Wes had stayed in the neighboring kingdom for exactly two hours and twenty-three minutes even though the king was overly generous to him, Ava, and Rus, and offered them temporary shelter at the palace.

"My daughter feels indebted to you for not marrying her," the king had laughingly said to him. "Yes, she might have been saddened by the broken engagement but she loves her freedom too much, and that stable boy."

"And you are okay with it?" Wes asked as they walked into the gardens.

"The stable boy?" the king replied quizzically. "I had disapproved of him for a long time but he is a nice young man. He would take better care of my daughter than you ever could."

"I don't doubt that."

They walked away from the square-cut bush with yellow flowers blooming from it and turned toward the palace.
