Tyler, defiantly smirking, lifted his chin and met Asher's glare with an cold stare. "You might want to take your hands off me, princess," he taunted, with a hint of mockery in his voice.
"I'll kill you," Asher growled, his fist clenched and ready to start a fight.
"I dare you," Tyler shot back, unfazed, a hint of challenge in his tone.
Just as Asher's fist was about to connect, Lia surged forward, stepping between the two boys. "Stop it, both of you! You're causing a scene, and if you don’t want to get expelled, I suggest you back off!" She pushed Asher away firmly, the reality of her words crashing down on him. He stumbled back, reluctantly releasing Tyler.
Asher spat out, "See you around, pretty boy," before storming off, tension following behind him.
Tyler turned to Lia, concern in eyes as he placed a hand on her arm. "Are you okay?" he asked, his tone softer now.
She slapped his hand away. "What makes you think you can just kiss me anytime you want?" Lia’s voice was laced with anger, her eyes narrowing at him.
Tyler raised his hands in a gesture of innocence. "I’m sorry," he replied, though a grin crept onto his face. Deep down, he enjoyed pushing Asher's buttons, and now he found joy in pushing further.
Lia's voice rose, sharp. "We had a deal, don’t cross your boundaries."
He smirked noting how the kiss seemed to stir something within her. As if reading his thoughts, Lia shot back, "You are unbelievable," before turning on her heel and walking away, leaving him watching her retreat.
Days turned into an uneasy silence as Lia avoided both boys. She had tried reaching out to Trudy, desperate to understand what had gone wrong, she needed her bestfriend, but Trudy remained distant, the phone calls unreturned and messages unread.
One afternoon, while sitting in her bedroom feeling isolated, Lia’s phone buzzed with a call from an unknown number. After a moment of hesitation, her curiosity got the better of her. "Who is this?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
"I’m outside your house; could we talk?" The voice was familiar, yet she couldn't make out who it was.
"You still haven’t answered my question," she pressed, feeling the tension tightening in her chest.
"It’s Zayn," he replied, causing her heart to skip. Zayn was the last person she expected to show interest in her well-being.
"Give me a minute," she said, ending the call. What could he possibly want? A mix of curiosity and confusion swirled in her stomach as she quickly changed into faded jeans and a simple tank top.
When she stepped outside, Zayn stood on her front porch, a warm smile across his face. "Hey," he greeted.
"Hi," she replied, hesitating before adding, "Do you want to come in?"
"No, thanks. I’m good out here," he said, his tone genuinely caring. "I actually just wanted to check up on you, make sure you’re doing alright."
Lia appreciated the concern, but it brought forth memories she'd rather forget. "I’m fine. So, you heard about everything?" she asked, trying to sound nonchalant.
"Yeah, I mean, you and Trudy were pretty much inseparable. I can’t understand why she would do something like that to you," Zayn said, his brow furrowing in empathy.
"I don't know either, but I'm going to find out," Lia declared, determination fueling her words.
Zayn’s smile turned comforting. "I’m here for you if you need someone to talk to," he offered, his eyes reassuring.
Suddenly, an all-too-familiar voice broke through the moment. "Sorry, but she already has me," Tyler interjected as he appeared from around the corner, a hint of possessiveness in his tone that caught both Lia and Zayn off guard.
"Tyler, what are you doing here?" Lia asked, her voice laced with surprise.
"You weren’t picking up my calls," Tyler replied with concern.
"I am aware of that," Lia said nonchalantly, trying to mask the guilt creeping in.
Zayn, sensing the rising tension, interjected, "I will leave you two alone," not wanting to be caught in the middle of an awkward confrontation.
"Yeah, you should," Tyler shot back, sending Zayn a glare that hinted at his protective instincts.
"Tyler!...." Lia gave him a cautioning stare, then turned back to Zayn, her expression softening. "...You don’t have to leave."
"No, it’s fine. I just wanted to make sure you were okay," Zayn said, taking a cautious step back.
"Okay, we'll talk later?" Lia asked, offering him a warm smile to ease the moment.
"Sure," Zayn replied, returning her smile before walking away, leaving an uneasy silence behind.
"You should stay away from him," Tyler advised.
"Oh, now you’re telling me who I should and shouldn’t be friends with?" Lia was taken aback, her eyebrows furrowing in frustration.
"It’s not what it seems. There’s just a lot you don’t know," Tyler said, his expression a mix of worry and concern.
"What does that mean? What don’t I know?" Lia pressed, her curiosity growing with each passing moment.
"Just stay away from him for now. I came to pick you up for the games fair; we’re already late," Tyler pointed swiftly shifting the topic.
"Shit, I forgot! Let me grab my phone," Lia exclaimed, bolting up the stairs to fetch her bag.
Once on his bike, the two sped off to the fair, the wind whipping through Lia's hair as she felt a rush of excitement. She immersed herself in the games, laughter and shouts of joy surrounding her, relishing the fun like she hadn't in ages. She won several prizes, her confidence soaring with each victory.
"Seems like you’re famous now," Tyler said, dropping her off at the entrance, his tone teasing.
"Oh, shut up," Lia giggled, her mood infectious.
"What happened to, ‘I’m old and rusty’?" Tyler laughed, playfully mocking her earlier sentiments.
"I guess I still have it in my blood! We should do this more often," Lia suggested, causing a genuine smile to spread across Tyler's face.
"I’ve got more tricks up my sleeve," Tyler joked, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
"Ouuu, tell me!" Lia leaned forward, eager to know.
"No, I won’t. Not until the time is right," he teased, his grin widening.
"Whatever... it’s getting late; I should head inside," Lia said, stepping back reluctantly.
"Lia, I’m really sorry about kissing you without your permission," Tyler suddenly said, his tone serious.
"Apology accepted. Today was fun, thank you," Lia replied, offering him a genuine smile that warmed him.
"You’re welcome," Tyler responded, his smile lingering as he drove off.
The next day at school, Zayn approached Lia with a cheerful smile. "Heyy," he said, his voice brightening her morning.
"Hi," she replied, her heart fluttering slightly as their eyes met.
"So, you and Tyler?" Zayn asked casually, trying to gauge the situation.
"God, please no. We’re just friends," Lia said, rolling her eyes as they walked to their next class together.
"So, there won’t be a problem if we hung out?" Zayn asked, an eager edge in his voice. Lia paused, contemplating the implications of that statement. It seemed harmless; they were just friends now.
"Of course not," she smiled, but her expression dimmed as she caught sight of Harper coming toward her, her mascara smudged and eyes red as if she had been crying her heart out.
"You!" Harper halted in front of Lia, fury and pain written on her face.
"Are you okay?" Lia asked with genuine concern, fully aware that it was rare to see Harper in such a vulnerable state.
"Don’t even act like you care, because this is all your fault," Harper spat, her voice laced with hate, taking Lia aback.
"Okay, I’m confused," Lia replied, her heart racing with anxiety.
"Asher broke up with me, and I know it’s because of you," Harper accused, obviously heart broken.
"Wow, didn’t see that coming. At least he didn’t cheat," Lia responded, attempting humor to lighten the weight of the situation.
"You think this is funny?" Harper stepped forward, her expression fierce as she reached to grab Lia, but Tyler stepped in between them, his protective instincts kicking in.
"Harper, you don’t have to do that," he said firmly with his gaze steady.
"Oh please, seriously? Her?" Harper exclaimed, directing a look of disgust at Lia. "...What do guys see in you anyway? You’re weak and ugly." The harsh words struck Lia deeply, leaving her momentarily speechless.
"Oh yeah, coming from the one with dripping makeup," Lia retorted, hurt creeping into her own voice.
"I will make your life a living hell," Harper declared, her eyes blazing with anger.
"From what I’m seeing, you’re already living in hell," Lia replied, a small chuckle escaping her lips despite the tension, catching Harper off guard.
"I am going to ruin you," Harper threatened, her glare more intense than ever.
"Harper, don’t," Zayn tried to intervene, his voice calming but firm.
"Oh, this will be so good. Do you really think it was just Asher and I who planned your so-called betrayal?" Harper shot back, her voice dripping with malice.
"What do you mean?" Lia stepped forward, her curiosity piqued despite the fear growing in her chest.
"To show that no one actually gives a shit about you...” Harper started, but Zayn interrupted her.
"Harper!" he called out sharply, yet she locked her gaze onto Lia’s.
"Your friend here was the one who gave us the idea in the first place," Harper said, and at this, disbelief washed over Lia, causing her to laugh.
"Is that the best you’ve got? You pulled the first one on Trudy; it might have worked then, but you need to try harder," Lia said defiantly, refusing to believe a word of what Harper was saying.
"You think I made it up? Ask him then," Harper said, gesturing toward Zayn. Lia’s gaze snapped to him, searching for confirmation, but he wouldn’t meet her eyes.
"Zayn, is it true?" Lia asked, her voice trembling as her heart sank at the thought of betrayal from a friend.
"Lia, I can explain," Zayn's words barely reached her ears as her heart dropped even further, leaving her feeling hollow and confused.
"What?..."
They sat on the rooftop in silence, the cool breeze brushing against their skin as they gazed down at the school grounds below. The world felt strangely distant from up there, smaller, quieter. Almost like it paused just for them.“I am sorry, that you have to have a father like Adrian,” Lia finally managed to say. Her voice was soft, weighed with sympathy and guilt she knew she didn’t owe but still felt.“There is nothing to be sorry about, it’s not your fault...” Tyler replied, shaking his head as he leaned back against the railing. “Besides, I have already gotten used to it. I shouldn’t expect anything different.” His words held no anger, just resignation, the kind that came from years of disappointment.“Why didn’t you tell me about the deal? You knew I would have understood,” Lia said, turning toward him with hurt lingering in her eyes.“I know, and I am sorry.” Tyler’s voice dropped lower, his expression tightening as if the truth pained him. “I should have told you, but… I gues
“Mum?” Lia’s voice came out small, almost like a child’s, half question, half fear. “…is everything okay?” She stepped further into the room, her heartbeat thudding in her ears.Stacey turned just enough for their eyes to meet, and in that single look, Lia felt her stomach twist. Something was wrong. Very wrong. Before she could speak again, the door opened. Tyler and Asher walked in, both stopping dead the moment they saw who was present. Shock flashed across their faces, mirroring Lia’s own confusion.“What’s going on?” Asher asked, his brows drawn tight, eyes bouncing between Stacey and Adrian.Principal Gabriel rose from his chair with a soft sigh. “I’ll give you all some privacy.” His voice was gentle, like he already knew the storm that was about to unfold. He stepped out.“Thank you, Gabriel,” Stacey said quietly.Silence followed, it was thick and suffocating.“What are we doing here?” Tyler finally snapped, his jaw clenched tight. He looked like every fiber of his being rejec
Lia sat across from Tyler’s mum, Miss Laura at a small table tucked between two tall bookshelves in the quiet bookstore. The place smelled faintly of old pages and cinnamon tea, and the morning light filtered gently through the front windows. Laura looked healthier than the last time Lia had seen her, almost glowing with regained strength.“Hey, Miss Laura,” Lia greeted softly.“Please, just call me Laura,” she replied with a gentle smile.Lia nodded, returning the smile. “How’s your health? I can see you’re a lot better now.”“Yes, dear. I can’t remember the last time I felt this healthy…” Laura sighed, a weight shifting in her voice. “…and that brings us to why we’re here.”Lia straightened slightly, her stomach tightening. “What do you mean? What deal did Tyler take?” She leaned in without realizing it, completely captured by the seriousness in Laura’s tone.Laura’s eyes drifted to her hands as she folded them together. “While I was in the hospital, the medical bills kept going up,
Stacey was already fast asleep on the sofa when Lia quietly entered the house. The lights were off except for the warm glow of the hallway lamp. Lia tip-toed upstairs, wanting nothing more than to collapse into bed.But the moment she pushed her bedroom door open, the lights flicked on.“Who is he?”Lia nearly jumped out of her skin.Trudy stood in the middle of the room with her arms crossed, looking like a furious mother catching her daughter sneaking in after curfew.“Fuck! You scared me!” Lia exhaled sharply, clutching her chest.“I tried calling you,” Trudy said, eyes narrowed. “Only to find out you were out with some guy you haven’t told me about.”“My battery died! And Damien is just a friend,” Lia defended, dropping her bag.“Ohhh, Damien Salvator,” Ava chimed in through the phone. They had her on video call, and she and Trudy had clearly seen everything through the window.“The name suits him. My man is hot,” Ava added with a dramatic smirk.“Oh my God...Ava, not you too,” Li
Lia sat hunched over her laptop, the glow of the screen reflecting in her tired eyes. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard, stuck on the same sentence she’d rewritten at least a dozen times. She was supposed to be working on her scholarship essay, but her thoughts were miles away.“Girl, you have been rewriting that single sentence for the past ten minutes,” Trudy said from across the room, snapping Lia out of her daze. She had been lounging on the bed but now peered over with raised brows. Ever since Asher told her about Adrian, Lia hadn't been able to focus on anything. Her mind kept circling the same terrifying possibility.“Sorry… I just need a break,” Lia muttered, grabbing the glass beside her and gulping down the water as if it could wash away her anxiety.Trudy sat up a little straighter, concern settling on her face. “Something is obviously bothering you. Do you want to talk about it?”“It’s just…” Lia hesitated, twisting her fingers together. “I don’t know what to do.”“Wha
The next morning, the moment Lia stepped into school, she didn’t hesitate, not even for a breath. She spotted Tyler at his locker and marched straight toward him, anger burning in every step. Before he even noticed her approach, she shoved his locker door shut with a loud metallic bang.“Stalking my mum! You really got some balls, Tyler,” she snapped, her voice sharp and shaking with fury.“What!?” Tyler jerked back, startled by both the sound and her tone.“Don’t look at me like you don’t know what I’m talking about,” Lia hissed, taking a step closer.Tyler blinked, confusion clear on his face. “I honestly don’t know what you’re talking about.”“You’ve been sending her messages,” Lia whispered harshly, mindful of people walking by. “Trying to convince her not to marry Adrian.”“I swear, you’ve got the wrong person.” Tyler held his hands up slightly, baffled. “Stalking your mum? That’s a bit extreme, don’t you think?”“You should know,” Lia shot back bitterly.“Look, Lia…” Tyler softe
