Thankfully Owen was there to catch me as I stumbled back upon hearing what Detective Clements had just said. I just stared at him, shocked and unable to move. Suddenly my ears were ringing and I felt like I could puke at any moment.

“She’s dead!” Owen asked in disbelief.

“Unfortunately, yes.”

“Do her parents know?” I asked in a whisper, remembering how distraught they had been in the cafeteria.

“Yes,” he answered with a forlorn expression, obviously haunted by that memory. “They were still here when her body was discovered by one of our K-9 units.”

“Where was she found?” I asked, wanting to know how far she was from those restrooms.

“I’m sorry. We cannot divulge that information at this time. Details about the investigation and crime scene are being preserved so that we can hopefully catch whoever is responsible as quickly as possible.”

“There’s no chance this could have been an accident?” I asked him as I looked back up at him, my vision blurred through unshed tears. “You are one hund

  • Whispers of the Heart   Finding a New Normal

Aurora POVOwen held me as I woke up, allowing me to completely fall apart in his arms. That nightmare had felt so real all the way up until the moment I was being stabbed by the man in the mask. As I cried in his arms, I realized that I was never going to be the same. Everything in my life would now be defined by what happened prior to the murder of Alexis Parker and then everything after. Or maybe, just everything in my life, period, since I had turned eighteen and became an adult. It has been a tumultuous ride to say the least.Knowing that sleep was evading both of us, Owen suggested we get up, get dressed and head down to the diner for a big, hearty breakfast. That sounded promising but it also made me think about everything he had planned for us today. I hated to seem ungrateful but I just didn’t see any scenario where doing any of that made sense.“About our plans today…” I started but he hooked my hand in his and shook his head.“Don’t worry.” He said as he leaned over and kis

  • Whispers of the Heart   Mother's Wisdom

“What!?” My mother exclaimed on the other end of the phone, her voice raised excitedly.“There will be a press conference this morning to make it public and I wanted you to know firsthand from me before that happens.”“What in the world happened? Who was it? Where on the grounds? Have they caught the person responsible?”After her rapid fire questioning, I explained everything I knew so far. I also explained the feelings Aurora had all night leading up to it, including how she felt walking up to that bathroom and her interaction with the victim. I expressed my worries that Aurora could be in danger just due to how close she had come to this person without even being aware of it. I also poured my heart out about how I wanted to do everything I could to protect her but I didn’t know where to even start and was feeling so lost. For once, Mom listened. She let me get it all out and she just listened, offering nothing more than a comforting word along the way and encouraging me to get it a

  • Whispers of the Heart   Nightmares

Owen POVI hadn’t been able to sleep most of the night. When we first laid down and I pulled her in my arms, exhaustion took over almost immediately so I fell asleep fairly quickly but staying asleep was out of the question. The first nightmare happened just forty-five minutes into sleep, at least according to my phone. That one had Aurora in another man’s arms, a man that looked too familiar. A man that looked a little too much like Phillip Clark. I woke up hating him more than I already do but was quickly calmed with the reality that it was only a nightmare and that she was here in my arms.I tried to go back to sleep and must have, for whatever a brief amount of time it ended up being. This second nightmare came on suddenly and once I woke from it, I knew sleep would not come again. I had dreamed that I was at a funeral home, in line to pay my respects but I couldn’t see who was in the casket. I was the next one to step up just as soon as the person in front of me moved. As the figu

  • Whispers of the Heart   Moonlit Mirage

“You have to face this,” I told myself as we trudged up the hill, that brick building looming in the distance. Just like the last time I was here, it was a beacon of light clouded by complete darkness around and behind it. Why had I agreed to this? When had I agreed to this? I needed to face this fear but it felt too rushed, too soon.I stopped, just staring at it. My palms were sweaty, the hand Owen was holding feeling cold and clammy in his tight grip of reassurance. Chief Harding and Detective Clements stood in the distance, silently watching me. It was both unnerving and a needed boost to my confidence that I was well protected and with all these men walking beside me, nothing could happen to me.Shadows seemed to dance in the woods, silent beings watching my every move. As I looked back at the others, I don’t think they could see them. They had the general shape of a person but just out of focus and everytime I tried to focus on one specifically, it disappeared with a soft hiss be

  • Whispers of the Heart   Survivor's Guilt

Owen led me out with his arm wrapped firmly around my waist and my hip tucked into his large palm. We made it to the truck and he opened my door before wrapping his arms around me and lifting me up and setting me on the passenger seat like I weigh nothing at all. Then, he held me without saying a word. He buried his head in my neck and just leaned into me, breathing slowly in and out. I clung to him, too with my eyes closed, just letting him have this moment to get himself together so that we could drive home.He didn't look at me as he raised back up and snapped my seat belt into place. He still didn’t spare a glance as he climbed in on his own side and secured his own belt. He was too vulnerable so I just let him be, with me, in the safety of the truck, both lost in our own thoughts. He started the truck and pulled out as I reached across, taking his hand into mine. He squeezed it, a silent exchange that spoke volumes. I glanced at the time as my eyes blurred, the bright display too
