Chapter 1

When the speeding van sent me flying, I was completely dazed. My body was hurled into the air, then slammed hard against the ground.

I could almost hear the sound of my bones snapping and my organs rupturing.

Seconds later, searing pain radiated through every nerve in my body.

The chaos around me flooded my fading consciousness like a roaring tide—the screech of tires, terrified screams, and then, a familiar ringtone cutting through it all.

With the last of my strength, I fumbled my phone out of my pocket, raised it shakily to my ear, and gasped out between ragged breaths, "Blaire... I... I've been in an accident..."

As I felt my life slipping away, a wave of terror crashed over me.

What would happen to Blaire Kennedy if I died?

I bit down hard on my tongue, forcing myself to stay conscious. "Blaire... if I don't make it through this... take care of yourself. Besides the house and the car, I've also been putting away a quiet savings account for you—a few hundred thousand in CDs. The deposit slips are tucked in—"

"Jim, there's no one else here. You don't have to put on this act. I don't have time for your little performance right now."

The ice in her voice sent my heart plunging into freefall.

She enunciated each word with cold precision, "If you really wanted to do right by me, you'd stop stalling and hand over the money for Dustin's treatment."

Blood loss was already darkening my vision, but I still forced the words out, "He's not sick. He just needs the money to feed his—"

"God, you are so selfish, Jim. You won't lend him a cent, and on top of that, you keep slinging mud at him right in front of me!"

Blaire let out a bitter laugh. "I've known him for years. Don't you think I know him better than you do?"

I tasted nothing but bitterness beneath the metallic tang of blood in my mouth.

'Blaire... I've explained this to you so many times. Couldn't you just believe me once?' I thought.

A few passersby rushed over. One of them immediately called 911, while another pressed down hard on my wounds to stem the bleeding.

"Stay with me, man—don't you dare fall asleep. The ambulance is on its way!"

"Shit... I can't stop the bleeding from your thigh..."

The commotion on my end seemed to give Blaire pause. "Wait... you're actually in an accident?"

I opened my mouth, trying to respond, but then I heard her scoff.

"Serves you right. Maybe this is what you get for being such a cheapskate."

Her words drove into my chest like a knife, carving out a hollow space that bled raw and open.

In that moment, I realized my heart hurt even more than my body.

Finally, the darkness closed in. Just before consciousness slipped away entirely, I heard her voice drifting farther and farther into the distance, "You have three days, Jim. If you still won't hand over the money by then, I'm filing for divorce. A cold, selfish man like you doesn't deserve a wife..."

With that one sentence, she shattered years of love and sacrifice into dust. I felt nothing but cold—like I was trapped in a frozen vault.

Ten years we'd known each other. Three years we'd been married. And in the end, I meant less to her than some two-bit liar.

I'd had enough.

'I'm tired of walking this road, Blaire. If you want a divorce, fine. Let's see who ends up regretting it.'

Those were my last thoughts before the darkness swallowed me whole.

My name stayed plastered across the trending charts for three full days.On the evening of the third day, I received a text from Blaire. My phone had long since been blown up by spam calls and hate mail, so she'd sent the message to my mother instead.Blaire: [Mom, please pass this on to Jim. We didn't want things to get this ugly. But he's been completely heartless. After all the years I gave him, he just decided to divorce me out of nowhere and wouldn't even offer me a penny in compensation.]My mother's face went pale with fury. "How does she have the nerve to ask us for money? She cheated on you, smeared your name in public, and now she's trying to ruin your entire future!"Seeing my mother this upset made my chest tighten."Mom, I'll handle this. Please don't get so worked up. You'll make yourself sick."It took a while to calm her down. Then I took her phone and called Blaire."Jim, we're way past the point of playing nice. So I'll make this simple: when is that five mill

It wasn't until Blaire's father suddenly passed away that she seemed to have a wake-up call. She quit the factory job, picked up her old schoolbag, and went back to finish her education. After learning all of this, I finally understood why she'd looked so strange when I first brought up Dustin's name. But back then, to me, Dustin was nothing more than an ex-boyfriend from her past. I didn't think much of him.Until six months ago, when Dustin somehow got back in touch with Blaire. From that moment on, she started changing—slowly at first, then all at once. Or maybe... this version of her was the real one all along.I was lost in thought when my assistant's call jolted me back."Mr. Perry—bad news. A gang of thugs just stormed into the office. They're trashing everything and spreading vicious lies about you!"We called the police right away, but the damage is already done—there's a smear campaign going viral online."My jaw tightened. I opened my email and watched the surveillanc

I don't know what Dustin told Blaire this time. But the very next day, she showed up at my door."Jim, here's my offer: you go to the police and tell them this was all a misunderstanding—that Dustin never hired anyone to hurt you. In exchange, I'll sign the divorce papers and walk away with nothing."Look at my wonderful wife—so willing to sacrifice everything for another man.I sighed quietly and looked away. There's an old saying: you can't save someone who's determined to drown.I'd given her chance after chance, and she'd thrown every single one away.So be it. There was no more room for hesitation."Blaire, first of all—you have no leverage here. If I want you out of my life, it's only a matter of time. Second, stop wasting your breath. I'm not letting him get away with this."I had my assistant pack my things. I was checking out of the hospital. After more than a month of recovery, my doctors cleared me to continue healing at home.My mother, worried I'd be disturbed, t

I looked at Blaire calmly. "Blaire, you're beyond saving."With that, I turned coldly and walked away, not sparing her another glance. My assistant hurried after me.I'd barely settled back into my hospital bed when Blaire burst through the door, her face twisted with indignation. "Jim, you've always had it out for Dustin, but now you're trying to send him to prison?!"I frowned. "I'm trying to send him to prison? Why would I do that?"Blaire didn't hesitate. "Because you're petty and jealous. You've always thought there was something going on between us. And on top of that, you wouldn't even chip in for his treatment—and you have the nerve to ask why."I couldn't help but laugh. "I said you were beyond saving, and you're proving me right.""You!" She trembled with rage. "I must've been blind to ever marry you!"I gave her a patient, almost amused smile."It's not too late to fix that mistake. The divorce papers and a pen are both ready for you."At the mention of divorce, he
