Chapter 3

작가: Glamour Pig
The doorbell rang.

Amelia went to open the door.

Austin stood right outside.

Dressed in a crisp white shirt, he dangled Amelia’s phone in the air with a faint smirk.

“What are you doing here?”

“Bringing your phone back to you, of course. Your grandmother specifically called to nag me about it.”

Amelia’s tone was light and cheerful. The slight curve of her lips matched the exact smile on Austin’s face.

In just three short years, they already carried the unmistakable likeness of a married couple.

Yet I was the one who was her husband.

Amelia’s gaze fell on his unbuttoned collar, and her brows knitted together slightly. “Wait here a second.”

With that, she brushed past me, crossed the living room, and walked into the guest room.

When she emerged, she was holding a sewing kit.

“I’m going to drop him off at home first. Go to sleep without me,” she said, directing the words at me.

“Are you coming back tonight?”

“Of course.”

Her fingers moved deftly as she threaded the needle. With a few swift, practiced stitches, she embroidered a small daisy onto his shirt collar—yellow petals with a red center.

Austin offered her a fond, indulgent look, shaking his head with a helpless laugh. “She just loves doing this!”

Turning his attention to me, Austin added, “Amelia is really skilled with her hands. If you have any damaged clothes, Nicholas, you can ask her to mend them for you. She does a wonderful job.”

“Was that little cat on your white shirt embroidered by her, too?” I asked.

“Yeah. Does it look good?”

“It looks good.”

A week before we registered our marriage, I had complained that my white shirt looked too plain and asked her to embroider something on it for me.

She had repeatedly made excuses to turn me down. When I pressed the matter a couple of times, she had simply snapped, “Where am I supposed to find the time for that?”

As it turned out, it wasn’t a matter of time at all. It was simply a matter of who was asking.

The elevator arrived with a chime.

Amelia left to walk Austin out.

Once again, I was left all alone in the quiet apartment.

After a moment, I sent her a text message.

“Come back early. I have something to tell you.”

Her reply came back almost immediately: “What is it? Austin is fragile, so I might be back a bit late. Just tell me now.”

“Are you in love with Austin?”

“What kind of nonsense is that? He’s just my friend.”

“You mend his clothes, and you take him to visit your grandmother. But you’ve never mended anything for me, and you’ve never taken me along to see your grandmother. Compared to me, he acts more like your husband.”

A few seconds later, my phone rang. It was Amelia.

“You really misunderstood us over something as silly as this?”

“It’s not a misunderstanding.”

“It’s my fault,” she softened her tone. “Austin told me before that men tend to be possessive. We’ve been apart for three years, so I don’t blame you for misinterpreting things.”

“He said that?”

“That’s not important. What matters is that the one I married is you. We’re going to have a long, long time to be together in the future.”

Her voice suddenly turned rushed. “My ride is here; I really have to go now.

“Don’t overthink things. I’ll be back soon.”

A long time?

Were three years considered a long time?

She had spent three whole years by Austin’s side in Seabrook while I was left entirely alone in Harborcrest.

I went home alone, worked alone, and took care of her grandmother all by myself.

I laughed at myself, though there was no joy in it.

“Three years... is long enough.”

She didn’t come home that night.

The next day, I went into work to hand in my resignation.

Amelia walked in from outside.

“Did you not come home last night?” I asked.

“It was getting too late, and I was afraid of waking you. I just crashed on the couch at his place for the night. You’re not mad, are you?”

“No, I’m not mad.”

“By the way, today is Grandma’s birthday. She invited Austin over—you don’t mind, right?”

“I don’t mind.”

“That’s my Nicholas—always so open-minded.”

It wasn’t that I was open-minded. It was simply that I didn’t care anymore.

By six o’clock in the evening, when I returned home after work, Alessia and Austin had already arrived.

He was sitting right next to Alessia, with Amelia on her other side.

I stood frozen at the entrance for a moment.

Before I could close the front door behind me, a gust of chilly wind swept into the entryway.

Amelia frowned immediately, pulling off her jacket and draping it over Austin’s shoulders.

“Close the door!” her voice was sharp and stern.

I closed the door without a word and sat down in the seat furthest away from their happy little family.

“Two Austins?” Alessia’s mind started wandering again, looking back and forth between us in confusion.

“Alessia, I’m Austin,” he corrected her with a warm smile.

“Ah, look at my terrible memory! Austin, dear, you’re finally back. Amelia waited for you for such a long, long time.”

“Yeah, I’m back now.”

“So, when are you two getting married? I’ve already started putting together everything Amelia will need for the wedding.”

“Alessia, you remembered wrong. Nicholas is Amelia’s husband,” Austin explained politely.

Yet, despite his words, Alessia had already reached out and brought his and Amelia’s hands together, holding them tightly in her lap.

“It’s getting late. I’m going to make dinner. What would you all like to eat?” Amelia stood up, asking the room in general, but keeping her eyes fixed entirely on Austin.

“I want garlic butter shrimp,” Austin chimed in.

Amelia’s face instantly darkened.

Austin was in poor health and was supposed to limit his seafood intake.

Realizing his slip-up, Austin shrank his neck slightly and yielded helplessly. “Whatever you cook, I’ll love it.”

Amelia’s expression softened a little, though she gave him a subtle, warning glare.

Their interactions were natural, intimate, and warm—as if they had seamlessly turned this apartment into their own home in Harborcrest.

Austin turned to look at me. “You haven’t asked Nicholas what he wants to eat yet.”

“He’s not as high-maintenance as you are,” Amelia answered casually. “He’s not a picky eater.”

Not a picky eater?

It was simply that she had never taken the time to learn what I actually liked.

Late one night, my phone rang.It was Amelia.“Honey, who is it?”“Amelia,” I answered softly.Isabella paused for a moment. “Answer it. Maybe it’s something urgent.”I picked up the call.“Nicholas…”“It’s me. Is something wrong?”“Nicholas... I’m so tired,” her voice was hoarse, sounding like someone who hadn’t spoken in a very long time.Isabella opened Austin’s video feed on her phone. In the video, Austin was flying into a rage once again, holding a knife against his own neck to threaten Amelia. The background was their former home in Seabrook—now completely wrecked and littered with broken clutter, clearly the aftermath of a violent struggle.“Nicholas... I regret everything.”“It’s too late,” I said calmly. “Go get some sleep.”“Nicholas... when I left you three years ago, it wasn’t because I loved Austin. I was just unwilling to let go of the past. I wanted him to see how good I was... but I was wrong. I never imagined I would lose you.”“It’s all in the past now

After leaving my place, Amelia didn’t go back home.Instead, she went straight to Seabrook.Because Austin was still there.Later on, the vlog that Austin had left inactive for three years finally resumed its updates. And she never came to see me again.Six months later, my father arranged a blind date for me.The meeting took place at a local coffee shop. When I arrived, my date was already seated at the table.“Hello, my name is Isabella Claire Harrington,” she introduced herself with a warm smile.“I’m—”“Nicholas. Nicholas Bennett.”“Did my dad tell you my name beforehand?”She shook her head. “Don’t misunderstand—your father didn’t tell me anything. I recognized you the moment I saw you.”“Because of... the videos online?”“Yeah. To be honest, I didn’t even want to go on a blind date today, but when I realized it was you, I felt so glad I came.”“Thank you.”“Amelia Rose Whitmore has regretted losing you for a long time now,” she added softly.“What do you mean?”

  • When She Returned, I Let Her Go   Chapter 9

Three years later, my travels came to an end.I returned to my home. That very evening, Amelia appeared at the entrance of my apartment building.I stood up by the window, silently watching her from above. She had lost a considerable amount of weight, the corners of her mouth sloped downward, and the clothes she wore looked like the very ones she had worn three years ago.Her hair had turned gray, too.Dad walked over to my side, speaking with a heavy sigh.“During all these years you were away, she came over to visit me quite often.“Sometimes she would just sit and listen to me talk about your childhood, and other times she would stare blankly at your photos.“Most of the time, she would stay in your room, clutching your marriage certificate in her hand, completely dazed.”Dad pointed to the new additions around the apartment, his face filled with mixed emotions.“The year before last, I mentioned that my lower back was aching, and she went straight out and bought me that

  • When She Returned, I Let Her Go   Chapter 8

A month later, my phone rang. The caller ID showed Amelia’s grandmother.I hesitated for a moment before finally answering.“Alessia, is everything okay?”“Nicholas... it’s me.”It was Austin.“Is there something you need?”“Nicholas, Amelia only did all those things to save my life. You can’t treat her like this.”“I divorced her so she could take care of you without any lingering obligations or regrets, didn’t I?”“It’s not the same.”“How is it not the same?”“She still has her grandmother to take care of.”“Isn’t that her responsibility?”“Well... that used to be your responsibility.”I let out a quiet, bitter laugh.“She’s her grandmother, not mine.”“It shouldn’t be like this... Everything is going wrong! Did you say something to her? She told me she won’t accompany me for my hospital checkups anymore, and that she’s already done more than enough for me.”So that was the real reason behind this call.He had called simply to interrogate me.In the past, he had no

  • When She Returned, I Let Her Go   Chapter 7

My first stop was Aspen.I had heard people say that May and June were the best months to visit.I took in the breathtaking views of Maroon Bells and Independence Pass.I hiked up the snow-capped mountain trails.I watched the golden glow of the sun reflecting off the mountain peaks at sunrise. In the end, I settled into a cozy bed-and-breakfast right by the lake.On the third evening of my stay, the innkeeper hosted a bonfire night for the guests. When it came to my turn during Truth or Dare, I drew a Truth prompt, which immediately sent the whole group into a fit of laughter. The innkeeper held up a hand to hush the crowd.“Is Amelia Whitmore your wife?”I froze for a moment.“Ex-wife.”A sudden silence fell over the circle.“Do you... all know her?” I asked. One of the girls stepped forward to explain. “We stumbled across her apology vlog online.“She said you were traveling alone, and she hoped that anyone who ran into you would look after you on her behalf.“She al

It was Amelia.“Nicholas, are you really leaving?”Those were the first words out of her mouth as she blocked the path of my RV.Her second question was: “Why?”Strands of hair, soaked with sweat, clung to her forehead, and her eyes were bloodshot with panic.I stepped down from the vehicle.“If I hadn’t hit the brakes in time, you would be dead.”“Why?” she repeated frantically.“How did you end up here?”“Your father told me you were leaving.”“Since you already know, then step out of the way!”“Nicholas, why? Everything was fine between us.”I let out a cold, hollow laugh. “Then why did you leave three years ago?”“My mother was sick…”“May 28th, 2021—the anniversary of your mother’s passing. Do you really want to keep asking?”Her voice caught in her throat. “You knew?”“Yeah.”Her voice turned raspy and hoarse. “He and I are just friends! Besides, I’m back now, and I’m never leaving again.”She was back.So was I supposed to just erase the last three years as if
