, Chloe? You reek of something rotten."Chloe's face flushed red. Just as she was about to lash out, a tall, imposing figure stepped out of the SUV behind her."What's going on?"Hearing that familiar voice, Chloe's eyes immediately welled up. Her body went limp as she leaned against the man, her voice was so pitiful, thick with
