Chapter 3 Jealousy Under Surveillance

Author: Bright Lights
"It doesn't matter whether you like me. You'll never be able to escape me as long as I still like you."

Unfortunately, Cassian had no sense of romance as he either ignored me completely or rejected me outright. He was so decisive about it that there wasn't even the slightest room for misinterpretation.

Eventually, I became thoroughly annoyed after being turned down so many times.

"So, you're going to play cold and distant and ignore me, huh? Fine."

Hence, I abused my position as his secretary and quietly installed 138 surveillance cameras in Cassian's villa.

All those cameras were very much necessary for full coverage. It was perfect.

After all, I wanted to see whether he was still this aloof even in private.

I spent every night glued to the monitors for an entire month, indulging in my one-sided virtual obsession with Cassian. I immersed myself in watching him. Through the screens, it felt as though he was my personal, exclusive heartthrob.

So, it was no surprise that I found myself falling deeper for him the longer I observed him.

Yet, the more I watched him move about, the more something felt… off.

Cassian often sat alone at his desk at night, holding a small photograph in his hand. He would run his fingers over it again and again. If that weren't enough, his gaze would soften to an almost absurd degree.

He was looking at that picture with a tenderness I had never seen before.

'Alright. Odds are, he has a crush.'

The monster named jealousy immediately reared its ugly head within me. I yanked at my hair, desperate to see who was in that photo. Alas, I hadn't had the forethought to place a camera directly facing his desk when I had installed the cameras.

After all, my endgame wasn't to steal confidential documents.

Now, it was biting me in the ass because no matter how hard I stared, I could only make out the vague outline of a woman.

I was simmering in frustration and nearly losing my mind with jealousy when my work phone suddenly rang. The caller ID showed Cassian. So, I had no choice but to suppress all my emotions into a neat little box and switch back into my cool, professional secretary persona.

"Mr. Knox."

I heard him say calmly on the other end of the phone.

He was methodically going over work matters with such impressive detached efficiency. Yet, I could see everything clearly through the monitors. Although he was talking shop with me, he was still absentmindedly stroking that photograph with an unbearably gentle look on his face.

The contrast between the way he was treating the mystery woman and me was so sharp that it made my jealousy bubble up further. At this rate, my cauldron was about to boil over.

My chest tightened painfully. I was so distracted and irritated that I jerked to my feet to grab my work laptop and ended up accidentally knocking my knee against the sofa, letting out a small cry.

Cassian's voice cut off mid-sentence. The next second, there was a knock from my neighbor.

"Don't you know I have a kid? Keep it down if you're having a nightlife!"

After my neighbor left, Cassian's voice came through again, slightly hoarse. "Ms. Rhodes, are you alright?"

I forced myself to sound calm. "I'm fine. I just bumped into something."

"Mm." He didn't press further. "Forget it. We'll deal with work tomorrow. Get some rest."

He hung up right after that.

I checked the monitors again in confusion, not knowing why he'd reacted so weirdly. I found Cassian silently sitting in front of his desk for half a minute before suddenly getting up and heading to the bathroom.

'What's going on with him? That's one weird quirk, stopping halfway through work to take a shower.'

I became thoroughly irritated between him hanging up on me and discovering that he had a crush. So, I immediately switched to my burner account and resumed aggressively harassing Cassian. But halfway through, I had to stop to deal with a nosebleed.

On the monitor, Cassian had just finished his shower. His damp hair dripped with water. His physique was smooth and well-defined. His broad shoulders and a narrow waist were a feast to my eyes. After all, the only thing he was wearing was a towel hanging loosely around his hips.

'Dude, you can't tempt a psychopath like that!'

My eyes lit up as my fingers flew across the screen, frantically taking screenshots.

I completely forgot he had a crush after that.

That night, I fell asleep with a silly smile on my lips and my phone in my arms.

My good mood lasted all the way into the next day, when I accompanied Cassian to a business meeting.

We were inside the car when Cassian glanced at the smile I couldn't quite suppress, his expression tightening inexplicably. "You seem to be in a very good mood, Ms. Rhodes. Have you fallen in love?"

I quickly realized that I'd let my mask slip a little too much. So, I instantly wiped the smile from my face, my usual poker face sliding into place in nary a second. "Please don't pull my leg, Mr. Knox."

He was more rational and clearheaded than almost anyone else, but he also craved love more desperately than anyone. After he came of age, he had voluntarily sought out a psychologist and confessed the problems he recognized within himself. After the doctor listened to his story, he had gently suggested, "Try placing your emotional attachment in the family you've built or will build for yourself in the future. Perhaps that will gradually heal the emptiness inside you."A family of his own? At the time, Cassian had found the idea both absurd and laughable. After all, no one understood his nature be

Cassian went from utter shock to slowly closing his eyes, surrendering himself to the kiss.Only when we had both run out of breath did I tilt my head away and finally let him go.His chest rose and fell heavily. His eyes had grown misty because of the kiss. However, he never looked away from me. "Are you… taking pity on me?" he asked, his voice hoarse. It seemed that he no longer believed he deserved anyone's love after being publicly rejected by his father. To him, every bit of affection that came his way now felt like charity. My heart softened as I looked at the loneliness and vulnerability on his face."No."It was only one word, yet it carried unwavering certainty.Cassian nodded, but it was obvious he didn't believe me. Instead, he apologized. "What I did… locking you up… was wrong. I hurt you. I'm sorry. You can leave now. For good if that's what you want. If you want to resign because of this, I'll give you four times the statutory severance package, plus a fully paid

I slapped him across the face.It wasn't hard. Honestly, it was more teasing than anything, but it seemed to snap Cassian back to his senses. I lost control."Then, he avoided my eyes, stood up, and practically fled in total embarrassment.I stared at the tightly shut door, and all I felt was regret.'Damn it, I overdid it!'I'd only wanted to play hard to get and watch him lose control. Alas, I'd scared him away instead. Oh, how I wished I could turn back time and take that slap back.I had assumed that, with how obsessed Cassian was with me, he'd spend one awkward night sorting out his emotions before coming to see me again the next day. Cassian smiled now that I had finally made a request from him, a flicker of light flashing across his eyes. "You're finally asking me for something."Then, he frowned slightly, sounding a little dissatisfied. "You can take a bath, but you'll have to call me something else."I feigned awkwardness as I spoke the name I'd already whispered to myself countless times. "Cassian…"His eyes lit up with joy the instant his name fell from my lips. "Good girl."Then, he reached down and unlocked the chain around my ankle. The cold metal slipped away, and I was finally free. His fingertips gently brushed over the faint red marks the shackles had left on my skin. "You can bathe, but don't even think about running away. I'm not letting you go."I nodded obediently and meekly.'Run away? I came here with no intention of leaving!'I wandered into the bathroom and deliberately took my time.…Once I figured enough time had passed, I turned off the shower and casually wrapped a towel loosely a

Fortunately for him, I had no intention of leaving.Instead, I settled comfortably onto the bed and began taking a proper look around the room that had become my prison. In the past, it had never occurred to me that I might be Cassian's crush. I'd watched every corner of this villa through the security cameras countless times, but nothing had ever stood out to me. Now that I looked closely, it suddenly became obvious that this had been going on for quite a while. After all, everything in this room had been designed according to my tastes. The walls were painted my favorite light beige. The curtains were the luxury sheer drapes that had been sitting in my online wishlist forever. Even the bedding he'd used for this room was the soft cotton fabric I'd favored for years. The diffuser on the nightstand was the same niche fragrance I'd casually mentioned on social media once, saying it smelled wonderful.Every single detail matched my preferences to a T.A surge of warm satisfactio

Soft morning light settled across Cassian's shoulders, making his already striking features even more breathtaking. Yet, there was no hiding the unmistakable possessiveness in his eyes behind all the beauty. The look he was giving me was so intense that it felt almost predatory. Before I could continue giving him my Oscar-worthy attempt at being terrified, he had already walked over to me. Then, he bent down and gently drew me into his arms. His warm breath brushed over my hair as he slowly stroked my back, soothing me patiently. "Don't be afraid, baby. I won't hurt you."I greedily breathed in his scent, but deliberately tensed my shoulders, feigning fear."I've liked you for a long time." His chin rested lightly against the top of my head, his voice practically dripping with tenderness. "I fell for you ever since the first time you held one of my finance magazines and told me with utmost sincerity that I was your role model."I watched you stay cold and distant with everyone el
