Chapter 2

작가: Glamour Pig
I took the initiative and dialed Amelia’s phone number.

The call connected.

“Amelia, we’ve already gotten div—”

“Sorry, I’m not her.”

It was Austin.

“And you are?”

“Amelia’s friend.”

I fell silent for a few seconds.

“Is there something you need her for? She was packing her luggage all night yesterday and didn’t get any sleep.

“If it’s anything important, you can just tell me.”

A bitter laugh escaped my lips.

Just as I was about to hang up, Amelia’s voice came through from the other end.

“Who is it?”

“It seems to be... your husband.”

Amelia took the phone. “Nicholas, is something wrong?”

“Who is he?”

There was a long silence on the line.

“A friend.”

“Just a friend?”

“Just a friend. Don’t overthink it.”

“Are you coming back together?”

“Yeah. He’s not in good health, and since I’m a doctor, I can look after him a bit more.”

The sound of an airport announcement echoed in the background.

“Oh, by the way, don’t you like flowers?” she added. “I brought back some small flower saplings for you.”

Without waiting for a response, she hung up the phone.

I walked over to the balcony.

The flowerpots sat on the plant stand, their soil dry and cracked.

A gentle breeze blew past, kicking up dust.

This soil was long past being fit for planting anything.

My phone screen lit up with a message from Amelia. It was just three words:

“Boarding. Don’t disturb.”

She had sent messages like this three hundred and fifty-six times before.

Every time she didn’t feel like dealing with me, she would send those exact same words.

It was like that when Austin had his surgery, and it was still like that today.

I murmured softly to myself, “There won’t be a next time.”

At ten o’clock in the morning, Amelia returned.

She had cut her hair short. Though there were faint dark circles under her eyes, her overall aura had grown softer and gentler.

I stood frozen for a few seconds.

She let out a soft chuckle and slipped naturally into my arms.

“It’s only been three years—did you forget what I look like already?”

“Yeah.”

She nuzzled her face against my chest. “You’re such a heartless man... After I went through all the trouble of bringing you flower saplings, too.”

It was a single straight stem with a few scattered green leaves—not a flower in sight.

Clatter!

I looked toward the sound.

A white medicine bottle had fallen and was rolling across the floor.

Omeprazole—medication for stomach issues.

“Is it yours?”

“No, it’s... Austin’s.”

“Your friend?”

“Yeah.”

“Is he sick?”

“Yeah, a very serious illness. When the pain flares up, he can’t swallow a thing.”

“Why do you have his medicine on you?”

“I must have grabbed the wrong bottle.”

She was lying again.

Amelia took my hand and pulled me toward the balcony.

“Let’s not talk about that. Let me help you plant these flowers.”

Looking at the cracked, parched soil, she froze for a moment.

“It’s fine. I’ll ask Austin to bring over some fresh soil later.”

“Is your mother feeling better?”

“...She’s mostly recovered.”

“When are you free? You should take me over to visit her.”

Her grip on the sapling tightened slightly.

“Next time.”

Once again, she lied.

I didn’t say another word.

At eight o’clock in the evening, I received a call from the nursing home.

It was Amelia’s grandmother, Alessia.

After dinner, Amelia had said she was going out for a walk and hadn’t come home yet.

“Nicholas, Amelia left her phone here. Come over and pick it up.”

“Did she just go to visit you?”

“Yes, and she brought a friend with her, too.”

“Austin?”

“Yes.”

“Do you know him?”

“I knew him even before I met you. I practically watched that boy grow up.”

“Do you like him?”

“Of course I do! Anyone my granddaughter likes, I like.”

My throat tightened, and my adam’s apple bobbed.

“Alessia, since you like him so much, how about having him visit you often from now on?”

“No way!”

I froze for a second.

“Amelia wouldn’t have the heart to let him suffer! All those dirty, exhausting chores still have to be done by you.”

It felt as though something had lodged in my throat, choking the words right out of me.

Yet she was Amelia’s grandmother, not mine.

In our three years of marriage, I had taken care of her grandmother for all three years.

When she lay in bed unable to move, I was the one cleaning up after her and attending to her basic needs.

When she was bedridden and taking medicine, I was the one running around serving her hand and foot.

The fact that she could hold a coherent conversation now was all thanks to my painstaking efforts.

I had once called Amelia, begging her to come back.

She had simply replied, “Don’t I have you there?”

With that single sentence, I had treated her grandmother as if she were my own flesh and blood.

Later, when Alessia moved into a nursing home, Amelia had specifically called to interrogate and scold me for it.

Three years of selfless devotion, only to be met with the excuse that Amelia “couldn’t bear to let Austin suffer.”

“Alessia, it’s getting late. You should get some sleep.”

“Alright. Tomorrow’s my birthday—remember to tell Austin to come over for dinner, too.”

After hanging up, silence settled over the apartment once again.

At ten o’clock at night, Amelia finally returned home.

“Alessia said you left your phone at her place.”

Her movements as she changed her shoes came to a sudden halt.

“You already know?”

“Why did he go with you?”

“Don’t misunderstand. He was worried about Grandma, so I brought him along to visit her.”

“You brought him, but you didn’t bring me?”

“Don’t you see her all the time?”

“It’s different.”

She looked at me in surprise. “What’s so different about it?”

“The meaning is different.”

I was the one who voluntarily showed up on her doorstep.

He was the one Amelia personally chose to bring along.

They were completely different.

“Fine, fine... Let me off the hook, okay? We won’t argue anymore. From now on, everything will be done your way.”

Her face was full of compromise, acting as though I held all the authority.

In our three years of living apart, this was the phrase she had used most often with me.

Whatever needed to be bought for the house—I should decide.

Alessia’s medical condition—I should handle it.

Even the wedding ring that never made it onto her finger—I was left to deal with it on my own.

Late one night, my phone rang.It was Amelia.“Honey, who is it?”“Amelia,” I answered softly.Isabella paused for a moment. “Answer it. Maybe it’s something urgent.”I picked up the call.“Nicholas…”“It’s me. Is something wrong?”“Nicholas... I’m so tired,” her voice was hoarse, sounding like someone who hadn’t spoken in a very long time.Isabella opened Austin’s video feed on her phone. In the video, Austin was flying into a rage once again, holding a knife against his own neck to threaten Amelia. The background was their former home in Seabrook—now completely wrecked and littered with broken clutter, clearly the aftermath of a violent struggle.“Nicholas... I regret everything.”“It’s too late,” I said calmly. “Go get some sleep.”“Nicholas... when I left you three years ago, it wasn’t because I loved Austin. I was just unwilling to let go of the past. I wanted him to see how good I was... but I was wrong. I never imagined I would lose you.”“It’s all in the past now

After leaving my place, Amelia didn’t go back home.Instead, she went straight to Seabrook.Because Austin was still there.Later on, the vlog that Austin had left inactive for three years finally resumed its updates. And she never came to see me again.Six months later, my father arranged a blind date for me.The meeting took place at a local coffee shop. When I arrived, my date was already seated at the table.“Hello, my name is Isabella Claire Harrington,” she introduced herself with a warm smile.“I’m—”“Nicholas. Nicholas Bennett.”“Did my dad tell you my name beforehand?”She shook her head. “Don’t misunderstand—your father didn’t tell me anything. I recognized you the moment I saw you.”“Because of... the videos online?”“Yeah. To be honest, I didn’t even want to go on a blind date today, but when I realized it was you, I felt so glad I came.”“Thank you.”“Amelia Rose Whitmore has regretted losing you for a long time now,” she added softly.“What do you mean?”

  • When She Returned, I Let Her Go   Chapter 9

Three years later, my travels came to an end.I returned to my home. That very evening, Amelia appeared at the entrance of my apartment building.I stood up by the window, silently watching her from above. She had lost a considerable amount of weight, the corners of her mouth sloped downward, and the clothes she wore looked like the very ones she had worn three years ago.Her hair had turned gray, too.Dad walked over to my side, speaking with a heavy sigh.“During all these years you were away, she came over to visit me quite often.“Sometimes she would just sit and listen to me talk about your childhood, and other times she would stare blankly at your photos.“Most of the time, she would stay in your room, clutching your marriage certificate in her hand, completely dazed.”Dad pointed to the new additions around the apartment, his face filled with mixed emotions.“The year before last, I mentioned that my lower back was aching, and she went straight out and bought me that

A month later, my phone rang. The caller ID showed Amelia’s grandmother.I hesitated for a moment before finally answering.“Alessia, is everything okay?”“Nicholas... it’s me.”It was Austin.“Is there something you need?”“Nicholas, Amelia only did all those things to save my life. You can’t treat her like this.”“I divorced her so she could take care of you without any lingering obligations or regrets, didn’t I?”“It’s not the same.”“How is it not the same?”“She still has her grandmother to take care of.”“Isn’t that her responsibility?”“Well... that used to be your responsibility.”I let out a quiet, bitter laugh.“She’s her grandmother, not mine.”“It shouldn’t be like this... Everything is going wrong! Did you say something to her? She told me she won’t accompany me for my hospital checkups anymore, and that she’s already done more than enough for me.”So that was the real reason behind this call.He had called simply to interrogate me.In the past, he had no

My first stop was Aspen.I had heard people say that May and June were the best months to visit.I took in the breathtaking views of Maroon Bells and Independence Pass.I hiked up the snow-capped mountain trails.I watched the golden glow of the sun reflecting off the mountain peaks at sunrise. In the end, I settled into a cozy bed-and-breakfast right by the lake.On the third evening of my stay, the innkeeper hosted a bonfire night for the guests. When it came to my turn during Truth or Dare, I drew a Truth prompt, which immediately sent the whole group into a fit of laughter. The innkeeper held up a hand to hush the crowd.“Is Amelia Whitmore your wife?”I froze for a moment.“Ex-wife.”A sudden silence fell over the circle.“Do you... all know her?” I asked. One of the girls stepped forward to explain. “We stumbled across her apology vlog online.“She said you were traveling alone, and she hoped that anyone who ran into you would look after you on her behalf.“She al

It was Amelia.“Nicholas, are you really leaving?”Those were the first words out of her mouth as she blocked the path of my RV.Her second question was: “Why?”Strands of hair, soaked with sweat, clung to her forehead, and her eyes were bloodshot with panic.I stepped down from the vehicle.“If I hadn’t hit the brakes in time, you would be dead.”“Why?” she repeated frantically.“How did you end up here?”“Your father told me you were leaving.”“Since you already know, then step out of the way!”“Nicholas, why? Everything was fine between us.”I let out a cold, hollow laugh. “Then why did you leave three years ago?”“My mother was sick…”“May 28th, 2021—the anniversary of your mother’s passing. Do you really want to keep asking?”Her voice caught in her throat. “You knew?”“Yeah.”Her voice turned raspy and hoarse. “He and I are just friends! Besides, I’m back now, and I’m never leaving again.”She was back.So was I supposed to just erase the last three years as if
