Chapter 3

Author: Pig Bun
It was the morning of the third day when I woke up.

My phone was on the nightstand. I dragged it over and unlocked it. I'd been out for twenty-four hours, and there was nothing but app notifications. No missed calls from Victoria. No messages. Our chat still ended on that transfer, sitting there like a joke nobody had to say out loud.

I opened her feed.

She'd posted nine photos ten minutes earlier. She was still at Julian's apartment. Warm yellow light, colored beads all over the floor, Victoria sitting on the rug with a pair of tweezers, her face in profile and softer than I'd seen it in years.

The caption read: Someone's a perfectionist and refused to sleep until it was done. Support crew reporting for duty.

Underneath it, a wall of likes and comments from friends they shared.

"God, get a room."

"Since when is Victoria this patient with anybody?"

"Julian's got her domesticated."

"When's the wedding, you two?"

"This is what love's supposed to look like."

Julian said once that bead art looked fun. Victoria remembered. She bought every tool for it and gave him night after night.

Julian said at midnight that he felt like a drink, and she'd drive across the city to sit with him.

Julian ran a fever, and she put down a contract worth nine figures to stay by his bed until morning.

Scrolling back through her feed was like reading someone's love diary.

The cruel part was that the diary used to be mine. At twenty, Victoria would have set the world on fire for a nineteen-year-old me.

I kept going, one photo at a time. Somewhere in there, without any announcement, her wedding ring stopped appearing on her hand.

I couldn't look anymore. I put the phone down and lay there with nothing in my head.

The medication was wearing off. My throat was dry. I wanted water, and I couldn't get out of bed to reach it.

Victoria called just as the next wave crested and broke.

"Dinner at the house tonight." Cold. Certain. The way she always sounded now.

I waited a moment before I answered. "I'm not feeling well."

She gave a short laugh. "Last time it was your leg. What is it this time? How much do you need?"

I didn't say anything.

"Daniel, if your legs still work, get over here. Don't forget where you stand in this family."

She hung up.

For some reason that made me want to laugh. I should have taken the amputation.

When I pushed myself up off the bed, I saw the dark red stain on the sheet. I looked at it for a few seconds. Then I doubled my dose, changed my clothes, and went.

The Sterling house was full of noise, the way it always was. Julian sat beside Eleanor in a good suit, in the chair at the head of the table that belonged to the man of the house. He was feeding her orange segments and had her laughing.

Victoria sat off to the side in an armchair, looking at her phone.

When I came in, the room went quiet for a beat.

A member of the staff pulled out a chair for me at the very end of the long table, as far from the head as the room allowed. I sat down.

The women went back to jewelry and handbags. The men went back to stocks and cars and watches. Nobody spoke to me.

It didn't take long before the deep ache started up in my thigh again. I was sweating through my collar when Eleanor finally seemed to remember there was someone down at the other end of her table.

She frowned.

"Daniel. You've been married to Victoria for three years. You've never once been of use to her career, you don't hold a respectable job of your own, and all you know how to do is put out your hand.

"The Sterlings don't keep freeloaders."

  • When the Love Finally Fades   Chapter 9

After another five years, Victoria Sterling was forty. She collapsed in the middle of a negotiation. The results came back as advanced bone cancer. The doctor looked at the chart, then at the woman in front of him — gray coming in at her temples, nothing living in her eyes — and let out a breath.Maybe some things are simply decided."I know there's nothing to be done." Victoria was perfectly calm. There was even something like relief at the back of it. "The same disease as my husband. And his father."The doctor nodded."Good." She smiled, and for once there was real warmth somewhere in it. "Now I finally get to know how much it hurt."She refused aggressive treatment and took palliative care only. She handed the company over, and put the greater part of what she owned into the foundation, so it would go on paying for people who couldn't pay for themselves. For herself she did nothing at all.Death wasn't an ending, the way she saw it.It was where she'd see him.At home s

They arrested Julian. He ran before the trial, but he was never remotely a match for Victoria, and they had him back within days. It added two years to his sentence. It was only when the cuffs went on that it seemed to reach him. The good years were over. What was waiting for him now had no bottom to it.Five years later.Victoria was thirty-five. She'd gotten colder in business and better at it, and she'd cut her parents off completely by then. She lived alone in the house where her brief, miserable marriage had happened. Nothing in it had been moved. A book Daniel never finished still lay face-down where he'd left it on the couch. She never remarried. There was no man anywhere near her, and there never would be. People in their circle knew there was a name you didn't say lightly around Victoria Sterling — a husband who died young, the one thing she'd never talk about.Only a handful of people knew what it really was. Not a tragic romance. A nightmare she was never going to get

Victoria woke in a hospital bed with an IV still taped to the back of her hand. The instant it all came back, she sat up and tore the needle out."Where is he? Where's Daniel?"Her eyes were red raw and she was shouting.Grace came in with the attorney. Neither of them could hold her gaze."Mr. Bennett is in the hospital morgue," Grace said quietly. "The police are calling it a suicide. There's next-of-kin paperwork that has to be signed—""I'm his wife. I'll sign it. I'm taking him home." She was already trying to get her legs over the side of the bed.The attorney set a folder in front of her. "Ms. Sterling. There are things you need to see first."It was what she'd ordered Grace to pull before she got in the car.Her hands shook as she opened it. Investigation summaries. Photographs. Bank records. Copies of medical files. In black and white, and there was no arguing with any of it.How Julian had intercepted messages. How he'd manufactured the evidence that made Daniel a

Victoria stared at the line on her screen."I've been diagnosed with bone cancer. Same as my dad."Her ears were ringing. And then she remembered that day exactly. She'd been at Julian's apartment. He'd had her phone in his hand, laughing."Daniel's asking you for money again. Let me send him something back, he'll love that."And then — nothing. There was no and then. She'd never even read what he wrote. Was it possible he really had it? Julian had checked. Julian had checked, and her parents had told her for years that this man was a professional, that he worked his way through rich women for a living. She hadn't believed it at first either. But what were the odds — married one day, and the next his father's in a hospital bed needing an enormous sum for surgery? Her head was splitting. She didn't know who to believe anymore. What she did know was that she couldn't lose Daniel. Her fingers shook as she scrolled up. Transfer after transfer after transfer, a solid column of them

I couldn't face that house, so I went back to my father's old place. My phone buzzed. Victoria had sent me actual words — the first in three years.Come back and apologize to Julian.I looked at it a long time. It almost made me laugh. Then the call came through, and she was already impatient. "Did you hear me? Julian says—""Victoria." I cut in. My voice came out very quiet. "If I died, would you be sad?"The question that had been sitting on my chest for months, finally out loud.A few seconds of silence on her end. Then her voice went straight up."What is wrong with you lately? Who's been coaching you to say this morbid garbage? Are you a man or not? If you need money, name a number. I've never once said no."Get over here. Now."In the end, she never gave me an answer. It didn't matter anymore. The call ended. I lay down on the plank bed my father and I used to crowd into when I was small, and took an old phone out of a rusted tin.Everything Victoria and I said to ea

  • When the Love Finally Fades   Chapter 4

Whatever color was left in my face went out of it.Three years ago Julian put his car into a guardrail with Victoria in the passenger seat. I threw myself over her, and a length of glass went straight through my knee. She took Julian to the hospital. He was only unconscious. She left me there.By the time anyone got to me it was too late for the joint to heal properly. Every time the weather turns wet it breaks down again and the pain goes into the bone. Six months in recovery cost me my job.Victoria never believed I'd been hurt at all, because she never came to see me. Not once.Later, when I told her — happy about it, actually happy — that I'd found steady work again and could finally carry some of the weight at home, she couldn't even look at me without sneering. Then came the night the old injury flared so badly I couldn't lie still. I called her over and over. I sent everything I had. What came back was one transfer after another. And a voice note from Julian."Sorry abou
