On the day of my funeral, Larkton was hit by a torrential downpour. The rescue team brought over my only belonging, a small notebook swollen from the water. It was my diary.Dad limped his way to my grave, stumbling with every step.Jewel had rushed back from out of town, looking like a mess.Mom sat helplessly in the wet mud, clutching my diary to her chest. With shaking hands, Dad opened the first page. There was an entry from when I was eight years old.I wrote, "Jewel broke a vase today. Mom was really angry. I told Mom I broke it, and she whipped me three times with a belt. "Jewel got scared and cried. She said she would never break anything again. That's good. Now she'll remember. It doesn't hurt."The next entry was from when I was ten years old.I wrote, "Today, Jewel went swimming in the river without telling Mom. Mom held my head under the water. It was so cold. There was sand in my nose too."But I saw Jewel sobbing on the bank. She won't go near the river again.
In his first month working at the old brick factory outside of town, falling bricks crushed Dad's leg.The doctors saved his life, but he was left with a permanent limp. When he couldn't afford the rest of his medical bills, he was forced to leave the hospital. He could only limp back to the rundown shack at the edge of town.Every night, the neighbors could hear him sobbing inside the shack.Whenever someone passed by, they could hear him talking to himself. "Allie, I know I was wrong. I should've pulled you onto that evacuation vehicle that day."But no one would ever answer him again. As for Jewel, she finally paid the price of her actions.Since I had always taken the fall for her mistakes, she never learned to follow rules or take responsibility for what she did. After moving away, she got into a fight at a bar and cracked someone over the head. The other person demanded 50,000 dollars in compensation. If she couldn't pay up, they threatened to press charges and have her
Jewel pulled her suitcase straight out of the door. Dad hurried after her and stopped her at the end of the alley. Then, he pulled a wad of crumpled bills from his pocket and tried to force them into her hand."Jewel, be good. Please, come home with me!" he said.Dad's eyes were red-rimmed, and his voice trembled. "Alice is gone. I can't lose you too. I know you're hurting, but so am I!"I wanted to save Alice too, but you know what your mom's temper is like."Jewel looked down at the money. Then she looked up and knocked it out of his hand."Who are you putting on an act for?" She sneered, staring at him."When Mom held Alice's head under the water, what were you doing?" she asked. "When Mom forced Alice to eat uncooked pasta until her mouth was bleeding, what were you up to?"That day, even Goldie had a seat on the evacuation vehicle, while Alice had to stand out in the storm. What did you do then?"Dad went deathly pale. His lips trembled as he responded, "I… I did say som
At the police station, Mom was being held by two police officers. She struggled against them, screaming, "I wasn't trying to hurt her! That's just how we've always done things in Larkton!"Don't you understand? I was punishing one daughter to teach the other a lesson! I never meant for her to die!The investigating officer, Larry Burke, slammed his hand on the table."You call this discipline? What kind of mother does that?" he shouted. "That was a Category 5 hurricane! You left her alone in a danger zone, then refused to sign the consent form at the hospital."That's not discipline. You sent your daughter to her death!"People gathered around were pointing and whispering as insults filled the air.Mom's face turned bright red as she kept shouting, "I'm her mother! How could I ever hurt her?"Just then, a young officer rushed over with a phone sealed in an evidence bag. "Chief, we've recovered the victim's phone data. There's an unsent note on it."The room fell silent.Larry
Mom was still holding the soggy apology that Jewel had written. She stared blankly for a moment, then suddenly laughed. "Doctor, are you and Alice trying to fool me? She has always been good at pretending."She started toward the ER, yelling, "Alice Skinner, get up! Stop pretending you're dead. If you don't get up now, you're not getting any of those new dresses!"The ER was silent. No one answered.A nurse pushed out a gurney with a white sheet over it. Mom rushed over and pulled off the sheet.I lay still on the gurney. My face was deathly pale, and my lips were blue. Cold water was still dripping from my hair.Mom raised a trembling finger and held it beneath my nose. There was no breath, not even the slightest.Mom jerked her hand back as if she had been burned. "Allie?"She shook my shoulder, and my head fell to the side, lifeless."Alice, don't play this joke on me!" she said. The sound of hurried footsteps came from the end of the hall. Two police officers in raincoats
The volunteers pulled me onto a rescue boat. After three rounds of CPR, I finally coughed up water and had a faint heartbeat. When we got to the hospital in the city, the ER doctor took one look at me before his expression turned grim."Patient experienced drowning and prolonged oxygen deprivation. Her lungs are full of fluid! Prepare to intubate and notify the operating room!"Then he shouted into the hallway, "Where's her family? We need a family member to sign!"Footsteps came from down the hall.Mom walked over without a hint of urgency. "Who told you to save her?"Everyone was stunned."She's still alive, isn't she? I bet she's faking it. She's been pretending since she was little," Mom said.A nurse was the first to react. She snapped, "What did you just say? If we'd gotten there 30 seconds later, she would've died! Sign the surgical consent form now. If you delay any longer, no one can save her!"Mom ignored the nurse. She turned to Jewel, who was standing in the corner
