Chapter 1

"Nancy's got Argentosis, with just a year to live. She got sick saving my life, and I can't let her die holding onto regrets. She just wants to leave behind a pup—her own child—her final wish."

Zack Carter had said those lines more times than I could count.

I am Maggie Blake, his supposed Luna. Every time, he acted like it was his righteous duty, as if my refusal made me heartless. Still, could having a child really settle a debt?

I said no, yet he would not drop the matter. He would hound me day in and day out.

What started as sweet-talking had turned into full-blown fights.

Our love was hanging by a thread.

"We're supposed to bond next month, and you want to have a kid with someone else? What am I supposed to be?"

The fights were draining me.

I looked at the Alpha I had loved for five years with nothing but disappointment in my eyes.

Zack was the hotshot Alpha pharmacist at Central City Medical College, the youngest they had ever seen. We had pored over hundreds of herbs together, and he had even promised to bond with me under the watchful eye of the Moon Goddess.

Here he was, backing out and granting another Omega's plea right before our Bonding Ceremony. I could not hide the hurt. Tears streamed down my face, and the wolf within me wailed with grief.

The agony was intense, a bitter gift from the man I loved.

Zack fell silent, his stern features slowly softening. In a hushed tone, he said, "It's just this once. You're still the one I love the most, the only one meant to be my Luna.

"Maggie, I can't turn down her final request.

"You love me, so you'll bend, won't you?"

Despair washed over me like briny waves, overwhelming and suffocating.

Did Zack really think my love meant I had to accept his betrayal?

I fought to steady my shaking frame, but it was no use.

That was when it hit me. Zack had made up his mind to have a child with Nancy, and my feelings did not count for much.

My anguish threw Zack off balance, and he wrapped his arms around me, concern etched on his face.

He was about to say more when a shrill ring cut him off.

Nancy's call. He shot me a hesitant look, then brushed a quick kiss on my cheek. "Sweetheart, I need to grab this call. Nancy's condition..." He did not finish, rushing off to the balcony. I stared after him, a bitter laugh escaping me.

10 years since college, and that was where we ended up.

For a decade, I have been his shadow, loving him from a distance without ever stepping over the line.

I believed he would trust me.

Alas, Zack's phone was a no-go zone for me.

There was a time when Zack was doubled over in bed with a stomach ache, not sleeping off the pain until late into the night.

I tried to mute his constantly buzzing phone to keep the noise from waking him, but I ended up getting a harsh kick from a groggy Zack.

He glared at me, annoyance written all over his face.

"Maggie, dear, who gave you the right to touch my phone?"

His voice had never been so sharp with me in all our five years.

I spent that night curled up on the hard, cold floor, nursing my hurt.

After that, I swore off ever touching his phone again.

However, today, I felt compelled to break that rule.

I got up, aiming for the balcony, but collided with Zack on his way out.

"What are you up to?" Zack's wary look sent a chill down my spine.

Luckily, he let it slide and said with a grin.

"I'll be out to sort out some details for the Bonding Ceremony. Just hang tight at home."

I watched him leave, a knot of anxiety tightening in my chest.

It did not take long to figure out why I was so uneasy.

Nancy had sent me a text.

At first glance, my heart sank, and a wave of pain washed over me.

I blinked, puzzled. As I kept reading, it all became clear.Zack had been searching for me and stumbled upon the truth, leading him to confront Nancy.Nancy, backed by her band of rogue wolves, clashed with Zack. "Nancy, what are you doing?"Irene shoved Nancy aside. However, Nancy just smirked. "Come out, come out, wherever you are."She clapped her hands mockingly.A menacing figure, a rogue wolf, stepped out from the shadows behind the door.Zack's eyes went wide. "You!""Zack, how dare you destroy what's mine?"Nancy's taunting eyes bore into the ragged Alpha before her."That baby isn't even yours!"Zack was too drained to utter another word.He glared at Nancy, his eyes burning with helpless anger. It all made sense then. After a single night with Nancy, she claimed to be pregnant! The rogue wolf laughed as he approached, delivering a brutal kick to Zack's side."Worthless!"I could've ended you before, and I can do it again!"He pinned Zack's head under his boot, grinding it down."Crushing an Alpha beneath my feet feels fantastic!"However, Zack's thoughts were elsewhere, on Maggie alone. For five years, Maggie had shielded him from every slight. She even sacrificed he

"No, it was me!" Nancy's voice trembled with urgency. "Zack, how could you doubt me? I..."She inched closer to him. However, he recoiled from her touch, his face twisted with revulsion."Nancy, I've uncovered the truth."Zack's eyes were bloodshot. "Maggie saved me, not you."He cast a disdainful glance at Nancy from above. "Get rid of the baby."In that instant, Nancy's world shattered."No, that can't happen! It just can't! I—"She was cut off mid-sentence by the shrill ring of Zack's phone.Hope flickered in Zack's eyes as he snatched up the device, but it was quickly extinguished."What's going on?"The voice on the other end was frantic. "Zack, when are you coming back?"Ms. Blake is gone, and our experiment's been on hold too long. If we wait any longer, we'll be broke!"Zack's posture slumped."So the experiment's stuck without Maggie? What have you been up to?"There was a pause before the reply came."The core data of the experiment has always been for your an

Irene was stunned that Zack had forgotten something so significant. She stared down at the Alpha contemptuously, feeling a surge of injustice for Maggie."You've forgotten the major incident from the Winter Festival six years ago, just like that?"I'm genuinely curious. Maggie was injured by a silver mine while getting a blood-stopping herb for you. She was out of commission for a month, and you've forgotten?"It took her hand six months to heal before she could get back to her experiments!"And what about Nancy? What did she do to earn such devotion from you?"Irene laid it all out, every detail from the past years. She even pulled up the photo on her phone, the one of her, wrapped in blood-soaked bandages from that time. The instant Zack saw the photo, he let out a roar of agony. Then, almost immediately, he coughed up blood. In his mind, it had always been Nancy who had saved him on that cold winter night six years ago.How could it have been Maggie? If what Irene said w

Zack was left in a daze after the call ended."Did Maggie just hang up on me?"The male voice he had overheard echoed in his mind."Did she... cheat on me?"The thought spurred him to try calling again, but this time, the call did not go through.A sinking feeling hit him.Had Maggie... blocked his number? She had been mad before, but never like this.Panic mixed with anger as he recalled the countless times he had tried to explain.Nancy was an Omega with a terminal case of Argentosis. She had once saved Zack's life, and then, as she faced her final days, her only wish was to continue her lineage. Zack had agreed to father her child, a simple act of repaying a life-saving favor. However, Maggie just could not grasp it. The anger had subsided, and Zack was seized by a wave of panic. The thought of a life without Maggie was unbearable. He missed her caring nature, but even more, he missed her brilliant mind and her research skills. Without her, what would become of his ex

The pain inside Zack roared to life, a fierce agony that would not be tamed. The nagging suspicion he had been trying to ignore was then painfully clear.Maggie truly had walked away from their bond! Why? She loved him so deeply. How could she just let go?"What was Maggie trying to tell me yesterday?"Zack was plagued with questions. She had been eerily calm, showing no excitement for the Bonding Ceremony, no anger toward him.She was like a lifeless pond. That was when he realized she was already saying her goodbyes.Zack's heart ached, and the wolf within him recoiled in distress. He tried to reach out through their mark, but..."The temporary mark… is it gone?"That thought crushed him completely. His phone was blowing up with calls from family, friends, and Nancy.Even then, he could not bring himself to look. One question haunted him:Why did Maggie cut all ties? She had told the Elders about her decision half a month ago...Wait.
