It had been a week since school started, and everything was going smoothly—especially with Danny and Athan by my side. But some misunderstandings were just too hard to shake off, like how the girls hated me almost instantly for being close to them. And the fact that I excelled in my studies didn’t help either.

Sometimes, they would say mean things to me, but I knew they wouldn’t hurt me because they couldn’t. If they did, the boys would hunt them down, and I definitely couldn’t stop them. Still, I did my best to understand them. I mean, no harm, no foul, right? Only losers get mad at meaningless words.

Oh, and I finally learned the name of their other friend—the one who everyone said was the hottest guy here. His name is Nathaniel Stevens, but people call him Nathan. I also found out that while they’re friends, they’re not as close as Danny and Athan. They said Nathan was a great guy, just cocky and arrogant. And he wasn’t part of our table because he needed to be at the popular table since he was the basketball captain. In short, he’s a jock.

It was lunchtime, and I couldn’t help but glance over at Nathaniel. I now understand why so many girls liked him. He had fair skin, a well-built body, light brown eyes that matched perfectly with his mousy brown hair, and, of course, he was 6'2".

As I watched him, I couldn’t help but smile, and then a nickname popped into my head—Nate.

‘Nate? Geez, what was I thinking? Did I just make up a nickname for him?’ I silently thought, which caused my smile to fade into shock. I loved giving nicknames only to people I cared about.

‘But I wasn’t attracted to him, right? I couldn’t be.’ I thought as I quickly averted my attention back to my meal.

"Rosie, do you have something you're not sharing with us?" Danny asked teasingly.

"Yeah, do we need to beat someone up? More specifically, do we need to beat up Nathan?" Athan asked like he was ready to pounce on him.

What? Pounce on him? What were they talking about?

"Wait, wait, wait, hold up! Beat him up? What did he do? And what are you talking about, Danny? You know I never keep secrets from you guys!" I asked, both surprised and confused.

"Well, you've been staring at Nathan for quite a while now. Do you like him or something?" Danny said, looking intently into my eyes as though he could see right through me.

"Are you guys crazy?! I know he’s handsome, but seriously, you know I don’t have time for that kind of stuff, especially romance. I don’t want to get hurt again. I’m tired of it. I’m not even fully recovered yet." I reassured them, but I was pretty sure they didn’t hear the last part. I didn’t want to be treated like I was made of glass—too fragile to be handled.

After lunch, we had a free period—no class, yay! I headed straight to the aisle between two rows of bookshelves in the library to read. I loved reading, surrounded by the smell of books, rather than sitting in the reading area with chairs.

Time passed in a blur, and I was nearing the end of the book I’d started reading a few days ago. I would have finished it today if it weren’t for someone who made the books fall on top of me from the other side of the bookshelf. I didn’t care whether it was an accident or not—he ruined my peaceful time!

Come on, it was the only time I had to myself. The boys were always with me, and they were in all my classes. So, I only had alone time in the library since they hated the library, just like most students.

"Hey! Could you be more careful?" I whispered-shouted at the culprit, massaging my head. Luckily, there was no lump on top of it.

"Well, who said you could read in an aisle? I’m pretty sure we have a reading area for that," the culprit answered, peeking through the hole in the bookshelf.

I stood up to answer him and saw his face. "Well, there’s no rule saying I can’t be in here, you know. Mr. ...," I started to snap, but then I realised who it was.

"Oh, it’s you, Nate," I said, smiling brightly at him. I had unconsciously called him by the nickname I’d made up.

"Oh, if it isn’t Daniel and Athan’s girl, who’s been staring at me at lunch. And my name is Nathan," he said cockily, leaning against the bookshelf and looking through the hole.

"First of all, I wasn’t staring, and I was looking. There’s a big difference. And Nate is my nickname for you... See, I love making nicknames for my friends, and since you’re friends with the boys, I thought I’d make one for you, too. It's too bad that I can’t always call Athan by the nickname I gave him. He can be scary sometimes, you know." I blurted out while I helped him fix the shelves from my sides to hide my face, which was probably red by now with embarrassment. When we finished, I grabbed my bag from the floor and started to clean up my mess just as he came around to face me.

"So, you were just looking, not staring, huh?" he said with a smirk.

I simply answered him with a "yes" and grabbed my bag, giving it a quick check before looking up at him again.

"I don’t like that nickname, so you’re not calling me that. And don’t fool me. I know you like me—that’s why you gave me a nickname. And don’t act like we’re close or something. I don’t even know your name. That’s why the students are saying you’re a ‘wannabe,’ thinking you’re popular just because you’re close to Athan and Daniel," he said, leaning against one of the shelves. So that’s what they thought of me.

"Oh, too bad. I’m already calling you that. And just so you know, I’m pretty stubborn. Yes, I have a nickname for the boys, and no, I don’t want to be popular. But I can’t help it if I’m always with the two of them. So, could you please stop judging me? I’m not doing anything to you." I said, just as Danny and Athan came into view.

Yes, Tan-tan is my nickname for Athan, but he gets mad whenever I call him that. He rarely gets mad at me.

"Hey, guys, is there a problem here?" Athan asked, putting his arm around my shoulder and glaring at Nathan while Danny stood beside him, looking equally intense.

Oh boy, here we go again—my overprotective brothers, acting like I’m their responsibility.

NATHAN'S POVI jolted awake, my chest heavy with unease. For days now, I had been hearing soft cries, moans, and even agonising screams in the middle of the night. At first, I thought I was imagining it, but it kept happening. The eerie sounds echoed through the house, vanishing the moment I woke up. It felt as if a ghost had taken residence in our home.Sitting on my bed, I ran a hand through my hair, trying to steady my nerves. I listened closely, waiting to hear the sounds again. After a minute of silence, I sighed and decided to go downstairs for some water. It had also been days since she became cold—so cold I could compare her to ice. Rosie. She barely spoke to me, and when she did, it was only to answer my questions in the shortest way possible.Since that day, the incident remained a mystery to our family, but we let it go, just as Athan wished. But Rosie's treatment toward me had changed. Was it so wrong for me to ask her to apologise to my girlfriend for mistreating her? It

"You are such a liar!""You are such a liar!""You are such a liar!"Those words he left me echoed in my mind repeatedly, drowning me in my most feared place. Before I knew it, I was frozen still, and my subconsciousness brought me back to the past where my most feared nightmare lies."Child, you need to tell me the truth! Your father pushed and killed your mother, didn't he?" the scary-looking police officer shouted at me for the hundredth time.I was in the police station after the horrible situation I had witnessed. The police came to our door and found my mother dead in a pool of her own blood while my father stood at the top of the staircase with fifteen-year-old me curled up in the corner of the room. The officer was terrifying. He was six feet tall, with a bulky frame, greasy hair, and glaring eyes. He stood in front of me, both hands pressed on the table between us while I sat there, tense. He would occasionally slam his hands on the tab

"I... what? It's not like that, Olivia. We were never a couple—this was all arranged. Didn't Nathan tell you?" I stuttered as I spoke, trying to reason with her.The last thing I wanted was to cause a scene. Nathan would surely be furious, and I didn't want to ruin the progress we'd made earlier. For once, we were talking without cold glares or harsh tones, and I preferred it that way. But if I said anything against Olivia, knowing full well how much he loved her, it wouldn't end well for me."You are lying bitch!" she screamed, her palm connecting sharply with my cheek. The sting radiated across my skin, but before I could react, she turned toward Nathan, who was making his way back. Relief washed over me at his return—until Olivia’s next move shocked me.With a malicious glint in her eyes and a smirk that sent chills down my spine, she grabbed the glass of water in front of me. Before Nathan could reach us, she flung the water over her

NATHAN'S POVI know what I did was wrong—cruel, even. Especially when I know that she realised her mistake in agreeing to this engagement, and she’s trying to make up for it by being nice. But every time I saw her, I couldn’t help but feel angry.Today, Olivia came with me to school. She attended a different school—one owned by her family—so she occasionally tags along. When we enter the cafeteria, my eyes instinctively search for Rosie. She looked beautiful, and the way she interacted with Daniel and Athan made it obvious how much she loved them. They love her just as much in return. But when I saw Daniel hug her and kiss her cheek, an irrational annoyance crept up inside me. Athan did the same, but he was brief while Daniel’s lingered. Why do I even care? Why am I acting like a jealous boyfriend?I brought my girl here; I have no right to feel this way. I should be focusing on Olivia, not Rosie.“So, babe, i

  • When the Stars Went Dark   Chapter 9: Colliding Stars

After what happened last night, I had no idea how to go downstairs and face Nathan. How could I have just burst out at him like that? Yes, I’m stubborn most of the time and rarely think before I act, but when I set my mind to something, I do it. I promised to be nice to him, yet I ended up shouting at him instead.‘Great. This is just great!’ I could only hope my outburst hadn’t fuelled his feelings for me—particularly his anger. Not wanting him to barge into my room, fuming mad because he had to wake me up again, I got up, grabbed my clothes from the closet, and headed to the bathroom.Dressed in faded jeans with a few rips and a blue SpongeBob shirt, I made my way downstairs to join the Stevens for breakfast.“Good morning!” I greeted everyone with a bright smile, taking my seat at the table. The aroma of bacon and eggs filled the air, instantly lifting my mood. Good food always brightened my mornings.

"Wake up! You're no VIP to be taking this long. We're going to be late for school!"I was jolted awake by the furious voice and loud knocking of—oh, wait—it’s Nathan. He stood at my door, arms crossed, looking at me like I was some kind of inconvenience."What’s the point of knocking if you already opened the door?" I mumbled, my voice thick with sleep as I yawned."Good, you're up. Get ready. My mom told me to tell you that breakfast is ready. And next time, wake yourself up—I’m not your slave," he snapped before walking out of my room.‘Seriously, does he have a mood disorder or something? Should I refer him to my doctor?’ I thought we were past this constant bickering. With a sigh, I got up, fixed my bed, and took a quick shower. I changed into dark blue jeans, paired with a lime-green sweatshirt and sneakers, before heading downstairs. Nathan and his parents were already at the table, eating breakfast. The sight of strawberry pancakes made my stomach growl in anticipation—my absol
