“Is it final then?”

As I walked out of the courthouse, my father, Matthew Bennett, stepped toward me with slow, unsteady steps.

“Are you divorced?

“Did she show up?”

“No.”

“Does she even know?”

I shook my head. “The court issued a public summons for sixty days, but no one could reach her. I don’t think she had the time to check it anyway.”

My father’s brows furrowed into a deep, heavy frown. “Because of Austin?”

“Yeah. He was undergoing surgery at the time. It was a matter of life and death.”

Dad’s mouth tightened into a rigid, straight line. “Is he getting better now?”

“Maybe.”

“Nicholas... don’t you still love her?”

“We were married for three years, and she made every single one of his meals without missing a day. Dad, she might have a place for me in her heart, but she has a place for him, too.”

My father’s expression grew even more solemn, but he didn’t say another word.

Eight years ago, we met in a hospital.

Back then, Amelia was already the most renowned cardiothoracic surgeon in the state. I was merely one of her patients.

Every morning at eight o’clock, she would lead her team of doctors on their rounds. Her gaze never lingered on me, yet every single time, she would leave a piece of candy on my bedside table.

She told me that medicine was bitter, and a piece of candy made it a little easier to swallow.

On the day I was discharged, Amelia came to do rounds alone.

She told me that I was fully recovered and wouldn’t need to come back anymore.

I couldn’t hide the disappointment in my eyes, but I still mustered up the courage to ask if I could court her.

A bright, brilliant smile bloomed across her face.

“I’ve been waiting for so long,” she said. “You finally said it.”

Back then, everyone in the hospital knew Dr. Whitmore was fond of me. During my month-long stay, she swapped every shift she could just to catch an extra glimpse of me.

There were times when she worked back-to-back night and day shifts, all just to ask me one simple question: “How are you feeling today?”

Ding!

The elevator doors slid open, snapping me back from my memories.

When I arrived back home, my phone screen lit up. To my surprise, it was a message from Amelia.

It was an image—a flight ticket from Seabrook to Harborcrest, scheduled for tomorrow.

A second later, another message popped up.

“Hubby, I’ll be home soon!”

I stood in the doorway, staring at those words for a very, very long time.

Last year, I suffered a bout of acute appendicitis. When I was rushed to the emergency room, I had sent her a similar message.

The only difference was that mine was a desperate question.

“Honey, can you come back?”

That day, my phone remained dead silent for twenty-four hours.

Later, I saw her in one of Austin’s vlogs.

She looked anxious and worried. As the camera zoomed out, I saw her carefully squeezing whipped cream onto a cake.

Written across the top of the cake in neat icing were the words: Wishing Austin good health and a peaceful life.

It had been three years. On the exact day I decided to let her go, she suddenly told me she was coming home.

I opened the door, bent down to change my shoes, and surveyed the apartment.

Every corner bore only the marks of my solitary life.

The unworn women’s slippers sitting in the shoe cabinet had remained untouched for three whole years.

The clothes drying on the balcony were exclusively mine.

There were very few items that belonged to her, and items that belonged to us simply did not exist.

I opened Austin’s pinned video—the one with the highest number of likes.

It was filmed at their home in Seabrook.

Underneath the shoe cabinet sat two pairs of house slippers, neatly aligned.

One was pink; the other was blue.

The soles of the pink pair were noticeably worn down.

On their balcony hung their laundry, side by side, looking just like any ordinary married couple’s.

Then the camera panned downward, revealing a vibrant array of colorful flowers.

Austin appeared in front of the lens. Though he feigned annoyance, a wide, joyful smile lit up his face as he introduced every single plant one by one: roses, daisies, sunflowers, and bougainvillea.

Amelia had planted and tended to all of them for him—for no other reason than to make him happy.

During our second year living together, I had planted some flowers on our balcony, too.

Yet she would always forget to water them.

When I asked her, “Amelia, can’t you put a little heart into this?”

She had replied nonchalantly, “They’re just flowers.”

Just flowers.

Two simple words. But in truth, she simply didn’t care enough when it came to me.

Late one night, my phone rang.It was Amelia.“Honey, who is it?”“Amelia,” I answered softly.Isabella paused for a moment. “Answer it. Maybe it’s something urgent.”I picked up the call.“Nicholas…”“It’s me. Is something wrong?”“Nicholas... I’m so tired,” her voice was hoarse, sounding like someone who hadn’t spoken in a very long time.Isabella opened Austin’s video feed on her phone. In the video, Austin was flying into a rage once again, holding a knife against his own neck to threaten Amelia. The background was their former home in Seabrook—now completely wrecked and littered with broken clutter, clearly the aftermath of a violent struggle.“Nicholas... I regret everything.”“It’s too late,” I said calmly. “Go get some sleep.”“Nicholas... when I left you three years ago, it wasn’t because I loved Austin. I was just unwilling to let go of the past. I wanted him to see how good I was... but I was wrong. I never imagined I would lose you.”“It’s all in the past now

After leaving my place, Amelia didn’t go back home.Instead, she went straight to Seabrook.Because Austin was still there.Later on, the vlog that Austin had left inactive for three years finally resumed its updates. And she never came to see me again.Six months later, my father arranged a blind date for me.The meeting took place at a local coffee shop. When I arrived, my date was already seated at the table.“Hello, my name is Isabella Claire Harrington,” she introduced herself with a warm smile.“I’m—”“Nicholas. Nicholas Bennett.”“Did my dad tell you my name beforehand?”She shook her head. “Don’t misunderstand—your father didn’t tell me anything. I recognized you the moment I saw you.”“Because of... the videos online?”“Yeah. To be honest, I didn’t even want to go on a blind date today, but when I realized it was you, I felt so glad I came.”“Thank you.”“Amelia Rose Whitmore has regretted losing you for a long time now,” she added softly.“What do you mean?”

Three years later, my travels came to an end.I returned to my home. That very evening, Amelia appeared at the entrance of my apartment building.I stood up by the window, silently watching her from above. She had lost a considerable amount of weight, the corners of her mouth sloped downward, and the clothes she wore looked like the very ones she had worn three years ago.Her hair had turned gray, too.Dad walked over to my side, speaking with a heavy sigh.“During all these years you were away, she came over to visit me quite often.“Sometimes she would just sit and listen to me talk about your childhood, and other times she would stare blankly at your photos.“Most of the time, she would stay in your room, clutching your marriage certificate in her hand, completely dazed.”Dad pointed to the new additions around the apartment, his face filled with mixed emotions.“The year before last, I mentioned that my lower back was aching, and she went straight out and bought me that

A month later, my phone rang. The caller ID showed Amelia’s grandmother.I hesitated for a moment before finally answering.“Alessia, is everything okay?”“Nicholas... it’s me.”It was Austin.“Is there something you need?”“Nicholas, Amelia only did all those things to save my life. You can’t treat her like this.”“I divorced her so she could take care of you without any lingering obligations or regrets, didn’t I?”“It’s not the same.”“How is it not the same?”“She still has her grandmother to take care of.”“Isn’t that her responsibility?”“Well... that used to be your responsibility.”I let out a quiet, bitter laugh.“She’s her grandmother, not mine.”“It shouldn’t be like this... Everything is going wrong! Did you say something to her? She told me she won’t accompany me for my hospital checkups anymore, and that she’s already done more than enough for me.”So that was the real reason behind this call.He had called simply to interrogate me.In the past, he had no

My first stop was Aspen.I had heard people say that May and June were the best months to visit.I took in the breathtaking views of Maroon Bells and Independence Pass.I hiked up the snow-capped mountain trails.I watched the golden glow of the sun reflecting off the mountain peaks at sunrise. In the end, I settled into a cozy bed-and-breakfast right by the lake.On the third evening of my stay, the innkeeper hosted a bonfire night for the guests. When it came to my turn during Truth or Dare, I drew a Truth prompt, which immediately sent the whole group into a fit of laughter. The innkeeper held up a hand to hush the crowd.“Is Amelia Whitmore your wife?”I froze for a moment.“Ex-wife.”A sudden silence fell over the circle.“Do you... all know her?” I asked. One of the girls stepped forward to explain. “We stumbled across her apology vlog online.“She said you were traveling alone, and she hoped that anyone who ran into you would look after you on her behalf.“She al

It was Amelia.“Nicholas, are you really leaving?”Those were the first words out of her mouth as she blocked the path of my RV.Her second question was: “Why?”Strands of hair, soaked with sweat, clung to her forehead, and her eyes were bloodshot with panic.I stepped down from the vehicle.“If I hadn’t hit the brakes in time, you would be dead.”“Why?” she repeated frantically.“How did you end up here?”“Your father told me you were leaving.”“Since you already know, then step out of the way!”“Nicholas, why? Everything was fine between us.”I let out a cold, hollow laugh. “Then why did you leave three years ago?”“My mother was sick…”“May 28th, 2021—the anniversary of your mother’s passing. Do you really want to keep asking?”Her voice caught in her throat. “You knew?”“Yeah.”Her voice turned raspy and hoarse. “He and I are just friends! Besides, I’m back now, and I’m never leaving again.”She was back.So was I supposed to just erase the last three years as if
