Chapter 4

Author: Windie
From her hospital bed, Wendy watched the scene outside through the narrow gap in the door.

Every little detail felt like a red-hot knife plunging into her heart, twisting deeper and deeper.

She couldn't take it anymore.

She grabbed a glass from the bedside table and hurled it toward the door with all her strength.

It struck the doorframe and shattered with a deafening crash.

The noise startled the two people outside.

They both turned toward her room.

Felix pushed the door open and walked in, his expression as impassive as ever.

It was almost as though the gentle man she'd just seen outside had been nothing but a figment of her imagination.

“You're awake. How are you feeling?”

Grace followed him inside, carrying an insulated food container.

There were still tearstains on her cheeks. She looked at Wendy timidly, her expression eager to please.

“Wendy, I'm so glad you're awake. I... I heard you were hurt, so I made you some soup to help you recover.”

Wendy didn't want to see her.

She wanted nothing more than to tell her to get the hell out.

But the moment her eyes fell on the food container, her heart lurched.

“Where... where did you get the chicken?”

Her voice trembled with sudden dread.

Grace looked momentarily confused before answering.

“When I heard you'd been hurt, I wanted to make you some soup. But the market was already closed, so I couldn't buy a fresh chicken. Then I saw this really pretty one in the backyard, so I... I had someone catch it and make soup for you.”

The chicken in the backyard?

The one Wendy had raised for ten years?

The last birthday present her mother had given her before she died?

The pet that had kept her company through countless lonely days and nights?

Rage surged through Wendy, burning away the last of her restraint.

“Grace Jones!”

She forced herself upright, ignoring the searing pain as the wounds on her back pulled open.

Her eyes were as cold as knives.

“Do you have any idea that was my pet chicken?!”

Grace recoiled, her eyes immediately filling with tears.

“I... I didn't know! Wendy, I swear I didn't mean to! I was only trying to do something nice for you!”

“That's enough.”

Felix stepped forward, shielding Grace behind him.

He frowned at Wendy, his tone openly disapproving.

“Wendy, it's just a chicken. Grace meant well. You don't have to appreciate the gesture, but there's no reason to lose your temper like this.”

Just a chicken?

Wendy stared at him.

He hadn't hesitated for a second to defend Grace.

And he'd dismissed the loss of something so precious to her as though it meant nothing.

Her heart felt as though it had been crushed.

She could barely breathe through the pain.

All Felix could see was Grace's kindness and her tears.

He couldn't see Wendy's grief or how much she'd lost.

“Felix Foster!”

Her voice was hoarse, raw with despair.

“That wasn't just some chicken! My mother gave it to me! It was with me for ten years! It meant more to me than either of you ever could!”

Overwhelmed by grief and fury, Wendy snatched up the bowl of steaming soup beside her bed and hurled it straight at Felix.

“Ah!”

Grace, who had been standing behind him, suddenly cried out.

She instinctively stepped forward, putting herself between Felix and the flying bowl.

The scalding soup splashed over her head and body.

“Grace!”

Felix's expression changed instantly.

He caught Grace as she cried out in pain, then turned toward Wendy with a terrifyingly cold glare.

“Wendy! Have you lost your mind?!”

Chaos erupted.

Felix immediately summoned the family's private doctor.

After examining Grace, the doctor turned to Felix with a grave expression.

“Mr. Foster, the burns cover a fairly large area, and they're quite deep. I'm afraid she'll be left with scars.”

“Scars?”

Grace burst into even louder sobs.

“No! I don't want scars! Felix, what am I going to do?”

The doctor considered the situation for a moment.

“If she wants to avoid scarring, the only option right now is a skin graft. But finding suitable, high-quality donor skin on such short notice will be difficult.”

Grace's sobs faltered.

Almost instinctively, she glanced timidly toward Wendy, who lay pale-faced on the hospital bed.

Felix followed her gaze.

He looked at Wendy.

After a moment of silence, he spoke without a trace of emotion.

“Use Wendy's skin.”

Wendy stared at him.

Felix continued calmly.

“You caused Grace's burns, so you should take responsibility. It's only a small patch of skin. It won't make much difference. I know you care about your looks and you're afraid of pain. I'll make it up to you afterward.”

Make it up to her?

A bone-deep chill swept through Wendy.

The sheer absurdity of his words left her trembling with despair.

“Get out! All of you, get the hell out!”

She pointed toward the door, her voice shrill with rage and pain.

“You want to take my skin for her? Over my dead body!”

Felix's brows drew together.

“Wendy, stop being unreasonable.”

“I'm being unreasonable?”

Wendy almost laughed at the absurdity of it, but tears spilled down her cheeks instead.

“Felix Foster, do my feelings mean absolutely nothing to you? My pain? The things I treasure most? Are they all so worthless in your eyes that you can sacrifice them whenever you feel like it?!”

She struggled to get out of bed.

“You won't leave? Fine! Then I will!”

But the moment she moved, Felix seized her wrist in an iron grip.

“Enough.”

His eyes were cold and commanding.

“Doctor, prepare a sedative.”

“Felix Foster! Don't you dare!”

Wendy fought desperately, screaming and struggling, but she couldn't break free of his grip.

Her beautiful eyes, once so full of fire and life, now held nothing but shattered despair and a hatred that ran deep.

When Felix met her gaze, an inexplicable stab of pain shot through his heart.

An unfamiliar sense of panic washed over him.

Almost without thinking, he raised his free hand and gently covered her eyes.

As though hiding them would somehow erase the anguish and hatred that unsettled him so deeply.

His voice dropped, carrying a gentleness even he didn't seem to realize was there.

“Be good. It'll be over soon.”

A cold needle pierced her skin.

The last thing Wendy felt was darkness closing in around her, followed by an endless, suffocating wave of cold and despair.
