Chapter 3

Hedgebud
As soon as Morgan heard I had left the Lawsons, he followed without hesitation. Everyone else on my team said they would stand by me, too.

"Mr. Lawson, wherever you go, we go."

What Kenneth didn't know was that the Lawson family hadn't held its ground all these years because of some old-money legacy they loved to brag about—it was because of me.

Even so, I was determined to attend his welcome home dinner.

The Lawsons had gone all out, hosting the dinner at Ravine Manor. All the big names were there, and so was I.

The moment I arrived, I spotted a few wealthy heirs I used to hang around with. Smirks played on their lips as soon as they saw me.

"Gregory? You've got some nerve coming here. You got kicked out, and you're still putting on airs. Aren't you embarrassed?"

Another added, "Exactly! Just look at the scale of this event. It's obvious who the real son is. You spent all these years building things for someone else, but now, you've got nothing."

"Why don't you beg me? Maybe I'll offer you a job." One of them sneered. "We happen to need a security guard, and you look decent enough. All you have to do is stand at the door, and you'll get eight thousand dollars a month. How about it?"

My gaze swept over them, and I scoffed. "No wonder your families would rather raise their illegitimate kids than hand the companies over to you."

As soon as my words settled, their faces twisted with rage. They were just about to come at me when Kenneth appeared, so they had no choice but to back off.

"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for taking the time to attend tonight's dinner," Dad began. "We've finally found our long-lost son, Kenneth. And from now on, we'll do everything we can to make it up to him."

Dressed in a tailored suit, Kenneth walked onto the stage.

It had only been a few days, yet he already carried himself with an air of refinement. Still, the look felt forced on him, like he was dressing up as something he wasn't.

When his gaze met mine, he straightened with confidence and announced, "Even though Gregory isn't the Lawsons' biological son, he's spent years working for the company. I'm willing to let him stay on."

Then, he addressed me, "Greg, stop making things difficult for Mom and Dad."

The moment he said that, everyone turned to me, their gazes heavy with mockery and disdain.

The corner of my lips curled into a faint smile. "No need. I'm not short on money."

"Of course, you're not short on money," Kenneth replied. "Unlike me… I had it rough out there, but I never gave up on my education.

"Greg, if possible, I'd like you to stay and work for me."

Just then, my parents approached me. "Greg, we won't hold it against you for moving out. But Kenneth is right. We raised you all these years, and it's time you gave something back."

"It took me ten years to build the Lawson family into what it is today. And you think that's not enough?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

I went on, "Work for Kenneth? I only work for myself. If a boss can't handle me, he shouldn't expect my loyalty. That's something you taught me, Mr. Lawson."

The instant Dad heard that, his expression darkened with anger.

Meanwhile, the Lawson relatives wasted no time piling on. "Look at him! He's so full of himself. Does he think he's still the heir?"

"He's nothing without the Lawsons, and he still has the nerve to run his mouth like that!"

Another said, "Rob, you're too kind. You should've kicked him out long ago. He's been taking Kenneth's place all this time and still isn't grateful!"

All the while, Kenneth looked down at me with smug satisfaction.

I laughed to myself. This idiot couldn't actually believe these people were on his side, could he?

"No need for you to throw me out. I'll leave on my own," I said with a sneer. "But just remember that once I walk out that door, I'll have nothing more to do with the Lawson family."

"Gregory Lawson!" Dad yelled before letting out a heavy sigh. "Don't blame us for being harsh. It's time you learned to rein in that temper."

"Fine. Then make it official. Announce to everyone that Kenneth is now in charge of Lawson Group. I'm done!"

With that, I turned to leave. As I walked out, I sent a message announcing that I had severed all ties with Lawson Group.

The moment I was gone, Kenneth flew into a rage. "Dad, Gregory is being way too petty! He—"

But before he could finish, Robert's phone rang. And it wasn't just his.

Phones began ringing all around the room, one after another.

"What? Matrix Corporation will only work with Gregory? The contract is void?"

Donald never expected that a nobody from the countryside like me would turn the tables and become the most prominent figure in the Lawson family. He hadn't seen it coming. With no better option, he brought Kenneth back from the countryside, hoping to replace me.Unfortunately for Donald, Kenneth was completely incapable of rising to the occasion. So, they resorted to forcing me out instead. He demanded all my shares, and I handed over the company. But in the end, he couldn't hold onto it. Now, the whole scheme was exposed, and the evidence was damning. With that, the Lawsons went straight to the police, and Donald was arrested. Nancy made it clear she would never forgive him.Kenneth, on the other hand, was terrified. He dropped to his knees, begging Nancy for forgiveness. But Robert and Nancy were already heartbroken. Kenneth knew Donald had ulterior motives, yet he still chose to work with him and tried to take over the family's assets. In a fit of anger, Robert and Na

I shrugged and motioned for Kenneth to leave. He flew into a rage, and Robert dragged him out of my office. Even from a distance, I could still hear him cursing until a slap cut him off. I believed that eventually Kenneth would understand what I meant. …Three days later, Robert came back with a share transfer agreement, asking me to return. By then, the Lawson family's assets were all but exhausted, and the people lurking in the shadows were starting to show themselves. Donald Lawson, Robert's younger brother, stormed over the moment he saw me. "What are you doing here? Gregory, this company has nothing to do with you anymore!""Greg's here to acquire it. Our company's finished!" Robert snapped as he shoved Donald aside. Donald was stunned. "Acquire it? He's got nothing! He was kicked out of the family! How could he possibly buy us out?""I might not, but the Shaws do," I said with a sneer. Almost immediately, Kenneth clenched his fists and yelled, "That engagement wa

After returning home, Robert flew into a rage. When I saw him and Kenneth again, two days had already passed. I sat high above in a spotless, sunlit office. Kenneth, on the other hand, fixed me with a grim expression. As soon as they stepped in, Robert shoved him forward. "Didn't you say you had something to tell him? Spit it out then!""I'm sorry, Greg. I lost my head for a moment." Kenneth faced me grudgingly as he spoke. "I-I'm asking you to come back."I let out a snort. "You want me to go back? Well, let me do the math for you. Hiring a CEO at my level would cost you millions of dollars a year, and that's not even including equity."So, tell me. How far are you willing to go? How much of the company are you giving me?"I lifted my head and saw that Kenneth's fists were clenched. It seemed like he remembered what I had said when I left—that the Lawsons' success rested on me, not the family name. Now that I was naming my price, he balked. Yet, he had no choice. "I'll giv

I let out a self-deprecating laugh, then continued, "I figured I was still worth something, but what you never realized is that I've had a rebellious streak since I was a kid. "I don't hand control over to anyone. And neither you nor Kenneth were ever my only option."That finally pushed Victoria over the edge. She hadn't expected me to shut her down so bluntly. I stood up to leave, but Victoria caught my arm from behind. "Can't you give me a chance?""A chance? What kind?" I retorted. "A chance to be with Kenneth, or to use me?"With that, I shook her off and walked away. What was she even playing at?…I wanted nothing to do with Victoria, but she kept showing up. Over the next few days, I kept receiving bouquets and little gifts. After work, she'd be waiting outside, and when I got in the next morning, she'd still be sitting across from me. Eventually, I took a deep breath and asked, "Victoria, what exactly are you trying to do?""Isn't it obvious? I'm trying to win

Bad news kept rippling through the reception room. It wasn't just the Lawsons, either. Even the clients who had come for the event were getting messages one after another. Every partner, bank, and major client the Lawsons had ever signed a contract with sent the same message. They would only work with me. I was the only one they acknowledged. So, wherever I went, they would follow. In an instant, Robert's face turned ashen. He turned toward the direction I'd left, stumbling slightly. "Go after him now! Bring him back!"At that, Kenneth frowned. "Why do we have to let him call the shots? Whatever Gregory can do, I can do too. Why not let me try?""You? Try?" Robert closed his eyes. "Forget it."Everyone rushed off to handle the fallout, and just like that, the welcome home dinner ended abruptly. …I sat in a bar, swirling the wine in my glass as a faint smile tugged at my lips. By now, the Lawsons were probably scrambling to put out fires. When my buddy Edward Hayes came
