Chapter 1

Logan's Point-of-View

Seeing how upset I was, Piper Ashton softened her tone. "Relax. Long distance won't change anything between us. Branton isn't that far from Kellerton. I'll come visit whenever I can."

She reached for my hand. "Stop sulking. Your parents are waiting for us inside. Let's go eat."

I looked down at her slender fingers laced through mine and thought of the photo in the group chat. Those same hands had been wrapped around Corey's neck while she kissed him like she meant it, like she couldn't get enough.

It made me sick. I pulled my hand free and wiped it on my jeans.

She flinched, but before she could say anything, Corey Hollis opened the front door.

Her face brightened instantly. "Congratulations on getting into Branton Arts, Corey."

He smiled back, seeming almost shy. "Thanks, Piper."

Their eyes met, and they both went red, probably remembering the kiss from the night before.

Mom came out carrying dishes and broke the moment. "Our Corey is such a go-getter. I heard the interviewers couldn't stop raving about how talented he is."

She shot me a look. "Unlike someone who just buries his nose in textbooks. After repeating a whole year, all he managed was some no-name school. It's so embarrassing."

Dad chimed in from the chess table without looking up. "When coworkers ask how my kids did, I'm too embarrassed to even bring you up. You all grew up in the same house with the same parents. How'd you turn out so different?"

My older sister, Sabrina Hollis, was the one playing against him. She let out a little laugh. "Every family's got a star and a dud."

The whole room laughed, Piper included.

My eyes stung. They used to call me slow. They used to say I'd never measure up to Corey. Piper always took my side back then. She always built me back up.

I didn't know when that had changed and when she'd quietly become one of them.

Her betrayal cut the deepest because I'd actually believed she was different. It was like being parched for years and finally getting a drink, only to watch it slip through my fingers. Losing something I'd actually held hurt worse than never having it at all.

I swallowed the bitterness and sat down without a word. One look at the table and my chest tightened all over again.

The table was loaded with maple-glazed ham, candied sweet potatoes, and peach cobbler. Every dish was Corey's favorite. Nobody remembered that I hated sweet food.

I should have been used to it by now. I was the middle child, with an overachieving older sister and a talented, good-looking younger brother. For as long as I could remember, I was the one who got overlooked.

I pushed my food around my plate and watched them laugh and talk. Sabrina was already in grad school in Branton. Now Piper was following Corey there.

My parents were thrilled, going on about how wonderful it would be to have three kids in the same city, all looking out for each other. Nobody asked whether I'd be lonely in Kellerton by myself. Nobody even knew what I'd scored on the exam.

I left the table early and sat on the couch with the television on. Still, nobody noticed.

When they finally finished eating, a dish rag landed in my lap. "We're taking Corey to see a show. Stay here and do the dishes."

Mom said it like it wasn't even a question.

Corey blinked. "Maybe we could wait for Logan to finish? That way, he could come with us."

"You're too sweet for your own good." Sabrina ruffled his hair.

"He wouldn't even get it. What's the point of bringing him?"

Dad waved Piper over. "Piper, why don't you come along too? We can chat about that investment deal your father mentioned."

Piper hesitated for half a second. Then, Corey flashed her a smile, and that was all it took. She glanced at me once, then walked out with the rest of them.

The front door closed. Their footsteps faded down the hall, and I was left alone with dirty dishes and silence.

It barely registered. It wasn't the first time I'd been left behind.

When I was nine, Dad drove Sabrina to her math competition class, and Mom took Corey to his piano lesson one weekend. They left me locked on the balcony. It was July and well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

I screamed until my voice gave out and passed out from heatstroke. When I came to, nobody apologized or even checked on me. They blamed me instead, and said I was stupid for not thinking to yell for the neighbors.

That kind of thing never stopped, not once in 18 years.

I used to think it was because I wasn't good enough, that if I just tried harder they'd finally see me. Eventually I understood that they didn't care whether I was good enough or not. They just didn't love me.

I took a deep breath. I didn't touch the dishes. Instead, I pulled out my phone and called my guidance counselor, Taylor Kensington.

"Mr. Kensington, is the spot for that study abroad scholarship still open? I changed my mind. I want to go."

He was ecstatic. "Logan! You finally came around!"

After I hung up, I found the globe on my desk and traced my finger to the country I was about to leave for.

I'd made up my mind. If nobody here cared about me, I'd go somewhere even farther than Kellerton.

If they didn't love me, then I'd stop loving them too.

It had been a year or two since I'd last seen Piper. She'd lost a lot of weight, and the bright, confident energy she used to carry had given way to something tired and worn.I gave her a polite nod. "It's been a while."She opened the car door. "Where are you headed? I'll drive you."I was about to turn her down when a clear voice cut in from behind me. "He already has a ride. No need to trouble yourself."Scarlett slipped my bag off my shoulder, then tilted her chin toward a car parked further down the street. "Let's go. If we don't leave now, we'll miss the flight."I didn't linger. I got in the car with Scarlett, and we pulled away. In the rearview mirror, I caught one last glimpse of Piper, still standing where we'd left her, watching me go. I looked away and didn't turn around.I never saw her again after that.…The next time I heard anything about Piper, it was three years later. Heather Colson, a high school classmate, came to Astralis on a business trip and took me ou

I went back in the end. I wanted to close that chapter with my own hands.By the time I reached the hospital, Dad was in the ICU. Four years had stripped him down to almost nothing. He was skeletal under the blankets. An oxygen mask covered most of his face, and he was too weak to speak. When he saw me, his clouded eyes flickered with something like light. He tried to lift his hand, but his fingers trembled for a long time and never made it off the bed.Mom was sitting by his side. The second she saw me, the tears started. "Logan, you're finally home."She grabbed onto me and started telling me, through sobs, what had happened while I was gone. Corey had been released from the psychiatric facility and had been living at home ever since. He refused to accept what had happened and spent years trying to retake his exams, but he never got into another school.Over time, his personality grew more and more volatile, until eventually he stopped leaving the house altogether. The family

Piper came inside anyway. "Logan."She stopped in front of me. Her eyes drifted to Scarlett's hand still resting on my shoulder. Something in her expression dimmed."I'm sorry. Once again, I wasn't there for you."I wiped my eyes and met hers. "It doesn't matter."She looked taken aback, and I held her gaze evenly. "I don't need anyone by my side anymore. From now on, I'll take care of myself."The light in Piper's eyes faded, little by little. After a long silence, she asked quietly, "Are you two together?"I glanced at Scarlett. "That doesn't matter either. Piper, whether or not Scarlett and I are together, I'm never getting back with you."Her face went even paler. "Why? Logan, I know I was wrong. Why won't you give me a chance to start over?"I let out a soft laugh. "You still don't get it, do you? I already gave you plenty of chances."The first time I found out she'd kissed Corey, I waited for her explanation. However, she brushed it off like it was nothing. When my par

I was on my feet before I even realized it. "Scarlett, let's go. I don't want to eat here anymore."I barely made it two steps before Mom caught up. "Logan! Logan, is that you?"Dad and Sabrina were right behind her, cutting off every way out.Mom's eyes were bloodshot as she reached for me. "Logan, we've been looking everywhere for you."I stepped back, out of her reach. "Why?"Her hand hung in the air. Dad let out a sigh and, for once, dropped the sense of authority from his voice."We came to apologize. The way we treated you before was wrong."Sabrina kept her head down. "Logan, I know I said some awful things. I'm sorry."Looking at their gentle, contrite faces, I felt nothing but the sheer absurdity of it all. When I didn't respond, Mom jumped in. "Corey's already been punished. The things he did blew up so badly that the school expelled him. He's had a mental breakdown since then, crying and screaming all day. We had to check him into a psychiatric facility."She watch

Scarlett took me to a restaurant near campus. Once the food arrived, she said, "I'm moving out tomorrow."I blinked. "Your mom came to get you? Are you going home?""Nope." She leaned back in her chair with a serious expression."I've been thinking about what you said, and you were right. Why should my dad's money end up in some other woman's pocket?"I've decided to stay, focus on school, and take over the business. Then, I'll bring my mom here, spoil her rotten, and let that cheating bastard watch."I couldn't help but laugh. "Glad you came around."Scarlett always acted as if nothing fazed her, but I knew that staying here and facing the father who'd been absent most of her life wasn't nearly as easy as she made it sound. She narrowed her eyes at me. "I'm about to move out, and that's all you have to say?""What else should I say?""Would it kill you to tell me you'll miss me?"I looked down and kept eating. "Why would I miss you?""Cold." She stared at me for a few secon

I pried Piper's fingers off one by one. "Did you forget? You're the one who gave up on me first. You and the people I used to call family left me behind together."Piper scrambled to her feet. "Logan, I never wanted to give up on you. I just misunderstood. I didn't know they would do that to you."Her eyes were red, and her voice was getting hoarser by the second. "I've always loved you. My whole life, you're the only person I've ever loved."I cut her off. "Stop talking about love. You don't get to use that word."Whatever she called love was worth nothing."I'm going to be late." I shifted the books under my arm and walked past her."Stop following me."Piper called after me, "I'm not giving up. Logan, I'm going to prove to you that what I feel is real."I didn't bother responding. I figured if I ignored her long enough, she'd go back home.It wasn't until the next day that I found out what "not giving up" actually meant. That afternoon, I walked into the library with an ar
