Chapter 1

I handled Grandma's funeral arrangements alone, then came home and sat in the living room all night.

That night, I thought everything through.

It was not until the following evening that Scarlett came through the door. She froze for a moment when she saw me in the living room.

"Ron, why aren't you sleeping? Why are you sitting out here?"

My face remained calm, my tone stiff. "Couldn't sleep."

"Don't tell me you can't sleep without me here."

Scarlett sat down beside me, her long, pale legs crossing over and pressing against mine. I noticed the black stockings from yesterday were gone.

She rested her head on my shoulder. "You're a grown man and you can't sleep when your wife's not around? How embarrassing would that sound if anyone found out?"

The moment she opened her mouth, the stench of alcohol mixed with cigarette smoke hit me. It was nauseating.

I frowned and stood up, moving to the other couch.

Scarlett looked taken aback. "Honey, what's wrong with you?"

I let out a cold laugh. "You were gone all day and night. Where were you?"

"Entertaining a client. You know how it is. This client is from out of town and I was exhausted from just rushing over there.

"The black stockings I wore yesterday were of such cheap quality that they tore. You should buy me better ones next time."

Scarlett pulled two gifts from her bag, apparently trying to prove she was not lying.

"These are gifts I got for you and Grandma while I was out of town. I rushed back to the office during the day. You have no idea how busy I've been."

Her meaning was clear. Despite being so busy, she still remembered me and Grandma.

Two gifts. One was a men's watch in a style I recognized immediately. Chase had posted on social media before about wanting one.

The gift meant for Grandma was an ivory pendant.

In all our years of marriage, she had never bought Grandma a single gift. This time felt like it had been prepared in advance.

I glanced at them both, then tossed them directly into the trash.

Scarlett shot to her feet and stamped her foot in anger. "Honey, what's the meaning of this?"

I stared directly into her eyes. "That's Chase Morrison's favorite watch. What happened? He didn't want it?"

"Don't you dare accuse me of anything! This was meant for you."

"We've been married seven years. When have I ever worn a watch?"

My expression turned mocking, my gaze ice cold. "Just tell me the truth. Where were you entertaining clients last night?"

Her expression turned guilty and she started stumbling over her words. "At a restaurant, of course."

"A restaurant or a hotel? You reek of alcohol and are covered in the scent of Chase's cigarettes. Do you think I don’t have a nose?

"And those stockings weren't really torn, were they?"

I rose abruptly, my tone heavy. "Scarlett, let's file for divorce tomorrow morning."

My words struck like a thunderbolt and terrified Scarlett. "Ron, have you lost your mind? You want to divorce me?"

My expression remained blank. "Since you've already given your heart to someone else, divorce would be good for you. You and Chase make a lovely couple. I wish you both all the happiness in the world."

"Ron, how many times do I have to say this? Chase and I are just close friends. Why are you reading so much into this?"

Scarlett seemed to grow bolder and her voice rose considerably.

Unless it's to sign divorce papers, don't come near me. I never want anything to do with you again for the rest of my life."Scarlett froze in place. Watching me leave, she slowly sank to the ground, tears streaming down her face.My vision was blurry, but I could barely make her out. But so what? In the past, I would have rushed back to her without hesitation. Now the damage was done. There was no going back.I hated her, and I hated myself. After my injuries healed, I started working at Jason's company. "So tell us, what are you trying to get out of the Hayes family?"Wait, no."After speaking, Seth leaned closer to me with a provocative look. "First, prove whether this person actually died or if you're making it up."I suppressed the rage burning inside me and looked at Scarlett once more. "Sign the papers."Seth smiled mockingly. "You really think you're something special, don't you?"Scarlett, just sign it already. What kind of stunt is this supposed to be? Who's he trying to scare?"Acting all high and mighty. Who are you trying to impress?"Scarlett could get divorced ten times and still have men lined up around the block. What's there to worry about?"Chase chimed in. "Exactly, Scarlett. You can't let yourself be led around by the nose.""Hey, I think Chase is perfect. Childhood sweethearts. He and Scarlett are a great match."Seth looked at me smugly. The mourning armband seemed to offend his eyes.He ripped it off my arm in annoyance. I tried to grab it back, but th

I slammed the divorce papers I had prepared onto the table."I'm here to divorce Scarlett."The moment those words left my mouth, the entire room fell silent.Everyone looked incredulous. Chase froze for half a second before a trace of amusement appeared in his eyes.Scarlett stood up, disgust evident in her eyes. "Ron, why did you come dressed like that? Don't you know how embarrassing this is?"She looked behind me. "Why are you here alone? Where's Grandma? Put those divorce papers away right now."Before I could respond, James had already walked up to me, his eyes filled with unmistakable fury and contempt."You were the one who wanted to marry Scarlett in the first place. Now you want to talk about divorce at my birthday banquet? Do you think you can disrespect the Hayes family like this?"Ursula scolded me too. "Ron, put those papers away right now. And go change your clothes."Seeing that I did not move an inch, James grew even angrier. "Am I too old now? Do my words mea

Early the next morning, I received a message from an unfamiliar number."My dad's 50th birthday is at noon today. Don't forget."Remember to bring a gift. Something small is fine."My expression was indifferent. I wrapped Grandma's urn in a piece of red cloth, pinned a black armband to my sleeve, and left the old house. When I arrived at the Hayes family gate, I was about to walk in when someone stopped me."You there. The kitchen is swamped. Go help out."It was the Hayes family butler. He looked down on everyone and had made my life hell more times than I could count. The Hayes family was like that. From top to bottom, everyone had this inexplicable air of superiority. In their eyes, the young lady's husband was not even as good as a servant.Combined with the Hayes family's indifference, these people felt entitled to order me around and make me do all the dirty work. Even Scarlett was like that. Before, I loved her, so I could put up with it, but today, I refused outright.

Just as I was struggling with mixed emotions, Scarlett came back into the room carrying a bowl."I learned this hangover cure online. Try it."This scene was all too familiar to me. Except the roles had been reversed. In the past, I was always the one doing these things.Scarlett often had business dinners and came home drunk, while I stayed up making remedies for her hangovers. For seven years, I did it without complaint because I believed that taking care of my wife was a husband's duty.I loved Scarlett too much. I loved her to the point of complete self-abasement, to the point where I stopped being myself. For her, I would have even given my life willingly. However, what was the result?Ha. No matter how much I loved her, I was just a fool.I pushed away the bowl Scarlett was offering me. "There’s no need."Scarlett frowned. She said irritably, "Ron, this is the first time in my life I've ever taken care of someone."I've already bent over backwards for you. What more do

"Fine. I'll bring Grandma to your place to talk."Scarlett's expression finally improved a bit."Tomorrow then. My dad is turning 50. You bring Grandma along and we'll settle this once and for all.""No problem."I slammed the door shut. After Scarlett left, my emotions instantly overwhelmed me.Thinking about everything that had happened these past few days, I wanted nothing more than to get blackout drunk.I pulled out my phone and dialed a number I had not contacted in a long time.Less than half an hour later, Jason Carter and I met at the restaurant we had agreed on. He was my best friend. On the day of my wedding to Scarlett, the Hayes family forbade me from inviting any of my relatives or friends. I had agreed at the time. That same day, after Jason found out, he never reached out to me again. And I felt too ashamed and embarrassed to contact him either.Seven years had passed. I thought he no longer considered me a friend, but the moment I called, he came without a se
