Chapter 3

When I opened my eyes once more, I was on a bed in the hospital.

Wesley was sitting next to me, his eyes bloodshot. However, the tenderness in his gaze that he once held for me was gone, replaced with heavy disappointment.

"Rowena stayed up late last night to help me organize the hunting plans for our territory. Nothing is going on between us. Why would you cause such a scene just because you're jealous! You're even faking an illness to gain pity?"

He added, "You should remember that you're still the Luna of the pack! Don't just cause trouble whenever you please."

I was stunned.

My gaze landed on the forged medical report that diagnosed that my blood sugar level was just low. I smiled self-deprecatingly.

Alright, then. I don't need anyone to feel guilty or feel sorry for me. I just want to quietly vanish without causing any trouble.

Before he left, he said warningly, "Tomorrow is the pack's gala. Don't fool around. Don't embarrass me in front of the entire pack."

The next day, Rowena attended the gala with her arms hooked around Wesley's. She accompanied him to greet the other Alphas of other packs, chatting and exchanging jokes. She looked more like the Luna than me.

Many cast me condescending and disdainful gazes.

I was busy dealing with my mother's funeral, so I couldn't be bothered to dress up.

I must look like a mess in their eyes.

"How could a she-wolf like her become a Luna? What on earth was Wesley thinking? If I were him, I would have kicked her out of the pack!"

"Just because she's the Alpha's mate. Do you think they still have any feelings for each other?"

"Just wait and see. Sooner or later, Wesley's going to dump her. Then, he can properly marry Rowena. Now, that's what I call a perfect match."

I heard too many comments of this sort. I smiled numbly.

They weren't wrong. Wesley was soon going to break it off with me. I was soon not going to be their Luna anymore.

Wesley was clearly satisfied with Rowena's performance. He looked at her proudly while sweeping her hair back behind her ear.

Rowena deliberately lifted her wrist, showing off a Luna bracelet encrusted with a large moonstone.

That was the token that Wesley gave to me when we became mates. The only one of a kind in the entire world.

Later, when I started hurting myself, Wesley took the bracelet away as he was afraid I would use it to hurt myself.

I never thought that it would end up with Rowena.

I had to admit it, it looked much better on Rowena.

"Maggie, you should care more about Wesley." Rowena approached me with a glass of wine in her hand. She said with a mocking concern, "Don't try to use those cheap tricks to gain pity. He doesn't like it."

I dug my nails into my palm, forcing myself to stay calm through the pain.

The next moment, Rowena went in closer to my ear and said in a voice only the two of us could hear, "How's your mother? Please send her my regards."

Her face was distorted into a malicious demon.

When I came to my senses, I shrieked and slapped her.

Rowena fell right into Wesley's arms, clutching her face. However, when she looked at me once more, she was smiling victoriously.

"Maggie, how dare you hit her!"

Wesley shoved my hand aside so hard that I fell straight to the ground. The gravel sliced into my palms and knees, a searing pain burning through me.

I wanted to pounce on Rowena to tear away her pretentious facade, but Wesley put her behind him, protecting her cautiously.

Rowena mouthed silently at me, "The pup."

A huge sense of fear instantly overwhelmed me.
