Chapter 1

Perhaps fate was playing a cruel joke. At the very first business party I attended after returning to Carmont, I ran into Cory Dawson and Alicia Grant—one was my ex, the other the real heiress who took my place.

I calmly watched the two of them. They were dressed in a perfectly tailored evening gown and suit, their arms linked together, looking every bit the perfect couple.

Now and then, a trace of exhaustion would flash through Alicia's eyes. It seemed like her life wasn't as happy as I had thought. Or was it just my imagination?

Alicia's best friends gathered around her, flattering her with smiles.

"The marriage between the Grants and Dawsons is truly the most perfect thing. With a union this powerful and Cory treating you so well, you're truly blessed, Alicia."

"I wonder when you two will have a baby. You should keep the good news going!"

The smile on Alicia's face stiffened. She instinctively tightened her grip around Cory's arm, then put on a sickly sweet smile. "Childbirth is too dangerous. Cory doesn't want to see me suffer, so we've decided not to have kids."

Cory looked at her with deep affection. "Her health has never been great. If something happened to her during childbirth, I wouldn't be able to handle it. The Dawson family has plenty of descendants anyway. If needed, we can just adopt one from the family later."

Alicia's friends looked at her with envy. "Gosh, Alicia. You have a man who's head over heels for you."

A cold laugh escaped me. Maybe I had been imagining things earlier.

How could Alicia possibly be unhappy when Cory loved her so much that he wouldn't even let her risk her life giving birth?

I remembered back when I was with Cory. He had clearly told me he wanted three kids—specifically boys—with me so they could continue the Dawson lineage.

Why didn't he consider then that I might die on the delivery table, too? Of course, I was nothing more than a vicious supporting character in his story, someone unworthy of his attention. Who was I kidding?

The next second, Cory's gaze shifted and somehow met mine across the room. Shock flashed across his face. He instinctively walked toward me. "Abby? You're back."

His voice drew everyone's attention toward me. One person recognized me and started a wave of whispered discussions.

"Hey, isn't that the Grant family's fake heiress? I thought she was dead."

"She caused such a huge scandal back then. I can't believe she has the nerve to come back. Don't tell me she's here to steal Mr. Dawson away."

Alicia's face dropped when she saw me. She exchanged a glance with her friend, then quickly put on a welcoming smile. "Abby, you're finally back. Mom and Dad have really missed you. When will you come home to visit?"

I looked at her pretentious expression and calmly replied, "The last time I checked, I have nothing to do with the Grant family anymore."

Fiona Walker, who had received Alicia's signal, looked at me with disdain. "Look at that cheap dress you're wearing. Life must've been pretty miserable for you these past few years.

"You went through all this trouble to sneak into this party just to win a man back, didn't you? And here you are, acting like you're above it all. How hypocritical."

I lowered my head and glanced at the simple dress I was wearing.

Five years ago, the severe injuries I suffered had left my body in ruins. Not only had my heart been damaged, but my skin had also become extremely sensitive.

The only fabric I could wear without breaking out was pure cotton. Hence, my husband had specially asked a top designer, Lou, to handcraft my clothes. Every piece carried a mark that belonged only to her.

Therefore, I was a little puzzled when Fiona said that. They were supposed to be wealthy young heirs and heiresses. How could they not recognize something designed by Lou?

Before I could say anything, Alicia's eyes reddened with pity. "Abby, I only stole Cory away from you because I loved him too much back then. I can make up for everything else—anything but him.

"I happen to know many outstanding young men in the circle. Why don't I introduce you to a handsome, rich heir?"

Fiona pointed at me, deliberately raising her voice. "Alicia, that's no different than setting those innocent young men up for disaster!"

When I figured it out, Ashton nodded without the slightest hesitation. "Yes, I orchestrated it. They hurt you like that. How could I possibly let them live freely?"He looked at me with heartache. "I still remember what you looked like when I first met you. You were so thin and fragile, it was like a gust of wind could knock you over."After I regained my memory, I took you to see a traditional medicine practitioner for treatment. But I never told you what the practitioner diagnosed."Ashton's eyes reddened. "The damage they caused to you left your body so severely weakened that you lost 20 years of your life expectancy. There's no way to have a full recovery."Knowing that you might leave me years earlier than you should have, I just couldn't forgive them!"Hearing the emotion in his voice, I held his hand with an aching heart. "Meeting you is the single luckiest thing that's ever happened to me. We should just focus on the present and make every day count, Ashton."He buried hi

Ashton nodded. "I'll let the Grants come in first."Outside, the bodyguards let the Grant family enter. I looked at Michael Grant and Eleanor Raine—the couple who raised me—and realized they had aged drastically.Eleanor immediately burst into tears when she saw me. "Abigail, I was tricked by Alicia back then. That's why I thought you were wicked. I still don't understand why I could think that way. I raised you myself. How could I not know what kind of person you are?"Michael's eyes were also rimmed red. He looked at me with overflowing regret. "Abigail, I know you don't want to see us anymore, but I still need to apologize. We never meant for all those things to happen."I took in the regret in their eyes. It didn't seem fake. For a moment, I didn't know what to say. What I could surmise was what had happened to them. Back then, under the control of the storyline, they had lost their sense of reason and sided with Alicia. However, the story had ended five years ago. Little by

My eyes widened in disbelief. I never expected Ashton to say something like that.During that past year, I had indeed fallen in love with him while he had amnesia. However, the man who had regained his memory now belonged to a completely different world. He was the powerful patriarch of the Cooper family, while I was just a poor, struggling single mother. Not to mention, Blaire wasn't his daughter.Growing up in the Grant family, I had been taught that marriage between wealthy families was about matching backgrounds. Even if I were the Grant family's eldest daughter, I still wouldn't be good enough for the Coopers. So, I spilled my guts to Ashton, though he didn't take my concern seriously at all."They're just a bunch of fools. That's why they can't make decisions about their own marriages," he said. "The Cooper family is mine to control now. Trust me. Once you marry me, no one will ever make you suffer."While I was still mulling over it, Ashton had already made the decision. H

Before Maverick could even utter a word, the bodyguards standing behind him covered his mouth.Ashton looked at the exhaustion knotted between my brows and gently scooped me up into his arms. "Everyone, my wife is unwell today. The dinner will be rescheduled until further notice."No one in the hall dared to object. The guests could only watch silently as we left.Back at the five-star hotel, Ashton placed me on the bed and immediately called the accompanying doctor to examine me.After a careful check-up, the doctor said, "After years of recovery, Mrs. Cooper's condition has improved significantly. However, the damage to her internal organs can never be fully healed."She mustn't be overstressed. Her heart cannot withstand such intense emotional fluctuations again."Ashton nodded seriously. He lowered his head and promised me, "This will never happen again, Junia."Although I still had some doubts, a wave of drowsiness washed over my already heavy head. Soon, I could no longer

Ashton held me tightly in his arms, his heart aching for me. He pulled a medicine bottle from his pocket and took out a pill for me. After I swallowed it, the color gradually returned to my face.Still, I was weak and exhausted as I grabbed onto his clothes and anxiously asked, "How's Blaire?"Ashton gently patted my back to comfort me, then pointed to the side, where Blaire was being held and treated by the accompanying doctor. A layer of white ointment covered her swollen, red cheek. Before I knew it, she was back in my arms.I clung onto her, staring at her swollen eyes and pitiful little face. A surge of hatred rose in my chest. She sat obediently in my arms and even tried to comfort me. "Don't be sad, Mommy. I'm not in pain anymore."Seeing how sensible she was, I felt like my heart was being torn apart. My precious Blaire, the child I had cherished with all my heart, had just been mistreated by those monsters. With tears in my eyes, I turned to Ashton. "They did this to Bla

Indignant, Maverick added, "Are all the men in the world dead? Why must you insist on fighting your sister for a man?"I couldn't be bothered to waste another word on them. I picked up Blaire and turned to leave. Deep down, I blamed my husband, Ashton Cooper, even more.If he hadn't insisted on having an online meeting and asked me to meet him at the party, I would never have run into those psychos.I had only taken a few steps when someone grabbed me forcefully. Maverick roughly pulled Blaire out of my arms and handed her to Alicia. Then, he made the decision on his own and declared, "Blaire will be adopted under Alicia's name. Once you return to the Grant family, I'll introduce you to another suitable match. You just need to marry him. No questions asked."Frightened, Blaire burst into tears and reached out for me. "Mommy, I'm scared!"Seeing her tear-streaked little face, I panicked. Without hesitation, I slapped Maverick hard across the face. "I have nothing to do with you o
