Chapter 5

작가: Glamour Pig
On Saturday morning, I was out on the balcony planting flowers.

Amelia walked over.

“Nicholas, what are you doing?”

The floor was strewn with dirt and empty flowerpots.

“You’re awake? Come help me plant these flowers.”

“Sure. The sapling has been sitting here for days—what made you suddenly decide to plant it today?”

“Just a sudden whim. Will you stay and help me?”

“Of course!”

She rolled up her sleeves and held the flower sapling upright.

I stopped the trowel in my hand and looked at her intently.

“Why are you staring at me like that?”

“Well, it’s been a long time, after all.”

“We’ll have plenty of time from now on.”

“Amelia, do you still remember what I said when I proposed to you three years ago?”

“I remember. How could I ever forget?”

“Can you answer me one more time today?”

With a face full of smiles, she stood up straight and agreed softly.

I patted the dirt off my hands and dropped down onto one knee.

“Amelia, I’ve imagined proposing to you in countless ways, but there’s never been a moment where I wanted to share my life with you more than this right now. I want to see you every morning when I open my eyes, and every night before I fall asleep.

“Amelia Rose Whitmore, I love you. Will you marry me?”

Suddenly, the doorbell rang.

She turned to open the door, but stopped dead in her tracks in the living room.

“Wait for me to get back. I’ll give you my answer then.”

She opened the door—it was Austin.

He didn’t say a word, simply thrusting his medical records into Amelia’s hands.

She turned to look back at me, her expression brimming with guilt.

“I’m sorry, I can’t stay with you today.”

“Why?”

“I can’t let him go for his checkup alone.”

“Why can’t he go alone?”

“You don’t understand. His illness requires constant supervision.”

She washed the dirt off her hands, snatched her car keys, and turned to leave.

I called out to her.

“Aren’t you going to give me your answer?”

“We’re already married. The answer isn’t important anymore.”

“What about the flowers then? Are we still planting them?"

“Wait for me to come back, okay?”

Without waiting for my reply, her figure vanished from my sight.

We’re divorced.

And I don’t want to wait anymore.

I sat cross-legged on the floor.

I cleaned up all the dirt on the ground, including the black potting soil Austin had brought over.

I pulled the newly planted sapling straight out of the pot by its roots.

Finally, I tossed all of it directly into the trash can.

My phone screen lit up with a message from Amelia:

“Nicholas, don’t worry, I won’t disappear like I did three years ago. Wait for me to come home and cook dinner for you.”

I stared at that line of text for a very long time.

I pressed and held the message, then tapped delete.

Along with that, I added her to my block list, thoroughly clearing out every single trace of our shared past.

I made a phone call and hired a moving company.

In less than half an hour, the moving truck and workers arrived.

“Sir, which items need to be moved?”

“Everything.”

The television, refrigerator, and appliances filled up a third of the truck.

The furniture, sofa, and our marital bed took up another third.

As for whatever was left, none of it mattered anymore.

Over these three years, I was the one who had bought every single piece of furniture here.

If I were forced to abandon them for her sake, I simply couldn’t bring myself to do it.

I placed the court’s divorce decree on the table and left a written note:

“Amelia,

I’m leaving the apartment to you so you’ll always have a place of your own. But I’m taking everything inside the house with me. Also, I wish you and Austin a lifetime of happiness.”

I threw my backpack over my shoulder and walked out of the home without a single backward glance.

Downstairs, my RV was already waiting.

I started the engine.

Just as I accelerated, a familiar figure suddenly darted across the driveway.

The screech of slamming brakes pierced the air.

“Nicholas Bennett!”

  • When She Returned, I Let Her Go   Chapter 11

Late one night, my phone rang.It was Amelia.“Honey, who is it?”“Amelia,” I answered softly.Isabella paused for a moment. “Answer it. Maybe it’s something urgent.”I picked up the call.“Nicholas…”“It’s me. Is something wrong?”“Nicholas... I’m so tired,” her voice was hoarse, sounding like someone who hadn’t spoken in a very long time.Isabella opened Austin’s video feed on her phone. In the video, Austin was flying into a rage once again, holding a knife against his own neck to threaten Amelia. The background was their former home in Seabrook—now completely wrecked and littered with broken clutter, clearly the aftermath of a violent struggle.“Nicholas... I regret everything.”“It’s too late,” I said calmly. “Go get some sleep.”“Nicholas... when I left you three years ago, it wasn’t because I loved Austin. I was just unwilling to let go of the past. I wanted him to see how good I was... but I was wrong. I never imagined I would lose you.”“It’s all in the past now

  • When She Returned, I Let Her Go   Chapter 10

After leaving my place, Amelia didn’t go back home.Instead, she went straight to Seabrook.Because Austin was still there.Later on, the vlog that Austin had left inactive for three years finally resumed its updates. And she never came to see me again.Six months later, my father arranged a blind date for me.The meeting took place at a local coffee shop. When I arrived, my date was already seated at the table.“Hello, my name is Isabella Claire Harrington,” she introduced herself with a warm smile.“I’m—”“Nicholas. Nicholas Bennett.”“Did my dad tell you my name beforehand?”She shook her head. “Don’t misunderstand—your father didn’t tell me anything. I recognized you the moment I saw you.”“Because of... the videos online?”“Yeah. To be honest, I didn’t even want to go on a blind date today, but when I realized it was you, I felt so glad I came.”“Thank you.”“Amelia Rose Whitmore has regretted losing you for a long time now,” she added softly.“What do you mean?”

  • When She Returned, I Let Her Go   Chapter 9

Three years later, my travels came to an end.I returned to my home. That very evening, Amelia appeared at the entrance of my apartment building.I stood up by the window, silently watching her from above. She had lost a considerable amount of weight, the corners of her mouth sloped downward, and the clothes she wore looked like the very ones she had worn three years ago.Her hair had turned gray, too.Dad walked over to my side, speaking with a heavy sigh.“During all these years you were away, she came over to visit me quite often.“Sometimes she would just sit and listen to me talk about your childhood, and other times she would stare blankly at your photos.“Most of the time, she would stay in your room, clutching your marriage certificate in her hand, completely dazed.”Dad pointed to the new additions around the apartment, his face filled with mixed emotions.“The year before last, I mentioned that my lower back was aching, and she went straight out and bought me that

  • When She Returned, I Let Her Go   Chapter 8

A month later, my phone rang. The caller ID showed Amelia’s grandmother.I hesitated for a moment before finally answering.“Alessia, is everything okay?”“Nicholas... it’s me.”It was Austin.“Is there something you need?”“Nicholas, Amelia only did all those things to save my life. You can’t treat her like this.”“I divorced her so she could take care of you without any lingering obligations or regrets, didn’t I?”“It’s not the same.”“How is it not the same?”“She still has her grandmother to take care of.”“Isn’t that her responsibility?”“Well... that used to be your responsibility.”I let out a quiet, bitter laugh.“She’s her grandmother, not mine.”“It shouldn’t be like this... Everything is going wrong! Did you say something to her? She told me she won’t accompany me for my hospital checkups anymore, and that she’s already done more than enough for me.”So that was the real reason behind this call.He had called simply to interrogate me.In the past, he had no

  • When She Returned, I Let Her Go   Chapter 7

My first stop was Aspen.I had heard people say that May and June were the best months to visit.I took in the breathtaking views of Maroon Bells and Independence Pass.I hiked up the snow-capped mountain trails.I watched the golden glow of the sun reflecting off the mountain peaks at sunrise. In the end, I settled into a cozy bed-and-breakfast right by the lake.On the third evening of my stay, the innkeeper hosted a bonfire night for the guests. When it came to my turn during Truth or Dare, I drew a Truth prompt, which immediately sent the whole group into a fit of laughter. The innkeeper held up a hand to hush the crowd.“Is Amelia Whitmore your wife?”I froze for a moment.“Ex-wife.”A sudden silence fell over the circle.“Do you... all know her?” I asked. One of the girls stepped forward to explain. “We stumbled across her apology vlog online.“She said you were traveling alone, and she hoped that anyone who ran into you would look after you on her behalf.“She al

  • When She Returned, I Let Her Go   Chapter 6

It was Amelia.“Nicholas, are you really leaving?”Those were the first words out of her mouth as she blocked the path of my RV.Her second question was: “Why?”Strands of hair, soaked with sweat, clung to her forehead, and her eyes were bloodshot with panic.I stepped down from the vehicle.“If I hadn’t hit the brakes in time, you would be dead.”“Why?” she repeated frantically.“How did you end up here?”“Your father told me you were leaving.”“Since you already know, then step out of the way!”“Nicholas, why? Everything was fine between us.”I let out a cold, hollow laugh. “Then why did you leave three years ago?”“My mother was sick…”“May 28th, 2021—the anniversary of your mother’s passing. Do you really want to keep asking?”Her voice caught in her throat. “You knew?”“Yeah.”Her voice turned raspy and hoarse. “He and I are just friends! Besides, I’m back now, and I’m never leaving again.”She was back.So was I supposed to just erase the last three years as if
