Maria

I had just entered the dimly lit corridor leading to my husband’s chambers in Rossi Towers when I heard his voice.

Donatello Rossi. Low, contemptuous, with a mocking growl that made me stop dead.

He had said my name.

“Maria?” he drawled. “My wife?”

The derision in his voice was unmistakable. A humourless chuckle followed.

“You want to know why I married Maria?”

I stood frozen outside his inner office, the sanctuary from which my husband ruled Chicago’s underworld like a king.

Construction, trucking, restaurants, nightclubs, security firms, real estate, logistics—the Rossi family had its fingers in all of them.

The familiar scent of cigars, expensive liquor, and Donatello’s woodsy, spicy cologne drifted through the doorway.

“She’s a debt my father owed Lorenzo,” Donatello said. “I married her because a Rossi repays his debts.”

My youngest son, Roman, suddenly felt heavier on my shoulder.

“Her father died protecting mine. When my father asked me to marry her, I obeyed. End of story.”

There was a pause, the clink of glass against glass.

His voice was slightly slurred. He had probably had one drink too many.

I stood motionless, the words sinking into me with the slow, numbing force of a blade.

That was all I was to him. A debt repaid.

Three years of marriage, two sons, and not once had I imagined that my husband might see me as anything more than an obligation.

Donatello Rossi. Second son of Vittorio Rossi, the Mafia Godfather, and the man everyone expected to inherit his father’s throne.

My husband.

Twelve years older than me, brooding and devastatingly handsome, he was the man I worshipped in silence.

At night, he claimed my body with a fierce possessiveness that left me breathless. By morning, I was little more than a junior member of his staff, rewarded with a cool glance if I dared to speak.

I was the unloved wife.

His face was all hard angles and beautiful severity. By evening, dark stubble shadowed his square, dimpled chin. His powerful jaw, which I kissed when he held me in his arms, was usually set in a hard line. Tattoos wound down his heavily muscled right arm and across the right side of his back. Heavy black brows framed cold eyes, and his wide, fine-lipped mouth rarely softened. His unruly black hair fell over his forehead, refusing to be tamed.

God, how I worshipped him.

Not that he knew. Or cared.

There was never tenderness in those black eyes when he looked at me. No affection in the way he rolled away after taking me fiercely, leaving me to lie beside him in the darkness.

“Come here,” he would command.

And when he was satisfied, another clipped order.

“Roll over.”

That was Donatello Rossi. The Mafia king. My husband.

And I loved him with all my heart.

Earlier that evening, I had impulsively decided to visit my husband at his city offices.

Donatello had been away from home for two weeks, though I knew he had returned from Sicily three days ago. He hadn’t called me. Of course, he hadn’t.

I had overheard our housekeeper, Carmen—Donatello’s maternal aunt—talking to one of the maids.

“The young Don is in the city.”

I had paused in the doorway, my heart lifting before I could stop it.

He’s back.

Then reality intruded. Donatello rarely called me. His personal assistant, Belinda, was the one who kept me informed of his schedule.

Donatello will be late tonight. He has the gala at the Moretti mansion.

Or:

Donatello has a meeting and won’t be coming home.

Belinda delivered these messages with the smug assurance of a woman who knew more about my husband’s life than his wife did.

The first year of our marriage, Donatello had forgotten our anniversary. I had been seventeen, with little Matteo already in the nursery, and had timidly reminded him over breakfast.

He hadn’t even looked up from his phone.

A grunt was all I got.

That evening, Belinda sent me lilies and a small diamond bracelet.

No note. No message from my husband.

The next morning, I wore the bracelet, hoping he would notice. When he didn’t, I finally pointed it out, my heart hammering with pathetic anticipation.

He glanced at it.

“Hmm.”

As though I had merely commented on the weather.

I had learned to be grateful for crumbs. Now, listening to Carmen’s triumphant chatter in the kitchen, I felt an unfamiliar surge of anger.

Steeling myself, I walked in.

Carmen’s expression settled into its usual mask of indifference, concealing the contempt she never quite managed to hide.

“Is Donatello back?” I asked before I could reconsider.

Her tall, austere figure stiffened. She turned to me with a frosty smile.

“Yes, Donna.”

The title sounded like an insult in her mouth.

“Why do you ask, Donna?” she continued sweetly. “Didn’t he call you?”

I flinched.

Matteo, standing beside me, caught the change in my expression and clung to me. Around us, the three maids exchanged mocking looks.

They never let me forget who I was: the daughter of the Godfather’s Capo, a man who had died saving Vittorio Rossi’s life. My marriage to Donatello might have elevated my position, but in their eyes, I remained an unwanted obligation.

I was only nineteen, having turned a week ago, but I refused to let them see how deeply their taunts stung.

I lifted my chin.

“Actually,” I said, more boldly than I felt, “I was on my way to see him. I thought I’d surprise him.”

Carmen’s eyebrows shot up.

“Donna!” she exclaimed, scandalised.

I turned away before she could say more, summoning what little dignity I possessed. With Roman perched on my shoulder, I swept out of the kitchen, Rosa, my faithful old maid, hurrying after me.

For once, I would not wait at home for my husband to remember I existed.

I would go to him.

  • When the Don Begged   Chapter 9: Lovers or Enemies?

Maria Like every night when he took me, there was a frenzy in his movements, and I surrendered to his superior strength and expertise. To my credit, I did put up a fight and fought him for a time, raking my nails down his muscled back, but that only seemed to arouse him further. His mouth on my nape, he grunted, amusement lining his voice, as he rammed into my wet womb,“Ah…so my little slave can be a hell cat, huh?”My wrists were bound in a silken scarf above my head, and I squirmed as he played with my cl*t.Donatello brought me to the heights, holding back till I begged for mercy, and I cried out in pleasure as he thrust into me forcefully.I was dimly aware of him coming after I had orgasmed more times than I could count, his hot seed spurting into me.Belatedly, I remembered that I had not renewed my prescriptions for the Pill.He rolled off me after unfastening my hands, and we lay in silence, panting, our bodies damp. There was no affectionate moment after that, and I found m

  • When the Don Begged   Chapter 8 Maria

MariaDonatello stared at me, his face hard, blank. But I could sense his disbelief. The furniture had finally begun to talk back, I thought nastily. My heart was pounding, but I refused to let him see it. I had spent too many months learning how to hide fear behind stillness. Tonight I was too tired to roll over and be his f*ck toy.I thought of Belinda Barnes, her hands all over Donatello and sat up straighter. His deep baritone echoed in my head; just a while earlier, Donatello had dismissed me as being a burden, just a debt.It stung. So I raised my head, jutted my chin out, and glared back at him.I knew that he had never seen this side of me. I always played the Submissive, Obedient wife. But tonight, I was too weary. Or angry. Maybe both.No husband, I thought firmly, I have some self-respect left.I did not realise that the sheet had tightened around my chest, framing my full breasts.“You don't get to walk in here whenever you please,” I whispered, warming up to my new avatar

  • When the Don Begged   Chapter 7: The tussle

Donatello walked to the bar. He was not a man who drank much, for he knew how drink could make a man weak. But now, he felt the need for a couple of stiff drinks. The image of Maria lying on the bed, her drab dress outlining her soft curves, was something he could not unsee. And then her lovely oval face: the way a blank expression had come over her features, like a shutter, as she stared at the lipstick on the side table, and the hurt beneath it lingered. Maria’s face, the hurt that was quickly hidden. He clenched his fists, and the tumbler crashed down on the counter.Belinda Barnes was no longer welcome to sleep in the guest room. She had been overstepping boundaries, but he was equally to blame, Donatello thought, in a rare moment of insight, and the thought soured his mood. The Don quaffed down the drink, and his man refilled his tumbler silently. He might not love his wife, but he would not make the mistake his father had. He didn't want his sons to grow up judging him.Belinda

  • When the Don Begged   Chapter 6. Donatello: Reflections

DonatelloIn that unguarded moment, he felt a frisson of guilt that caught him off guard. He knew she was thinking of Belinda, who had come to him and complained, “Donatello, I have been wearing the same gowns over and over again.”Belinda had been at his side at every function for the last three years, ever since Matteo was born. As her Boss, he had obliged her, asking her to get a new gown. It had made perfect sense to him.Now a faint stirring of guilt arose, but he rebuked himself. After all, he had not gone out and bought clothes for his assistant himself; he had given her his card and asked her to get one when she smiled and pouted prettily. He argued with himself; he was not unfaithful. Now, frowning, he thought of how Belinda let her hand linger on his longer than needed…What no one knew was that he hadn't felt the need for another woman in his arms since he had wed Maria. The only woman he wanted to f*ck was his wife, bizarre as it might sound, he thought grimly. But now he

  • When the Don Begged   Maria

MariaAt sixteen, I had become engaged to Donatello Rossi, the son of the man my father had died saving. The Rossi family controlled Chicago, and no one dared challenge their decisions—not even when the bride was a minor. My father, Lorenzo Orsini, had been Vittorio Rossi’s Capo and closest friend. He died during a surprise attack by a rival Mafia family, shielding the old Don when survival seemed impossible.Overnight, my mother and I were left alone. At my father’s funeral, Vittorio held my mother’s hand, his deep-set eyes red-rimmed.“Don't worry, Lucia. We will look after you. Maria will become my son Donatello’s bride.”A promise made in grief became a marriage arranged in duty.At our engagement ceremony, I gazed at Donatello with undisguised wonder. Twelve years older than me, he was already a formidable man, his handsome face dark and unreadable. He barely looked at me as he slipped the ring onto my finger.Later, when we stepped outside, he finally addressed me.“Remember, gi
