Chapter 5

Author: Beans & Mash
And with those words, I turned to leave as I knew the lawyer would soon send the divorce papers to him.

Not bothered by him hounding me, I strode out of the building and got into the car already waiting for me.

On my way to the airport, I could see Steve giving chase in his car, clearly intent on stopping me.

I simply frowned and told the chauffeur to go faster.

Upon my arrival at the airport, I was about to turn off my phone when Steve's messages arrived, one after the other.

Ellen's POVFather was waiting in the dining room when I got home, smiling and nodding. "Well done, Ellen."I nodded and raised my glass at him. "Because you've taught me well, Father. And what is it that you wanted to discuss?"He took a puff of his cigar, his deep voice booming. "Your mother had made me promise her one thing before she died… which is to find you someone who will always be there for you for the rest of your life."I lowered my glass as he continued, "And you've met Carl Gooding before. He's the eldest son of the Goodings, and his father suggested an engagement when we met last month, but I insisted that you're the only one who can make the call."Carl Gooding?A masterfully chiseled visage appeared in my mind right then.Dark curls, the faint wrinkles that creased as he grinned…Nodding, I said, "He's acceptable."Father did a double-take, and then laughed. "You really are quick on your feet."-Just three days later, Carl himself appeared at my office. He

Steve's POVI stood there, watching in shock as the black car slowly disappeared from view, and collapsed on my knees as if all my strength had left me.Ellen… was the heiress of the Jakos family?I frowned.I didn't understand.I remembered the first time I met Ellen, who was cornered by a drunkard in the alley behind a bar, trembling but holding on to her pocket knife.I bailed her out, and she thanked me in her quivering but melodious voice. At that moment, I decided that I would protect her for the rest of my life. When we fought to claim turf on Wall Street and afford a better life for her, we had to stay in leaky basements and eat cheap pizza while traveling to meet clients no matter how bad the weather was.I once asked her, "Is this life too painful?"I was worried, hanging my head and afraid to see the disappointment in her eyes."No! I'm happy with anything as long as I'm with you."I looked up to find myself staring into Ellen's twinkling eyes, and she gave me a

I looked at Steve calmly as if he were just a stranger. "You're the one who gave up on us first. And isn't that what you and Millie want?""No!" Steve paled even as he argued, "Let's stop this, okay? Let's just start over, yeah?"He strode up to reach for my hand, gulping as he cried, "I'll let you be the marketing manager as you always should've been and transfer Millie to some other branch. We will go to work and leave work together like we used to—""Stop!" I shook his hand off, distancing myself while glaring at him icily. "You're really unreasonable. It's totally over between us, so stop bothering me."As Steve's hands dropped limply at his sides, my consigliere arrived, bowing his head respectfully. "Principessa, Don Jakos is waiting for you to come home for dinner. He says there's something to discuss."I nodded and got into my car. Before I told the chauffeur to drive, I turned to see Steve's shocked look. After some thought, I said, "You can probably guess by now—I am t

Millie was wearing a figure-hugging white shirt with a plunging neckline, her stilettos clicking loudly as she walked. She didn't look like an executive here to compete for the tender, but more like a secretary that a CEO kept around instead. And yet, she was leering at me. "You and Steve are divorced. Why are you still following us around? Oh, wait…"Her eyes widened as she continued sarcastically, "Don't tell me you're a janitor here?"I simply smiled coolly and ignored her as I turned to leave."Stop!" Seemingly infuriated by my nonchalant reaction, she rushed up to grab my wrist. "I will marry Steve soon! Don't think you can mess up my plans—you're coming with me!"I struggled, and it upset her even more.As she raised her palm to slap me, however, someone stopped her before I could. It was Steve, catching and shaking off her wrist, his eyes filled with concern and delight to see me again. "Where have you been, Ellen? Don't you know I've been looking for you everywhere? Com

Don't get the wrong idea!]I sneered and blocked him right then.Looking up, I stared at Wall Street, where I'd fought so hard for eight years… but there will be a new boss in town soon.-Landing in Chicago, I got into the car my father sent, and we were soon on the family manor grounds.Rows of olive trees stretched on, but I found the white building at the very end lower tha

  • Which Hand Really Feeds   Chapter 4

On my last day, I said goodbye to all my colleagues. However, I was ready to leave when Millie and two bodyguards stopped me."Hold it," she demanded, not hiding the malice in her eyes. "I suspect that you're stealing company secrets. Hand over your computer to IT—you can only leave after they check it.""I can cooperate, but you're not taking my computer!" I growled. It was eight years' worth of hard work, and I wasn't about to let it fall into the hands of anyone else!"But you have the latest market research data in it, don't you?" Millie smirked.I was flabbergasted.I had sent it to my father as proof of my caliber and to no one else. However, Steve knew my computer's password. And while I was stunned, Millie clapped her hands, and the bodyguards promptly grabbed me.Millie leered at me haughtily with bare-naked malice and scoffed. "In that case, I shall check it myself."I struggled, but the bodyguards held me with a vice-like grip. Some of the colleagues were upset a
