Chapter 4

작가: Glamour Pig
The food was brought out and served on the table.

Roasted seasonal vegetables, soup, roasted chicken with herb gravy, and barbecue ribs—it was quite the feast.

Amelia stood up, took Grandma’s bowl, and filled it with soup.

“Grandma, here’s a roasted chicken, just the way you like it.”

Next, she used her fork to place a barbecue rib on Austin’s plate.

“Don’t eat too much. The doctor said you need to limit your meat intake.”

When it came to my turn, she didn’t seem to know what to say. After a brief pause, she simply dropped a serving of green vegetables into my bowl.

Austin teased with a warm smile, “Does Nicholas like eating vegetables?”

“Didn’t I tell you?” Amelia replied. “He’s not a picky eater. He’ll eat anything.”

Except I didn’t like vegetables.

Alessia pulled Amelia down to sit beside her and placed a barbecue rib on her plate.

“Stop serving everyone else and sit down to eat, honey.”

“Alessia,” Austin interjected. “She just finished cooking, so she won’t feel like eating meat right now—it makes her feel too greasy.”

“Oh? Then what should she do?”

“She’s just like that for a bit. A bowl of soup will help settle her stomach.”

As he spoke, a bowl of soup was pushed right in front of Amelia.

In three years, she had come to know Austin inside and out.

And Austin knew her just as deeply.

I felt like a complete outsider.

I never even knew Amelia could cook.

Nor did I know that after cooking, she had a habit of drinking a bowl of soup.

She had clearly come back home.

Yet she felt farther away from me than ever.

Once everyone was full, I went into the kitchen to wash the dishes.

Austin cleared the table and followed me inside with the leftover plates and bowls.

“Nicholas.”

“Is there something you need?”

“That court announcement... I saw it.”

“What are you trying to say?”

“I just wanted to say that you’ve misunderstood Amelia. If I hadn’t been sick, she wouldn’t have…”

“Wouldn’t have what?”

“Either way, we’re not what you think we are.”

“Then what are you?”

“We’re just friends.”

“If you’re her friend, why didn’t you tell her about the court announcement?”

Austin froze for a second, avoiding my eyes.

“I... I was sick. I needed her.”

“I saw your vlogs,” I said calmly. “Let me ask you—if you were in my shoes, what would you think? Friends? A couple? Or husband and wife?”

“We’re really not what you think. She has never done anything to betray you—not even once.”

“And living like that doesn’t count as betrayal?”

“Regardless, we’re just friends.”

He turned around to leave, but his steps suddenly faltered.

“The soil Amelia asked me to bring for you—I brought it. Whether you use it or not is up to you.”

Soon, the sound of laughing and chatting floated in from the living room.

I wiped my hands dry and walked out onto the balcony.

The small flower sapling was still lying on the floor.

Beside it sat a small bag of potting soil.

Yet both the sapling and the soil belonged to Austin.

Only the flowerpot belonged to me.

She had only been back for two short days, yet this apartment was already filled with traces of Austin’s presence.

I walked back out and sat in a quiet corner of the living room.

Gradually, the sound of laughter faded away.

Amelia stood up, holding Austin’s bag in her hand.

“Let’s go. I’ll drop you back home.”

She turned around to look at me. “I’ll leave Grandma in your care.”

“Why are you the one dropping Austin off instead of me?”

“Don’t you dislike him?”

So she knew all along.

I smiled faintly and simply said, “Okay.”

On the drive over, Alessia remained quiet.

As we neared the nursing home, she suddenly broke the silence.

“When Austin left back then, it was only because he didn’t want to drag Amelia down with him. Otherwise, it never would have been your turn.”

My hands tightened on the steering wheel.

“I know.”

“Now that Amelia is back, you two should settle down and live a proper life together.”

I didn’t answer her, remaining completely silent.

When we arrived at the nursing home, a nurse stepped forward to help Alessia back to her room.

I turned around and walked over to the nursing station.

“Mr. Bennett, is there something you need us to take note of?”

“Please change Alessia’s emergency contact number.”

“Of course. Who should we change it to?”

“Amelia Rose Whitmore. She’s her granddaughter.”

The nurse put down her pen. “Alright, it’s been updated.”

Late one night, my phone rang.It was Amelia.“Honey, who is it?”“Amelia,” I answered softly.Isabella paused for a moment. “Answer it. Maybe it’s something urgent.”I picked up the call.“Nicholas…”“It’s me. Is something wrong?”“Nicholas... I’m so tired,” her voice was hoarse, sounding like someone who hadn’t spoken in a very long time.Isabella opened Austin’s video feed on her phone. In the video, Austin was flying into a rage once again, holding a knife against his own neck to threaten Amelia. The background was their former home in Seabrook—now completely wrecked and littered with broken clutter, clearly the aftermath of a violent struggle.“Nicholas... I regret everything.”“It’s too late,” I said calmly. “Go get some sleep.”“Nicholas... when I left you three years ago, it wasn’t because I loved Austin. I was just unwilling to let go of the past. I wanted him to see how good I was... but I was wrong. I never imagined I would lose you.”“It’s all in the past now

  • When She Returned, I Let Her Go   Chapter 10

After leaving my place, Amelia didn’t go back home.Instead, she went straight to Seabrook.Because Austin was still there.Later on, the vlog that Austin had left inactive for three years finally resumed its updates. And she never came to see me again.Six months later, my father arranged a blind date for me.The meeting took place at a local coffee shop. When I arrived, my date was already seated at the table.“Hello, my name is Isabella Claire Harrington,” she introduced herself with a warm smile.“I’m—”“Nicholas. Nicholas Bennett.”“Did my dad tell you my name beforehand?”She shook her head. “Don’t misunderstand—your father didn’t tell me anything. I recognized you the moment I saw you.”“Because of... the videos online?”“Yeah. To be honest, I didn’t even want to go on a blind date today, but when I realized it was you, I felt so glad I came.”“Thank you.”“Amelia Rose Whitmore has regretted losing you for a long time now,” she added softly.“What do you mean?”

  • When She Returned, I Let Her Go   Chapter 9

Three years later, my travels came to an end.I returned to my home. That very evening, Amelia appeared at the entrance of my apartment building.I stood up by the window, silently watching her from above. She had lost a considerable amount of weight, the corners of her mouth sloped downward, and the clothes she wore looked like the very ones she had worn three years ago.Her hair had turned gray, too.Dad walked over to my side, speaking with a heavy sigh.“During all these years you were away, she came over to visit me quite often.“Sometimes she would just sit and listen to me talk about your childhood, and other times she would stare blankly at your photos.“Most of the time, she would stay in your room, clutching your marriage certificate in her hand, completely dazed.”Dad pointed to the new additions around the apartment, his face filled with mixed emotions.“The year before last, I mentioned that my lower back was aching, and she went straight out and bought me that

A month later, my phone rang. The caller ID showed Amelia’s grandmother.I hesitated for a moment before finally answering.“Alessia, is everything okay?”“Nicholas... it’s me.”It was Austin.“Is there something you need?”“Nicholas, Amelia only did all those things to save my life. You can’t treat her like this.”“I divorced her so she could take care of you without any lingering obligations or regrets, didn’t I?”“It’s not the same.”“How is it not the same?”“She still has her grandmother to take care of.”“Isn’t that her responsibility?”“Well... that used to be your responsibility.”I let out a quiet, bitter laugh.“She’s her grandmother, not mine.”“It shouldn’t be like this... Everything is going wrong! Did you say something to her? She told me she won’t accompany me for my hospital checkups anymore, and that she’s already done more than enough for me.”So that was the real reason behind this call.He had called simply to interrogate me.In the past, he had no

  • When She Returned, I Let Her Go   Chapter 7

My first stop was Aspen.I had heard people say that May and June were the best months to visit.I took in the breathtaking views of Maroon Bells and Independence Pass.I hiked up the snow-capped mountain trails.I watched the golden glow of the sun reflecting off the mountain peaks at sunrise. In the end, I settled into a cozy bed-and-breakfast right by the lake.On the third evening of my stay, the innkeeper hosted a bonfire night for the guests. When it came to my turn during Truth or Dare, I drew a Truth prompt, which immediately sent the whole group into a fit of laughter. The innkeeper held up a hand to hush the crowd.“Is Amelia Whitmore your wife?”I froze for a moment.“Ex-wife.”A sudden silence fell over the circle.“Do you... all know her?” I asked. One of the girls stepped forward to explain. “We stumbled across her apology vlog online.“She said you were traveling alone, and she hoped that anyone who ran into you would look after you on her behalf.“She al

It was Amelia.“Nicholas, are you really leaving?”Those were the first words out of her mouth as she blocked the path of my RV.Her second question was: “Why?”Strands of hair, soaked with sweat, clung to her forehead, and her eyes were bloodshot with panic.I stepped down from the vehicle.“If I hadn’t hit the brakes in time, you would be dead.”“Why?” she repeated frantically.“How did you end up here?”“Your father told me you were leaving.”“Since you already know, then step out of the way!”“Nicholas, why? Everything was fine between us.”I let out a cold, hollow laugh. “Then why did you leave three years ago?”“My mother was sick…”“May 28th, 2021—the anniversary of your mother’s passing. Do you really want to keep asking?”Her voice caught in her throat. “You knew?”“Yeah.”Her voice turned raspy and hoarse. “He and I are just friends! Besides, I’m back now, and I’m never leaving again.”She was back.So was I supposed to just erase the last three years as if
